Chapter 460: The First Step to Becoming a Famous Doctor

Once the two patients were settled, it was already late October.

The weather was getting colder, and fewer folks went fishing.

Even Lu Hanchuan was busy these days—foreign ships were hanging around near Changjing Island.

But none of this concerned Ye Xiaoxiao; she was focused on settling the two newcomers.

The young guy with yin-yang imbalance was assigned to Qu Miao.

Ye Xiaoxiao focused on treating the paralyzed patient with acupuncture, trying to help him improve.

She was so wrapped up in her work that she barely noticed Lu Hanchuan’s absence.

Lin Xining was the first to say, "Things seem pretty tense on the island lately. It won’t get dangerous, will it?"

Ye Xiaoxiao finally looked up. "It should be fine."

It was almost the '90s, and the country was growing stronger. Even if things got messy, it wouldn’t be on a large scale.

But Ye Xiaoxiao recalled that it felt like she was in a story where many things differed from reality.

Lin Xining, not knowing everything, was far more nervous than Ye Xiaoxiao.

Qu Miao stayed cool. "Even if a fight breaks out, we won’t lose."

Lin Xining glanced at her naive younger siblings.

If things really blew up, their quiet life would be gone.

"Well, we’re stuck here on the island now. There’s no way to leave anyway."

Lin Xining sat down, like she’d given up.

Ye Xiaoxiao reassured her, "Don’t worry. We haven’t heard any alarming news. No point freaking out."

"Qu Miao, how’s your patient doing?"

The man was very young, certainly no older than thirty, good-looking but with a cold stare that made him seem unapproachable.

On his first day on the island, he clashed with Qu Miao. If Ye Xiaoxiao hadn’t stepped in, the two might have come to blows.

That kind of aggression was out of line in medical practice.

Fortunately, after two days of treatment, he’d chilled out, way less hostile now.

Besides, as a young man, no way he’d let a woman doctor check him out—though Xiaoxiao wouldn’t have minded.

"He’s under control now," Qu Miao replied.

"And Comrade Xu Yang?" Qu Miao asked Xiaoxiao.

"Comrade Xu Yang is elderly and suffered a stroke. Acupuncture will help gradually restore him. I believe he’ll be able to attempt walking by year’s end."

This was Ye Xiaoxiao’s specialty—a relatively routine case. What intrigued her more was the patient with yin-yang imbalance.

Too bad he wouldn’t let a woman doctor near him.

Ye Xiaoxiao suspected he might have developed a fear of women.

Lin Xining couldn't help but comment, "Is this Huang Yuning also a cadre? He's so young but has such a commanding presence."

Qu Miao: "No way he's an actor. I've never seen him in any movies or TV shows before."

Ye Xiaoxiao checked the patient files. While another patient, Mr. Xu Yang, had clear documentation, Huang Yuning's file contained no background information whatsoever.

Ye Xiaoxiao wasn't particularly curious either. Since the patient chose not to disclose, they would simply focus on treatment.

The small sanatorium's facilities were gradually improving. Besides the staff from Rende Pharmacy like Ye Xiaoxiao, there had been several physicians' assistants working here previously.

Now that the weather turned cold, this place became the first to get the stoves going.

After all, its purpose was to care for important individuals with delicate health conditions who required special attention.

The island's cadres all understood that these people were sent by higher-ups and needed to cooperate when required.

The three of them reviewed the patient files again and each provided targeted suggestions.

Ye Xiaoxiao had assumed no new patients would come to the island given the tense situation.

But soon, she got a call from her teacher, saying two more patients were expected to arrive.

"Master, are you serious? Can't they stay in Beijing?"

They'd be much better off there.

Song Guangjing also sighed in resignation, "Xiao Xiao, this time they're not coming for me - they're specifically requesting you by name."

While she was at a loss for words, Ye Xiaoxiao felt more pleased than anything.

Who wouldn't want to become a top professional in their field?

That they were seeking her out meant she had gained recognition.

    "Alright then."

    Ye Xiaoxiao relented.

As long as they could still communicate with the outside world, it shouldn't be a major problem.

    ...

The days flew by, and it was suddenly late December.

    New Year's was coming up.

Ye Xiaoxiao was really looking forward to this New Year's - unilaterally.

Because after this, it would be the 1990s.

She eagerly anticipated the changes the coming decade would bring.

While others might not know, Ye Xiaoxiao was certain - the Shanghai Stock Exchange would soon open in 1990.

That would mark the real money-making opportunity. Her previous property investments were just child's play - real fortunes would be made there.

Though not an economics major, Ye Xiaoxiao had an elder brother who really knew his stuff about stocks and was always going on about how to play the market in her ear.

Xiao Xiao isn't that naive college girl anymore. After spending years in this strange new world, she has gained a wealth of experience. Looking at the economic market with her current perspective, she can discern the right choices—especially with her special edge. Ye Xiaoxiao got more excited the longer she thought about it, she realized she didn't even notice Lu Hanchuan returning home.

    “What's got you grinning, babe?”

Only after Lu Hanchuan spoke did Ye Xiaoxiao look up.

“About time you came home.” It had been nearly four or five days since she last saw him.

“Just plotting my next money move.”

Ye Xiaoxiao stood up and looped her arm through his, beaming brightly.

“My wife's got dollar signs in her eyes.” Born with a silver spoon, Lu Hanchuan genuinely didn't understand where she got so many get-rich-quick schemes.

“You were laughing so happily just now—seems like this one's gonna pay big.”

Without even asking, Lu Hanchuan affirmed Ye Xiaoxiao’s confidence.

Ye Xiaoxiao preened with satisfaction. “Of course!”

Setting aside her money-making plans for now, she asked Lu Hanchuan whether things were really that bad on the island.

Lu Hanchuan: “Don’t worry, they’re just rattling sabers. Nothing major will happen.”

Still, they had to be fully prepared.

Ye Xiaoxiao relaxed. “Well, I’ve been really busy lately anyway—no bandwidth for this drama.”

Lu Hanchuan had to laugh. His wife’s reaction was kinda cute.

At least both of them were occupied now—otherwise, the guilt would eat him alive.

Lu Hanchuan only stayed home for one night before leaving early the next morning.

“Will you be home for New Year’s?”

Lu Hanchuan thought for a moment. “Can’t promise anything.”

“Alright.” Ye Xiaoxiao nodded. “Then I’ll just spend it with Lightning, Fluffy, and Ermo.”

Fortunately, she was swamped—her days were so packed she barely had time to sit around pining.

After Lu Hanchuan left, Ye Xiaoxiao made her way to the rehab center. Then, while in the courtyard, she suddenly heard two distinct sounds.
