    Chapter 274: The Poisoning Case

Ye Xiaoxiao blinked. "I know, that’s why Li Zhen and I went out together."

Lu Hanchuan sighed. "If you actually ran into trouble, what could two girls do?"

Li Zhen was annoyed but didn’t dare to argue, so she grabbed her melon and went to eat by herself.

Ye Xiaoxiao, meanwhile, brought out another sweet melon from the room. "Take this back with you later. We’d never finish all this ourselves."

Lu Hanchuan: "How many melons did you buy?"

    Ye Xiaoxiao replied proudly, "Four!"

"Didn’t mind the heavy lifting, huh?" Lu Hanchuan knew Ye Xiaoxiao wasn’t one to brush off warnings—she was just new here and unfamiliar with the surroundings.

After sitting with Ye Xiaoxiao for a while, Lu Hanchuan left with the melon.

As soon as he was gone, Li Zhen came shuffling over.

"No worries. Next time, we’ll catch a ride with their army truck. Saves me the trouble of borrowing a bicycle."

Ye Xiaoxiao: "Where did you borrow the bicycle from?"

Li Zhen: "From Head Zhao! Out of the four of us, only Head Zhao has a bicycle. Speaks volumes about our clinic’s resources, doesn’t it?"

    Ye Xiaoxiao nodded.

The Head had a vehicle, which already made him top-tier here.

In the evening, Ye Xiaoxiao tidied up the things she had bought during the day. The two wolf pelts weren’t needed for now, so she set them aside.

The layered-sole cloth shoes with embroidery felt comfortable to wear. In a few decades, these would probably sell as scenic spot souvenirs.

After spending the day together, Ye Xiaoxiao noticed Li Zhen’s attitude toward her had changed significantly. Now, when helping with tasks, Li Zhen wasn’t just in it for the money.

Ye Xiaoxiao’s workload was light, so she often read medical books and took notes in her free time.

She also discovered that the base had a nursery, and she often saw children running around.

Sometimes, when the kids came to the medical office, Ye Xiaoxiao would hand out candy to them.

These children belonged to the base workers and rarely got parental attention, but they were well-behaved. When Ye Xiaoxiao gave them candy, they’d bring her little gifts in return.

Of course, to Ye Xiaoxiao, these were mostly trinkets—sometimes a strangely shaped rock, other times a tiny grass-woven critter.

She kept them all on the medical office desk. As the collection grew, it looked quite amusing, like a collection of knickknacks.

Before long, it was time for Zhou Shengyang’s stitches to be removed. Since Ye Xiaoxiao had done the suturing, he came back to her.

    Jiang Leyin accompanied him.

Ye Xiaoxiao: "Stitch removal is quick. You came all the way here just for this?"

Jiang Leyin just wanted to see Ye Xiaoxiao in action, as word had gotten around the base—

The fiancée of Regiment Commander Lu was doing her rotation at the clinic, and she was someone who knew her way around acupuncture.

After getting acupuncture treatments, the researchers all found their neck pain eased up significantly, and their minds felt sharper when going over documents later.

Word spread, and soon more people wanted to try it out.

Ye Xiaoxiao was easygoing—though it wasn’t an official medical service, she still helped those who wanted acupuncture.

Truth was, Ye Xiaoxiao just wanted to keep her acupuncture skills sharp.

But to everyone else, it just showed how kind and caring she was.

When Jiang Leyin heard these comments, she couldn’t help feeling competitive, sizing Ye Xiaoxiao up in her mind.

At the same time, she wanted to see Ye Xiaoxiao’s real skill.

Zhou Shengyang was only here because Jiang Leyin pushed him to come.

Rubbing his head, "That easy, huh? But Dr. Jiang said your suturing technique was quite complex."

Ye Xiaoxiao got up and ushered him into the treatment room.

Once the tools were sterilized, she began removing the stitches.

Ye Xiaoxiao worked with quick, light hands—Zhou Shengyang barely noticed before she finished.

"Damn, Dr. Ye, you’re good. You haven’t even graduated yet, but you already have such advanced medical skills."

    Ye Xiaoxiao smiled modestly.

A lot of her Western medicine know-how was from decades in the future, when medicine was more advanced, giving her an advantage.

Jiang Leyin watched the whole thing and had to admit—Ye Xiaoxiao’s hands were surgeon-level steady.

She took a deep breath, her gaze lingering on Ye Xiaoxiao’s striking face.

No wonder Lu Hanchuan was into her.

"All done, but make sure to keep it disinfected. Grab some iodine to take home—use it every day."

Ye Xiaoxiao was reminding Zhou Shengyang of the precautions.

Zhou Shengyang thanked her and bolted—the CO and Political Commissar had a meeting today, and he couldn’t be late.

When Zhou Shengyang was gone, Ye Xiaoxiao realized Jiang Leyin hadn’t left.

"Is there anything else, Dr. Jiang?"

Jiang Leyin smiled slightly. "This clinic’s pretty barebones. If you run low on supplies, hit me up."

    Ye Xiaoxiao: "Thank you."

But they weren’t running low on anything critical yet.

    ...

Back at base, the commanding officer and Political Commissar had arrived for a meeting, with Lu Hanchuan and Zhou Shengyang accompanying them.

The local military headquarters was located in a city quite far from here.

They were here to debrief the last mission and provide guidance for the next one.

After the meeting, it was impossible to return the same day.

They had dinner at the base and rested overnight.

Early the next morning, they ate breakfast at the base again.

Both meals were eaten in the mess hall. Normally, nothing would happen, but this time, right after breakfast, the two leaders and some soldiers started vomiting and experiencing diarrhea.

    "It might be food poisoning..."

    Jiang Leyin determined after checking.

The issue likely stemmed from the food, but the bigger problem was that even without IV drips, the base didn’t have enough medication to help everyone.

"Get the medics over here. The necessary medicines must be sent ASAP."

In such a situation, Lu Hanchuan could request medical supplies from the city hospital.

Ye Xiaoxiao and her group had no issues with their meals. When she, Li Zhen, and Yang Juan arrived and saw so many people poisoned, they looked shocked.

"If it's food poisoning, how come you're okay?"

Ye Xiaoxiao looked at Lu Hanchuan.

Lu Hanchuan replied, "We did have dinner together, but not everyone got sick."

Zhou Shengyang added, "Yeah, I’m fine too."

Ye Xiaoxiao first approached a random patient and took their pulse.

Then she asked what they had eaten for breakfast.

"It was the usual stuff, except we had an extra bowl of soy milk. The canteen made it special because the leaders were here for guidance..."

A pale-faced young soldier moaned in pain, collapsed weakly, unable to muster any strength.

Ye Xiaoxiao said, "It might be soy milk poisoning. Soy milk can seem to boil before it's fully cooked—undercooked soy milk is toxic."

After careful recollection, Lu Hanchuan confirmed he didn't drink any soy milk.

The canteen staff were trying to help, but it backfired.

Lu Hanchuan had already sent someone to get medicine from the city, but the situation here needed to be stabilized.
