Chapter 455: Visitors to the Island Again
by 一盞紅爐Chapter 455: Another Visitor on the Island
Once at the hospital, Ye Xiaoxiao learned that the elderly man was a retired official.
After contacting his family, the man’s son quickly arrived at the hospital.
He’d rushed over so quickly that he hadn’t even taken off his work uniform.
From the looks of him, he was likely a police officer—and one with a high rank at that.
“Officer, thank you so much today. If it weren’t for you, my father might have…”
The man, who looked to be in his forties, was on the verge of tears when mentioning his father’s accident.
“Officer, since you’re here now, I’ll head out.”
Ye Xiaoxiao quickly excused herself.
The man took out a bulging envelope. “Officer, please take this.”
Ye Xiaoxiao waved her hands in refusal. “No, no, helping others like Lei Feng shouldn’t involve taking money.”
“Officer, then could you at least tell me your name and where you live?”
She didn’t see the harm in sharing that, especially since Changjing Island was quite far away—they might never cross paths again.
So Ye Xiaoxiao replied, “I currently live on Changjing Island. My name is Ye Xiaoxiao.”
The man thanked her repeatedly, but Ye Xiaoxiao just felt she’d done the right thing.
Now that the family had arrived, she made her exit.
Thinking they wouldn’t meet again, Ye Xiaoxiao kept the incident to herself after returning to the lodging.
To her surprise, on the day she and Lu Hanchuan took the ferry back home, she bumped into the man again.
Ye Xiaoxiao had bought a pile of things in the city, and hauling them aboard made for quite the spectacle.
“Feels like we’re heading to a flea market,” Ye Xiaoxiao whispered.
Lu Hanchuan reminded her, “We *are* hitting up the city market.”
Ye Xiaoxiao: “No way! This is called strategic shopping.”
Mid-conversation, someone suddenly approached.
It was the man she had met at the hospital, who came over to greet her.
“Dr. Ye, I thought I’d see you on the island. Didn’t think I’d see you on the ferry.”
The man was the old man’s son, named Xu Kaiyuan.
Though Lu Hanchuan noticed he was wearing a senior police officer’s uniform, he didn’t recognize him.
Ye Xiaoxiao: “Hello, Officer Xu.”
Ye Xiaoxiao introduced him to Lu Hanchuan, explaining that they had met after her good Samaritan act.
That’s when Lu Hanchuan found out about the whole incident.
After further conversation, they learned that Xu Kaiyuan was going to the island regarding the recent raid on the gambling den.
Given how entrenched the local syndicate was, if they hadn’t launched a surprise attack in the typhoon's aftermath, there would have been losses.
Still, it was Xu's leadership that secured the win.
Officer Xu had come to the island this time for a meeting.
Lu Hanchuan and Xu talked at length, as both happened to be familiar with the situation.
Ye Xiaoxiao couldn't be bothered listening to their conversation and headed to the deck to catch the breeze instead.
Xu Kaiyuan got off the boat with some colleagues and even helped Xiao Xiao and Lu carry their belongings.
Lu Hanchuan took Xiao Xiao home before heading out to tend to his work.
Back home, Xiao Xiao unpacked everything they had bought in the city.
The city offered far more than the island, so she had purchased a new lamp and household essentials.
After arranging everything, the place felt more lived-in.
Over the next few days, Lu Hanchuan was busy with work, and Xiao Xiao kept busy with her own work.
The summer saw frequent downpours, and by September, the weather had cooled down.
Xiao Xiao received a few more letters from home, including startling news—a VIP from Beijing might visit the island soon.
Why? To seek medical treatment from Ye Xiaoxiao.
At first, Xiao Xiao was skeptical—what would bring a VIP to this backwater?
But then she thought maybe it wasn’t a serious illness, and they just wanted to stay for a few days for some R&R.
Lu Hanchuan didn’t know about this yet, and since the person hadn’t arrived, Xiao Xiao decided not to mention it for now—Song Guangjing had only briefly mentioned it in the letter.
However, the real shock came when Song Guangjing actually arrived on the island first.
As she harvested beans in the garden, Xiao Xiao suddenly heard barking.
The chickens in the yard were so frightened they hid in the coop.
Turning around, Xiao Xiao saw several familiar figures—Lightning! Fluffy! Ermo?!
Even though she had been away from home for months, the dogs clearly hadn’t forgotten her, tumbling over each other to reach her and rubbing against her legs.
Xiao Xiao crouched down, petting each of them. “My goodness! How'd you make it here?”
Even if someone had taken a boat, hauling multiple pets over such a long distance seemed impossible.
Once the dogs settled, Xiao Xiao walked to the gate—and saw Song Guangjing making his way up the path.
"Shifu! You mentioned someone was coming, but you didn't say they'd arrive so soon."
Song Guangjing was accompanied by Song Guoxian and Song Xiaoguang. Ye Xiaoxiao greeted each of them in turn.
"No need to rush—I just wanted to scout the island first to see if it’s suitable for the patient," Song Guangjing said with a chuckle, stroking his beard.
"It’s nice and cool now—very comfortable. Come on in."
Ye Xiaoxiao ushered the guests inside.
Song Guangjing dismissed her concern. "We also wanted to see where you live. This little courtyard has charm. The island’s peaceful, and this compound looks tidy."
Upon entering the yard, Song Guoxian noticed the vegetable patch and chicken coop. "You’ve done a great job keeping this place up."
Ye Xiaoxiao: "Life’s been pretty relaxed on the island. Though I work at the clinic, there aren’t many patients. Sometimes I check up on the fishermen in the village."
Song Guangjing nodded. "Xiao Xiao, I’m not here to grill you on medicine."
He really had missed her.
You’d think he wouldn’t fuss over his own student, but Song Guangjing had been deeply concerned about her.
Even Song Xiaoguang tagged along this time, showing how much they all cared about Xiao Xiao’s life here.
Ye Xiaoxiao: "Of course I know. Come inside and sit for a while. But how did you get here? Don’t tell me you took a boat?"
Song Guangjing: "The higher-ups sent a helicopter, so the journey wasn’t too tiring."
Ye Xiaoxiao led them to the living room and prepared tea.
"So that’s why you brought the dogs!"
She patted Lightning’s head. The poor old dog must’ve had a rough trip.
Song Guangjing: "Figured you could use the company, so we brought them for you."
Once they’d settled in, Ye Xiaoxiao turned to the main topic.
"Shifu, so who’s this big shot you talked about? What’s their condition? What if I’m not up for it?"
Song Guangjing set down his teacup and grew serious. "If I didn’t think you could handle it, I wouldn’t have sent them to you. But this patient’s condition is indeed very difficult to treat..."
He briefly explained the symptoms.
Ye Xiaoxiao fell silent after hearing it.
"Well, we’ll see when they arrive."
For now, she was just glad—her shifus had come all this way to see her.
