Chapter 101: Getting the Certificate
by 六六小可爱Chapter 101: Getting the Certificate
Duan Yuzhen made quite a scene, and with Wen Yan and Lin Donghua crying, everyone was watching.
Jiang Yu had heard it too and felt somewhat helpless, like she had tried to do something nice but ended up causing trouble.
He Feiyan said, "Don't take it to heart, Duan Yuzhen is just that kind of person. Everyone in the Duan family is decent, except for Duan Yuzhen, who’s always been a bit off."
You could tell a lot about the Duan family’s values just by looking at Old Master Duan, but they had spoiled Duan Yuzhen.
Jiang Yu smiled bitterly, "I'm not taking it to heart, I just think it's unfair for Sister Lin."
Duan Yuzhen’s behavior was the epitome of ingratitude.
"Feiyan, come in and bring the dishes out," He Tingyue called.
We had some leftover garlic sprouts from yesterday, perfect for stir-frying with cured pork.
He Tingyue’s cooking was always flavorful because he wasn’t afraid to use plenty of oil.
The cured pork sizzled to a golden brown, making everyone’s mouth water.
The sausage didn’t need to be cooked—just sliced and laid over the rice.
He Feiyan swallowed. "Big brother, aren't we having steamed buns today? Are we eating rice?"
The staple food at home was usually steamed buns or noodles, with rice only occasionally.
But today, we’re breaking tradition with some steamed rice.
He Tingyue said, "Take it out and mix it, combine the sausage with the rice."
"Gulp." He Feiyan could hear her own swallowing sound.
When mixed, the rice would soak up the rich flavor of the sausage, making it incredibly tasty!
"In Guangdong province, there's a way to eat sausage called clay pot rice, where the sausage is placed on top of the rice." He Tingyue had never eaten it, so his version wasn’t quite authentic, but it had a similar charm.
As He Feiyan worked, she couldn’t help but make sounds of anticipation.
"Lilan, bring some bowls!"
"Coming!"
He Lilan was quick and brought out a stack of bowls.
He Zhengdong grumbled, "Why are there only five bowls!"
He Lilan glanced at him, "Brother, didn't you say you didn't want any?"
He Zhengdong held his stomach and grumbled, "I can still eat one bowl!"
He Feiyan teased, "Are you sure? You have to finish it, okay? We don't waste food in our family."
He Zhengdong's head drooped. "Then give me half a bowl."
He had just stuffed himself with two huge peaches, so his belly was already full.
But even if he was full, he would still force down that half bowl of rice.
He Feiyan laughed and playfully nudged his head before filling half his bowl with rice and adding two extra slices of cured sausage.
Both the cured meat and sausage were salty, so He Tingyue only cut half a piece.
In addition to the cured meat with garlic shoots, there was also a large plate of crackling-fried cabbage and a plate of spicy potato shreds.
Besides the rice, they also brought out the steamed buns from that morning.
"Jiang Ye, eat your fill, don’t be polite."
Jiang Ye looked at the dishes on the table, feeling tempted, but he didn’t dare to pick up his chopsticks.
Except for the meal he had at East Guest Coming on Jiang Yu’s wedding day, he had never eaten such a good meal.
He Feiyan noticed his awkwardness and shoved the chopsticks into his hand.
"Eat, eat more. There’s plenty, and it’s enough for everyone."
After making sure Jiang Ye was settled, He Feiyan was too busy stuffing herself with fragrant white rice to say more.
Each bite of rice paired with a slice of sausage was absolutely delicious!
She hardly needed the dishes on the table; as long as there was sausage, it was enough for her.
He Lilan, on the other hand, preferred the cured meat, which was a perfect match with the garlic shoots.
He Zhengdong didn’t care what it was, as long as it went into his stomach.
"These spicy potato shreds are delicious," Jiang Yu thought. She could finish half a plate of them without rice.
He Tingyue smiled and placed two slices of cured meat on her plate.
"The cabbage is good too, fried with lard."
The oil rationed according to the number of people on the ration card each month wasn’t enough, so He Tingyue occasionally bought some suet and rendered lard at home.
Suet was hard to get, but he had connections at the meat processing plant who saved some for him.
This meal left Jiang Yu extremely satisfied.
She used to think her cooking was good, but compared to He Tingyue’s, it was like comparing a novice to a master.
By the end of the meal, everyone was so full they were burping.
He Feiyan stood up voluntarily, "From today onwards, whenever we eat at home, we’ll take turns washing the dishes. I’ll wash today, Zhengdong tomorrow, and Lilan the day after. Any problems?"
He Zhengdong immediately raised his hand, "What about sister-in-law? Why doesn’t she have to wash? She didn’t cook the meal."
He Feiyan knocked his head, "Because she’s eldest brother's wife! When you get married to someone like her, you can skip the dishes too."
He Zhengdong silently glanced at the cold and stern He Tingyue and shuddered.
Forget it, he’d rather wash the dishes!
He Tingyue was strict and wouldn’t hesitate to spank someone if they misbehaved. He had no intention of becoming anyone’s wife.
"Any more objections?"
He Zhengdong, He Lilan: "None!"
"That's settled then!" He Feiyan carried the cleaned bowls and chopsticks into the kitchen.
Jiang Ye felt too embarrassed to just sit there and followed her inside.
"Let me do the washing."
"No, you're a guest here. It's not your job."
Jiang Yu called out, "Jiang Ye, come out. Let Feiyan handle it."
Jiang Ye had no choice but to come out again, feeling uncomfortable the whole time.
"Sis, maybe I should head back. I still need to find Yun Shan."
Jiang Yu nodded. "Alright. Take the remaining half of the cured pork for Yun Shan."
Having received so many peaches, it wouldn't be polite not to return the favor.
She looked at He Tingyue for his opinion.
He Tingyue smiled. "It's up to you."
Jiang Yu left two sausages behind and packed the remaining half of the cured pork and half of a sausage.
After Jiang Ye left, Jiang Yu yawned lazily, feeling the post-meal drowsiness set in.
After a good meal, all she wanted to do was sleep; her body felt limp.
He Tingyue wiped away the tears from her eyes. "Why don't you take a nap?"
Since she had nothing to do in the afternoon, Jiang Yu decided to take a nap.
"Want to join me?"
He Tingyue's eyes flickered slightly. "Wife, are you inviting me?"
After last night, Jiang Yu knew exactly what he was thinking and rolled her eyes. "I'm not inviting you, you're being naughty!"
He Tingyue laughed and gently pushed her into the room, locking the door behind them.
"I won't bother you. Just sleep."
Jiang Yu lazily covered her mouth and yawned again.
"Remember to wake me."
They still needed to get their marriage license in the afternoon, and if they went too late, the office would be closed.
"I will," He Tingyue said, tucking her into bed.
Watching her sleep peacefully, he couldn't help but climb into bed and take a nap with her in his arms.
Since he had wedding leave from the factory, he didn't have to work that day, but he went to take care of some business in the morning.
In the afternoon, he took the day off, which extended until the day they visit the bride's family.
With the three younger siblings away at school, they had a quiet afternoon to themselves. They slept until 3 p.m.
Today is the day we get married, and Jiang Yu feels that it is a day to celebrate properly.
She put on a flowery blouse and carefully braided her hair into a French braid, tying a silk scarf at the end of her braid.
"You look beautiful," He Tingyue said, not taking his eyes off her. "After we get our certificate, let's go to a photographer and take a picture."
"A photo? Of us?" Jiang Yu looked surprised.
She had lived for twenty years and had never had her picture taken before.
He Tingyue smiled, "Yes, our wedding photo. We'll take one every year and put together a photo album, so when we're older, we can look through them."
