Chapter 215: Not Keeping One’s Word

When they arrived at South Street, Jiang Yu and her brother found the Yang family.
Master Yang and his family were waiting for them.
"Please, come in."
Master Yang's family hadn't split up the household, so there were many people in the house, old and young.
With Mrs. Yang back from Heilongjiang Province and bringing three children with her, the once spacious house felt crowded.
"Master Yang, Jiang Ye told me you're planning to retire, so I came to discuss the job with you."
Master Yang nodded, "This job was meant for my son, but they’re not into auto repair and have gone their own way. Now, Jiang Ye’s the one taking over, and their idea is..."
"Got it, let’s cut to the chase and talk price." Jiang Yu was straightforward and didn't like beating around the bush.
Hearing this, Master Yang’s two sons perked up.
"There’s not much competition at the bus station, and the benefits are good. My dad says you’re country folk, and landing this job is a stroke of luck."
The one who said this was Yang Shun, the eldest son of the Yang family.
Jiang Yu wasn’t against paying, but she didn’t see Jiang Ye as getting a free ride.
Master Yang was the one who saw potential in Jiang Ye and kept him on.
If he weren’t skilled, the bus station wouldn’t have kept him as an apprentice.
"Look, if Jiang Ye weren’t taking this job, even with money, you couldn’t just hand it to someone clueless."
"Master Yang, give us your price." Jiang Yu didn't like to talk too much off-topic with them.
Before Master Yang could respond, Yang Shun cut in, "Two thousand yuan, final offer!"
Jiang Ye’s face fell; the price exceeded expectations.
Master Yang shot Yang Shun a look, "Why don’t you just rob someone!"
Yang Shun complained, "Two thousand’s the going rate, what’s so high about that?"
With two thousand, the brothers could each pocket a thousand and move out, no longer having to squeeze together with the family.
Jiang Yu also thought it was high; her expected price couldn't exceed fifteen hundred.
In the end, Master Yang gave a fair price, "Twelve hundred, how about that?"
He genuinely appreciated Jiang Ye, who was willing to work and learn, and felt at ease handing over the maintenance work at the bus station to him.
Jiang Ye looked at Jiang Yu, waiting for her decision.
Jiang Yu nodded, "We can pay a deposit first, and then pay the balance after the job is settled."
Master Yang didn't haggle over these small matters and agreed.
Only his two sons were extremely dissatisfied; they could have asked for more, but their father was unreliable and didn't even know how to bargain.
Master Yang accepted a three hundred yuan deposit, saying he would take Jiang Ye to complete the procedures tomorrow and then collect the balance.
Everything was supposed to go off without a hitch, but the next day, Master Yang unexpectedly gave back the deposit, saying the job had already been sold to someone else.
Jiang Yu was livid, "Master Yang, you already promised us!"
They were set to handle the paperwork today, waiting for everything to be settled.
Master Yang was at a loss, apologizing over and over.
Family matters shouldn’t be aired out in public, so he didn't explain much to Jiang Yu.
Last night, his two sons griped that he was asking for too little money, and their wives called Master Yang's wife a burden, insisting on kicking her and their three children out of the house.
In the middle of all this mess, Yang Shun managed to find another buyer who was willing to pay two thousand.
Backed into a corner, he had no choice but to go through the formalities with that person. Although the process was still ongoing, the deal was pretty much done.
Now that the job had been sold, he had to disappoint Jiang Ye.
Jiang Yu never thought Master Yang would be so unreliable.
But getting mad wasn’t going to help; things had already reached this point.
"Sis, let it go. Master, I’ve picked up a lot from you over this time, thank you for your careful guidance."
Master Yang felt too guilty to face him, turning away and waving his hand.
Jiang Yu was down, seeing the job slip away.
"Sis, there's no need to be angry. I wasn’t all that into working at the bus station anyway."
Before, he’d been desperate for a job because his life was up in the air.
Since moving to the city, that need had faded.
He figured keeping things as they were was fine, starting as an apprentice at a repair shop, enriching himself, and learning more skills.
"Alright, we missed this shot, but there’ll be others."
Jiang Ye smiled, "Yeah, I’ve got what it takes, so I’m not sweating missed chances."
Seeing that he didn't care, Jiang Yu had nothing more to say.
When she got home, she found everyone standing in the yard like they were in a meeting, and she walked over.
Then she heard Xu Lihua clear her throat, "Our Hua’s got a job! Now our family’s got two breadwinners!"
Everyone came up to congratulate her, whether they meant it or not, they put on a good front.
Mother Sun turned her face away, pursing her lips.
She asked with a fake smile, "Old Xu, what kind of good job is it? Tell us so we can hear."
Xu Lihua puffed out her chest, it wasn't a shameful job, so she was determined to show off.
"It’s a mechanic job at the bus station, fixing those buses."
As soon as she said this, everyone looked at Jiang Yu.
Everyone knew that Jiang Ye was an apprentice at the bus station, and barring any accidents, he was supposed to take over Master Yang's job.
Jiang Yu smiled, "So Zhang Jiahua took over Master Yang's job. Congratulations."
Xu Lihua was quite pleased with herself, "Jiang Yu, I feel bad about the job situation. It's not about seniority. Master Yang just thought my Jiahua was more suitable."
Jiang Yu just smiled silently; it was just that Zhang Jiahua offered a better price.
Looks like Xu Lihua’s family is pretty well-off.
"You all chat, I’m heading home."
Li Saozi's eyes flickered, "Jiang Yu’s probably upset."
Jiang Ting gloated, "For sure, but the job wasn’t in Jiang Ye’s name, so changes are normal."
Lin Hongxia nodded, "Exactly, Jiahua is a city person; jobs should naturally go to him first."
Xu Lihua giggled, covering her mouth, wishing she could throw a big celebration in the courtyard.
He Feiyan only found out afterward that Jiang Ye didn't get the job.
"What happened? Clearly Jiang Ye is Master Yang's apprentice; it doesn’t make sense to skip him and give it to someone else."
Jiang Yu shrugged, "We didn’t offer as much as the others did."
He Feiyan muttered a few words, thinking Master Yang wasn’t trustworthy.
Jiang Yu smirked, "Let it be."
With Zhang Jiahua having a job, Xu Lihua felt more confident.
For several days, she talked about it every day in the courtyard until everyone was sick of hearing about it.
With the job settled, she started looking for a matchmaker to find a match for Zhang Jiahua.
Upon hearing this, the matchmaker said, "Old sister, isn’t there someone suitable right in your courtyard?"
Xu Lihua was stunned, "You're not talking about Duan Yuzhen, are you? She’s been married before; she’s not good enough for my son. What are you joking about?"
The matchmaker's smile deepened, "No, think again."
Xu Lihua thought through everyone in the courtyard and finally settled on He Feiyan.
"You mean Fei Yan?"
