Chapter 103: My Mother’s Job Can Only Be Mine
by 六六小可爱Chapter 103: My Mother's Job Can Only Be Mine
The next day, Jiang Ye personally delivered twenty pounds of cotton.
Jiang Yu counted out twelve yuan to give to him, but he refused.
"Sis Yunshan said it should be calculated at the acquisition price for you."
The acquisition price was four mao per pound; she only needed to pay eight yuan.
Wang Yunshan thought that since it was for Jiang Yu's friend, they shouldn't profit from it.
Jiang Yu pushed the money back to him, saying, "Tell her I’m making money, so it’s only fair to pay her."
Since Jiang Ye had other things to do, she didn’t hold him up, and she herself needed to deliver cotton to Xie Feifei.
"I'm going to deliver cotton to Feifei; you wanna come?"
She was asking He Tingyue, of course.
He had been on leave for the past few days, and now it seemed like she was busier than him.
He Tingyue nodded, "Let's go; I'll take you."
Since it was his day off, he didn’t want anyone else to take up Jiang Yu's time.
They took the cotton directly to Xie Feifei's house, where Aunt Tang had been keeping an eye on the door all morning, moving quicker than them.
"Xiao Huang! Huang Ying! That girl came looking for you again yesterday!"
Her shout drew a crowd from the neighboring houses.
Jiang Yu: "?"
Huang Ying opened the door, clearly annoyed. "Aunt Tang, can you be quieter? The whole neighborhood could’ve heard you."
Aunt Tang chuckled awkwardly, her eyes fixed on the things He Tingyue was carrying.
"I was just worried."
Jiang Yu said, "Aunt Huang, I’ve brought the cotton for you. Shall we go inside and talk?"
Huang Ying nodded. "Alright, Aunt Tang, you all can go back now. I'll talk to Jiang Yu about it."
"Alright! Don’t forget!"
Huang Ying waved them off and led Jiang Yu and He Tingyue into the house.
Inside, He Tingyue opened the bag to show her. "Twenty pounds, all here. Do you want me to weigh it, Aunt Huang?"
Huang Ying waved her hand and directly gave out eighteen yuan. "I've known you for more than a day; I trust you. Those people are my neighbors. Last time I was talking with Jiang Yu, Aunt Tang overheard us."
He Tingyue frowned. "Do they want some too?"
He immediately wondered if this would cause any trouble for Jiang Yu.
A big reason for bringing Jiang Ye into the partnership was that he was worried it might affect Jiang Yu negatively.
Huang Ying said, "I only agreed to help ask; I didn’t say there would definitely be any. If you don’t want to, I’ll just reject them."
Jiang Yu hurriedly said, "No need. Did Aunt Huang mention the price?"
"Yes, one yuan and ten fen."
"Alright, I’ll have someone else deliver it. His name is Lai Liuzi."
Huang Ying had previously tallied the amounts that those people wanted, totaling thirty-three jin.
"Deliver it directly to Aunt Tang’s house next door and let her divide it herself. She’s home every day."
Jiang Yu agreed, "Alright."
When they went out, Aunt Tang actually came over again.
"Aunt Huang, how about it?"
Huang Ying said helplessly, "Aunt Tang, let Jiang Yu go first. We don’t have the items right now; they’ll be delivered tomorrow, just wait at home."
Aunt Tang looked disappointed. "Tomorrow? Can you spare some for me first?"
"I can’t. My Feifei is getting married, and I’m in a hurry to make quilts for her."
Huang Ying didn’t pay her any more attention, saw Jiang Yu and her husband off, and closed the door.
After delivering the items, Jiang Yu went home and continued making clothes.
He Tingyue watched from the side, "This jacket might be a bit small for me."
The cotton jacket she was making was black, and he subconsciously thought it was for him.
Jiang Yu chuckled, "This is for Jiang Ye."
He Tingyue looked sullen. "Why are you making his first?"
"I’ll hurry and perhaps give it to him during his return visit. Are you really comparing? This might be the first new piece of clothing Jiang Ye has ever worn." Jiang Yu teased him.
He Tingyue didn’t respond, letting Jiang Ye have it this time.
They were busy at home until the afternoon when the courtyard suddenly buzzed with activity.
It was said that Duan Yuzhen had brought her fiancé home to get engaged.
Jiang Yu immediately put down what she was doing and pulled He Tingyue to sit at the door and eat peaches.
"If only we had some sunflower seeds. Let’s buy some next time."
He Tingyue handed her another piece of peach, "Alright, there’s a set amount every year; we haven’t bought any for our home yet."
Since no one in the family likes them.
"Is this Yan Wenxuan’s first visit? How come they’re talking about getting engaged?"
He Tingyue wasn’t very interested in the affairs of the courtyard, but Jiang Yu was enjoying the scene, so he had to say something.
"Probably because of what happened yesterday."
Yesterday, Duan Yuzhen had a major falling out with her family, and she couldn’t wait to get out of there.
She didn’t have a job, so naturally, the only way she could move out was by getting married.
Jiang Yu snorted, “She must have terrible taste if she’s into Yan Wenxuan.”
He Feiyan, who had just walked in, paused in her steps, “Thanks, I feel like I’m being dissed.”
He Tingyue said calmly, “Indeed, her taste is bad.”
He Feiyan rolled her eyes; there was nothing she could do about it, as this was her own embarrassing history after all.
“I deliberately walked past the Duan family’s door just now, guess what I heard?”
Jiang Yu’s eyes lit up, “What did you hear?”
“Duan Yuzhen and Yan Wenxuan aren’t planning to move out after they get married!”
Jiang Yu was stunned for a moment before saying, “What does that mean? Is Yan Wenxuan moving in?”
He Feiyan nodded vigorously, “Yes! It’s said that Yan Wenxuan’s sister and her family have come from the countryside. His brother-in-law is going to take over his father’s job as a night soil collector, and their house is too small to accommodate everyone.”
Jiang Yu thought about it for a second and shook her head.
“That’s probably one of the reasons. He must have other motives.”
He Feiyan patted her on the head, “You’re pretty sharp, sister-in-law. I also heard Duan Yuzhen demanding to take over her mother’s job.”
Now that you think about it, there are quite a few jobs in the Duan family.
Old Master Duan used to be a fitter at the steel rolling factory, but later his second son took over the job.
His wife, the old lady, has passed away, but she was an accountant at the Second State Cotton Mill. Later, the eldest son, Duan Hongmin, took over the job.
Then, for the sake of his eldest son, Duan Jianren, Duan Hongmin gave up the job again, letting his son take over. A single job passed down through three generations.
Wen Yan is a teacher, a job she earned on her own before marrying Duan Hongmin.
Now, the reason Duan Yuzhen is making a fuss is that she believes since her brother took over their father’s job, Wen Yan’s job should rightfully be hers, as that would be fair.
Jiang Yu sighed softly inwardly, “How is that fair? Doesn’t she have a younger brother? If she took over Wen Yan’s job, would that be fair to her brother? It’s not that the job can’t be given to her, but she’s clearly been taken in by Yan Wenxuan.”
Even if she took over Wen Yan’s job, how would Duan Yuzhen’s salary be enough to support the whole family, including Duan Hongmin, Wen Yan, and even Old Master Duan?
And even before they’re married, Yan Wenxuan is already trying to get his hands on the Duan family’s jobs. How could he be expected to take care of his in-laws in the future?
“Did they agree?”
“Of course not, the whole family is in chaos.”
You could hear Duan Yuzhen’s voice even from the other side of the wall, as she targeted Lin Donghua.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to! You want to kick me out so you can take over my mother’s job! Lin Donghua, I’m telling you right now, my mom’s job is mine! You can forget about it!”
