Chapter 331 Dividing the Family
by 六六小可爱Chapter 331: Dividing the Family
After the previous incident of cutting ties, Jiang Yu once again appeared in Nanhe Village, startling many villagers.
Not many in the village knew she'd been reinstated. Although Wang Meili was aware, she hadn't spread the word.
If others found out, they wouldn't congratulate her but would instead mock Wang Meili for being shortsighted in cutting ties with such a promising daughter.
Thus, everyone's impression of Jiang Yu remained as it was the last time they saw her—avoiding her like the plague, afraid of bad luck.
He Feiyan laughed, "Sis, he looked at you like you were bad news."
Jiang Yu: "...You seem quite proud of that."
She laughed like a fool from a rich family.
He Feiyan covered her mouth and giggled, "Sis, having everyone scared of you is a skill too."
Jiang Yu rolled her eyes at her, "You should keep it down."
They arrived at the right moment. As they got to He Youfu's door, they heard a fight.
Jiang Yu didn't rush in but stood at the door listening for a while.
She found out Chen Xiuying had set up He Qianqian with another guy—a widower older than He Youfu.
At first, she only talked about how well-off the guy was, not his age or that his two kids were older than He Qianqian.
He Youfu and Liu Junmei didn't say yes or no, just left it up to He Qianqian to decide if she wanted to meet him.
He Guangcai and Chen Xiuying pushed hard to convince her, using both sweet talk and pressure, and finally got He Qianqian to say yes.
But when she saw him, she was shocked to find out he was old and a widower.
She tried to bolt but the old widower stopped her, who almost tried something with her.
After barely getting away and coming home, she didn't dare tell the truth, just said she wasn't into him.
Chen Xiuying thought she was ungrateful and made a scene at home for days until He Qianqian couldn't hold back and told her parents the truth.
This made He Youfu and Liu Junmei furious, who called He Guangcai and Chen Xiuying heartless.
Chen Xiuying felt she was too kind-hearted to introduce such a good match to He Qianqian, only to be unappreciated.
She cried and shouted that her good intentions had been trampled on.
Back and forth, the family started arguing again.
During the argument, Chen Xiuying brought up dividing the family again, saying He Guangcai's monthly salary wasn't high and there was no reason to keep supporting He Qianqian.
This time, He Youfu didn't indulge her. If they wanted to divide the family, so be it!
Just as he was about to go find the Veteran Party Branch Secretary to oversee the division, he saw Jiang Yu and her family.
He Youfu smiled bitterly, "Jiang Yu, when did you arrive? Why didn't you say anything?"
Jiang Yu pursed her lips, "I've been here for a while. I saw you were discussing something, so I didn't disturb you."
He Youfu sighed and waved his hand.
"Let's not talk about it now, come on in and have a seat."
Seeing Jiang Yu only made Chen Xiuying more determined to split the family.
If they didn't split up the family now, Jiang Yu would drag them all down.
"Sit down? Dad, we already agreed to split the family—let's just get it over with today. No one in the village wants anything to do with Jiang Yu anymore, but you’re still chasing after her. If we don’t split this family up, we’ll be lucky if we even know what kills us."
He Youfu’s face darkened, and he was gasping for breath.
"You! I’m still alive, and this family isn’t yours to run!"
Chen Xiuying shouted, "Fine! If I don’t get a say, I’ll divorce He Guangcai and take the kids back to my parents!"
Liu Junmei covered her face and said weakly, "Youfu, go get the Secretary and bring Guangcai home. Let’s just split the family."
He Youfu gritted his teeth; he only had one son, and splitting the family would make him the village joke.
But with the three women all pushing to split up, he couldn’t fight it.
He Qianqian dropped to her knees. "Dad, if we split the family, I’ll find a man to marry into our home. I won’t leave—I’ll take care of you when you’re old!"
Liu Junmei pulled her up, hugged her tightly, and burst into tears.
"Mom didn’t raise you for nothing. Whether you take care of us or not, this family has to split."
She just couldn’t stand Chen Xiuying; she’d thought about this back when He Guangcai got married.
Back then, she’d wanted He Guangcai to build a house outside so she wouldn’t have to live with them.
But back then, times were tough, and He Youfu shot it down.
Chen Xiuying sneered, full of contempt.
"You don’t even have a job—you’re still living off your parents. How are you going to find a man to marry in? How are you going to take care of your parents? All talk, no action."
He Qianqian looked away, embarrassed. "I won’t be jobless forever—I’ll get back to work someday."
Chen Xiuying curled her lip; she wasn’t buying it.
He Youfu made up his mind, sending someone to fetch the Veteran Party Branch Secretary and bring He Guangcai home.
Now everyone knew he was splitting the family.
"The captain’s only got one son—why split the family?"
"He’s fighting with Guangcai—who’s going to look after him when he’s old?"
"They say Xiuying set Qianqian up with someone, but Qianqian wasn’t interested—that’s what started all this."
"Isn’t this blowing things out of proportion? Qianqian’s old enough—she can’t stay home forever."
...
Everyone came to watch the commotion, and soon a crowd gathered around He Youfu's house.
When they saw Jiang Yu, everyone curled their lips, thinking she was nothing but bad luck.
He Feiyan chuckled, "Sister-in-law, they're treating you like a plague again."
Jiang Yu let out a soft snort but stayed silent.
Splitting up the family was straightforward. He Youfu handed over a share of the family's stuff and cash to He Guangcai, after which He Guangcai would take his wife and kids to set up a new place somewhere else.
The old Party Branch Secretary thought for a moment. "Youfu, if you split off Guangcai’s family, what happens to the house you're living in now? You can't just leave it empty and not let Guangcai stay, right?"
He Youfu replied, "They can stay if they want, but they’ll have to chip in three hundred bucks. Otherwise, what’s the point of splitting up?"
The old Party Branch Secretary asked He Guangcai for his opinion. He Guangcai clenched his jaw and gave a nod.
Chen Xiuying was thrilled, finally getting to call the shots.
"If everyone’s okay with it, let’s get the papers signed," someone said.
He Youfu paused. "Add this: the house I’m in now goes to my daughter later. My daughter Qianqian said she’ll bring in a son-in-law to look after us when we’re old. I’ve figured out it doesn’t matter if it’s a son or a daughter. There are unfilial sons, but there are also daughters who can be relied upon."
Hearing this, everyone started buzzing.
The old Party Branch Secretary wasn’t so sure. "What’s the sense in giving the house to your daughter? You have a son—why make Qianqian bring in a son-in-law?"
He Youfu straightened up. "The law doesn’t say I can’t leave the house to my daughter, does it? My daughter is willing to bring in a son-in-law, so why can’t I keep her by my side!"
He Guangcai felt his pride take a hit. He Youfu must think he’s unfilial, hence the idea of having He Qianqian bring in a son-in-law.
He couldn’t help but feel angry and dissatisfied with his parents.
"Dad, Qianqian doesn’t have a job. What ability does she have to take care of you in your old age?" He Guangcai snapped.
Liu Junmei shot him a cold glance. "Qianqian has no ability, but do you? You got into the meatpacking plant with the help of me and your dad. How much money and effort did we put in? Have you ever thought about repaying us over the years? From the time you got married until now, how much money have you given to me and your dad? If I can’t count on Qianqian, can I count on you?"
He Guangcai felt as if his face had been stripped off, burning with pain. "I’ve been giving you eight bucks every month!"
Liu Junmei sneered. "Eight bucks? Your wife and kids’ food, drink, and daily needs are all at home, and I have to take care of them. Is this eight bucks for me? Why don’t you think about it? You only give eight bucks a month, yet you had the nerve to ask Qianqian for twenty bucks before!"
He Guangcai didn’t want to continue the argument, afraid that if he said more, his underwear would be stripped off.
"I won’t argue with you. If we’re dividing the family, let’s do it. I’ll sign! From now on, I’ll move out. I don’t care about the family house."
The old Party Branch Secretary nodded. "Since there are no objections, let’s sign the agreement."
