    Chapter 410: Good Job Reporting

Zhao Qing ignored Sun Zailiang’s explanation, took the money, and left for the hospital without letting him accompany her.

Mother Sun couldn’t stand Zhao Qing ignoring her son, and her anger boiled over.

“What kind of attitude is this? So what if I gave her medicine? I did it for her own good!”

Sun Zailiang sighed helplessly. “Just drop it.”

“Why should I drop it?” Mother Sun snapped, raising her voice. “If she could actually carry a child, would I have given her this medicine? This medicine cost a fortune! If it didn’t promise a son, I wouldn’t have bought it!”

Sun Zailiang couldn’t bear to listen any longer and was about to tell her to shut up when he noticed several unfamiliar faces entering.

Jiang Yu, sensing the commotion outside, peeked out, eyebrows raised.

“Isn’t that Director Liang from the Women’s Federation?”

He Feiyan took a closer look and nodded in confirmation.

“It is Director Liang, but why is the Women’s Federation here?”

Director Liang’s expression was grim—clearly, something was wrong.

Mother Sun didn’t recognize Director Liang and snapped, “Who are you? Who raised you, marching into people’s houses like this?”

    Director Liang’s face darkened further.

“Comrade Ruan Xiuyu, we’re from the Women’s Federation. I’m Director Liang. We received a report that you’ve been pushing backward superstitions and forcing your daughter-in-law to take so-called magic son-conceiving pills. I’ve come to investigate.”

Sun Zailiang’s legs almost gave out. Aside from the director, who else in the Women’s Federation was surnamed Liang?

“D-Director L-Liang, my mother is blunt. Please don’t take it to heart.”

Director Liang gave him a cold look. “I don’t care if she’s blunt. I’m only asking—what kind of medicine did your mother give your wife?”

Xu Lihua was the first to step forward and report. “Director Liang, it was Ruan Xiuyu who bought it, claiming it would guarantee a son. Only she’d fall for that scam. If everyone only had sons and no daughters, how’d the human race survive?”

Director Liang praised her. “This wise comrade is absolutely right, with excellent ideological awareness. This is a new society—men and women are equal. Sons and daughters can both hold up half the sky!” *(Note: Refers to Mao’s famous saying emphasizing gender equality.)*

Mother Sun turned white as a sheet, too frightened to speak.

Director Liang turned back to her and rebuked, “Out with it, Comrade Ruan Xiuyu. Where did you buy this medicine? I want to see who’s behind this hocus-pocus!”

Before Mother Sun could confess, Fu Xianghong’s knees buckled, and she collapsed to the ground.

Her wounds still ached, and she broke into a cold sweat.

“I—I was deceived too! I didn’t spread feudal superstitions—I was tricked!”

Her blabbering confession spared Director Liang the effort of interrogation.

Director Liang’s expression remained stern as she nodded.

“And where did you buy it from?”

Fu Xianghong spilled everything, not daring to hide anything.

The angrier Director Liang looked, the more details Fu Xianghong revealed.

"What kind of scam is this—take it and you'll definitely get pregnant, take it and you'll surely have a son? Isn’t this pure deception?"

Such a crude con, and yet people actually fall for it!

"You two!" Director Liang pointed at them furiously. "Just wonderful! Starting tomorrow, both of you will report to the Women’s Federation (local women’s rights office) every day for reeducation. A full week of it—we must correct your backward thinking!"

So-called 'classes' were just criticism in disguise.

Old Mrs. Sun covered her face, weeping, feeling utterly humiliated.

She rounded on Lin Hongxia. "How dare you peddle fake medicine and deceive people? If Zhao Qing had really suffered harm from taking it, my Liangzi would’ve blamed me!"

Lin Hongxia found her accusation unreasonable and argued back, "How is this my fault? I never wanted to sell it in the first place—you were the one insisting on buying it!"

If she’d known the Women’s Federation would get involved, she wouldn’t have sold it at all.

She snorted. "I’m not even the one making a fuss, and you have the nerve to blame me! Think about it—why would the Women’s Federation show up out of the blue? It must’ve been your Zhao Qing who reported it! I haven’t even settled the score with you yet!"

It hit her like a ton of bricks—Old Mrs. Sun suddenly understood.

If Zhao Qing hadn’t said anything, how would the Women’s Federation have known?

She burst into loud sobs again, pounding Sun Zailiang twice with her fists.

"Look at your wife! All I did was give her a few doses of medicine—if she didn’t appreciate it, fine, but to turn on me like this! At my age, having to go to the Women’s Federation for criticism—how humiliating! This is how she repays my kindness? With spite?"

Sun Zailiang felt stuck between them, and his resentment toward Zhao Qing grew.

Yes, his mother was wrong, but she was still his mother—couldn’t Zhao Qing be more forgiving?

And now she’s gone and involved the Women’s Federation!

"Mom, stop crying. When she gets back, I’ll give her a piece of my mind."

Just as he was comforting his mother, Zhao Qing returned.

Xu Lihua was the first to speak. "Zhao Qing, was it you who reported your mother-in-law to the Women’s Federation?"

Zhao Qing went still. "The Women’s Federation?"

    She clearly had no idea.

But then she laughed. "I don’t know who reported it, but I should thank them—Serves them right! Good riddance!"

Sun Zailiang stormed out, his voice tight with anger. "What the hell is this? Do you even want this marriage to continue?"

At his words, Zhao Qing’s barely contained fury erupted.

"No more! I’m done with this marriage! Let’s get a divorce right now—and whoever chickens out is a bastard!" she roared.

Sun Zailiang had only been bluffing, putting on a show for his mother’s sake.

He hadn’t expected Zhao Qing to pull the divorce card, catching him completely off guard.

"You—what nonsense is this? Why drag divorce into this now? You’re being unreasonable!"

Zhao Qing shot him an icy look. "Tell me—did you tamper with the condoms?"

Sun Zailiang went pale, scrambling to deny it. "I didn’t!"

Old Mrs. Sun was thrilled and hurried forward to ask, "Zhao Qing, are you pregnant?"

Zhao Qing was so angry that tears welled up in her eyes, her eyes turning bloodshot—a sign of fury pushed to the limit.

"I just gave birth to Yanyan not long ago! She hasn’t even been weaned yet, and I said I wouldn’t have a second child so soon! You all conspired together, using sneaky, low-down tricks to get me pregnant. From the very beginning, you never listened to me! What am I in your eyes—just a tool for bearing children?" Zhao Qing screamed at them.

When she went to the hospital for a checkup and was told she was over a month pregnant with slight signs of a miscarriage, her world came crashing down.

Back then, to marry into the city, she had no choice but to latch onto Sun Zailiang.

She closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face—perhaps this was her retribution.

Xu Lihua eyed them with contempt, utterly unimpressed by the mother and son’s actions.

"People say I, Xu Lihua, am harsh, but my bark's worse than my bite. Yet, it's the knife in your back that kills you."

Old Mrs. Sun turned pale, feeling ashamed, but she still had to swallow her pride and beg Zhao Qing.

"When you just had Yanyan, you said you didn’t want a second child so soon, and didn’t I go along with it? But it’s been half a year now—having a second one isn’t too early anymore. I was just thinking, if you gave me a grandson sooner, I’d still have the energy to help raise them. Now that you’re already pregnant, you really shouldn’t get too worked up."

Old Mrs. Sun dismissed Zhao Qing’s anger.

Since she was already pregnant, no matter how furious she was, she’d just have to suck it up and give birth to the child.
