Chapter 690: Don’t Call the Police

While everyone was immersed in studying, the He family ran into trouble.

The old lady was shoved down the stairs by Wei Xiuru and rushed to the ER.

The incident began when Wei Xiuru tricked He Jundao into revealing the safe’s password, intending to steal the old lady’s belongings but was caught in the act.

During the ensuing argument, the old woman was pushed by Wei Xiuru and fell down the stairs.

He Dongqi was the first to discover the scene. By then, Wei Xiuru had already fled, so he rushed the old lady to the hospital.

Jiang Yu and He Tingyue learned of the incident from He Jundao.

When they arrived at the hospital, the old woman was still being treated.

He Dongqi sat by the entrance, looking guilty and distraught.

    He Tingyue asked, “Any updates?”

He Jundao shook his head, worried. “We don’t know yet.”

Jiang Yu glanced at He Dongqi, suspicion growing in her heart.

“Were you the first to find Grandma? Or were you present when your mother pushed her down?”

He Dongqi immediately snapped, denying gruffly, “Of course I wasn’t there!”

Jiang Yu asked calmly, “Then how did you know it was your mother who pushed her down?”

He Dongqi froze, his lips trembling slightly.

“When I found Grandma, she was still conscious. She told me.”

Jiang Yu said flatly, “Oh. So she wasn’t in critical condition then, still strong enough to tell you all this?”

“Enough!” He Jundao roared. “Your grandmother is still fighting for her life inside, and here you are, making insinuations about Zhengdong. What’s your problem?”

Jiang Yu kept her gaze steady, replying coolly, “Just reasonable suspicion.”

He Jundao sneered. “Seems to me you’re eager for Zhengdong to be the culprit so he can be sent to a forced labor camp!”

Jiang Yu didn’t argue further. Instead, she tried to use the hospital phone to call the police.

But He Dongqi stopped her, turning to He Jundao.

“Dad, we can’t call the police! For the sake of Mom’s years of devotion to you, give her a pass this time.”

He Jundao hesitated, torn between Wei Xiuru and his own mother, unsure of what to do.

He Dongqi pleaded desperately, “Dad, this is a family matter! Even if Grandma is angry, even if she’s conscious now, she might not necessarily call the police. Maybe she’ll be forgiving and forgive Mom? If the Tan family finds out, what will happen to my marriage?”

Unsurprisingly, He Jundao was convinced by his plea.

But while He Dongqi’s arguments convinced He Jundao, they didn’t work on Jiang Yu.

She still insisted on calling the police.

Only to be scolded by He Jundao: “You and the He family have long cut ties. What right do you have to meddle? Get out!”

He Tingyue gave him a cold stare, "You're afraid this matter might drag in He Dongqi, aren't you? You also have your suspicions, worried that what happened to Grandma might be related to He Dongqi, so you don't dare to report it to the police."

He Jundao went rigid, wanting to deny it, but his throat closed up, unable to make a sound.

He Tingyue's gaze was razor-sharp, like a knife, cutting right through him.

    "Today, we're calling the cops!"

He was dead set, and even He Jundao couldn't stop him.

He Dongqi's legs went weak, and he knelt on the ground, like a broken man.

    This is it.

He Jundao's eyes were red-rimmed, glaring daggers at He Tingyue's figure.

He clutched He Dongqi's hand, ground out, "Don't be afraid, your grandmother hasn't come out yet, the police can't question her. Even if she wakes up, she would never turn on you."

For the sake of her only grandson, she would push all the blame onto Wei Xiuru.

"But your mom... she's done for." He Jundao closed his eyes, choking back tears.

After He Tingyue and Jiang Yu reported the incident to the police, they only left after the authorities accepted the case.

In the evening, they returned to the hospital.

The old lady had been out of surgery but was still unconscious and needed further observation.

The doctor said that due to her advanced age and excessive blood loss, her internal organs were damaged. If she didn't wake up in the next two days, she might not pull through.

Jiang Yu turned her head and spotted a flash of relief in He Dongqi's eyes, narrowing her own.

    What a piece of work.

"Thank you, doctor. You've worked hard."

Fortunately, justice prevailed. That night, the old lady woke up.

Her first words upon waking were, "Where is Wei Xiuru?"

He Dongqi knelt by her bedside, holding her hand and weeping, apologizing to her.

"My mother was too nervous that day and ran away without coming back. Grandma, please forgive her."

The old lady yanked her hand away, "Forgive her? You really are my good grandson!"

She was cut to the quick by He Dongqi's attitude. For all her spoiling him, he would always side with his birth mother.

That day, during her argument with Wei Xiuru, she was pushed down the stairs.

He Dongqi didn't check on her first but instead let Wei Xiuru escape.

When her life hung in the balance, even her own grandson couldn't be relied upon.

He Jundao tried to persuade her, "Mom, Dongqi's wedding to the Tans is coming up. We can't afford a scandal. For the sake of our family, please be lenient this once."

The old lady's anger surged to her head, her face turning red and her pupils dilating.

    "You! You disgrace!"

He Jundao quickly grabbed her hand to comfort her, "Mom, it's not that your son is unfilial, but... Mom, Mom, what's wrong? Mom!"

    "He Dongqi, call the doctor!"

He Dongqi scrambled up from the floor, "Dad, don’t call the doctor! Wouldn’t it be better if Grandma just died? Then Mom could come back!"

The old lady convulsed violently, her face turning a sickly shade of purple, as if someone were strangling her.

Hearing He Dongqi’s words, she let out a choked, gurgling sound, her eyes terrifyingly fierce, like a wild beast’s.

Fortunately, a nurse making her rounds discovered the situation and promptly called for emergency medical assistance.

He Dongqi sat dazed by the door, seething with disappointment.

If the old lady were gone, wouldn’t all her things fall into his hands?

He silently prayed—better if she wasn’t saved, better if she just dropped dead.

Yet, against his wishes, the old lady was revived again.

Both he and He Jundao were scolded by the doctor.

"What kind of family acts like this? In her condition, can she handle any more shocks? One more episode, and she really won’t make it!"

He Dongqi mouthed an apology, but his eyes burned with hatred—he wished the old lady would die on the spot.

Unfortunately, this time, he had no more chances to get close to her.

Jiang Yu arranged for shift-based care, ensuring constant supervision.

The longer He Dongqi waited, the more desperate he grew, fearing the old lady would expose what he’d done. In his desperation, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Just as he attempted to smother the old lady with a pillow, he was caught red-handed in the act.

With irrefutable evidence, no matter how He Jundao begged, He Dongqi could not escape his fate.

Watching both Wei Xiuru and He Dongqi get arrested, Jiang Yu sighed deeply.

"If the old master knew from beyond the grave, I wonder if he’d regret inviting a wolf into the house."

In the end, the old lady didn’t make it. After a few more days in the hospital, she was rushed back to the emergency room—this time, beyond saving.

Her funeral was even bleaker than the old master’s. Neither of her sons attended; only He Tingyue and Jiang Yu handled the arrangements.

Aunt Xu came to weep bitterly, cursing He Jingyi and He Jundao as heartless sons.

After the burial, Jiang Yu locked up the He family’s foreign-style house, burying the He family’s history for good.
