Chapter 665: Send It to My Daughter-in-Law to Eat
by 六六小可爱Chapter 665: For My Eldest Daughter-in-Law to Eat
That evening, Old Lady Qian went to see Lin Hongxia again.
Last night’s argument was water under the bridge, and that didn’t stop them from watching TV together tonight.
During their casual chat, Old Lady Qian brought up the matter of Boss Deng.
"My poor son out in the countryside has it so rough..."
She went on and on, expressing both pity for Boss Deng’s misfortunes and worry over the issue of children.
"I don’t dare mess with my grandson anymore—Wang Moli would skin me alive. Tell me, what should I do?"
Lin Hongxia, upon hearing this, actually had an idea and offered her advice.
"I’ll introduce you to someone who can help you, but it’ll cost money."
Old Lady Qian eagerly asked, "Who should I look for?"
"You know Panjia Alley, right? There’s a witch living in that lane, surnamed Zhu. Go to her and get medicine for your daughter-in-law—it’s a surefire way to get a grandson!"
Old Lady Qian’s eyes widened. "Is it really that effective?"
Lin Hongxia thumped her chest. "Trust me on this. My eldest daughter, Xiang Hong, told me about it—it’s the real deal!"
With this assurance, Old Lady Qian went to Panjia Alley the next day to find Witch Zhu.
But she had already sent all her money to the countryside and didn’t have a dime to her name, let alone afford the medicine.
She initially thought of asking to owe, but Witch Zhu had quite the temper and outright showed her the door.
With her tail between her legs, she trudged home to ask Wang Moli for money.
Wang Moli gave her the stink eye. "Didn’t I already give you this month’s allowance?"
Old Lady Qian wrung her hands sheepishly. "You know how hard life is for Hong Yi’s eldest brother in the countryside. If I don’t help him, he might not make it much longer. So I sent all the money to him."
Wang Moli sneered. "You sent all your money to him, and now you come asking me for more? Nice try. Before you came back, we agreed—your monthly allowance is fixed."
Old Lady Qian knew she was in the wrong. The last incident had upset Deng Hongyi, and without her son’s support, she didn’t dare raise her voice in front of her daughter-in-law.
"Just lend me five yuan now, and deduct it from next month’s allowance."
Wang Moli refused. "Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. If I give you money now, you’ll just wriggle out of paying me back later. I’m already providing you with food and shelter—you should be grateful."
Seeing how heartless Wang Moli was, Old Lady Qian didn’t dare argue and could only mutter under her breath as she left.
Once outside, she turned to Jiang Yu to borrow money.
She had no shame—she acted as if Jiang Yu were family, bold-faced asking to borrow money.
"Your son is a department head—he’s not short on cash. And you’re coming to me for money?"
Old Lady Qian shamelessly replied, "What choice do I have? He only gives me five yuan a month for my allowance—it’s really not enough."
Jiang Yu squinted at her, head cocked as she studied her.
"You eat and live at home. Department Head Deng isn’t making you foot the bill for groceries either. Where’s all your money disappearing to?"
Don’t scoff at five dollars; it’s almost enough to buy fifty pounds of flour.
Old Lady Qian said flatly, "I sent it back to the countryside. Jiang Yu, cut the nonsense. Out of respect for Moli, lend me five dollars, and I'll pay you back next month."
Jiang Yu flat-out refused—she wasn’t friends with Wang Moli.
"What do you need five dollars for? Sending it to your son, is that it?"
To get the money, Old Lady Qian had no choice but to lay on the guilt trip in front of her and launched into her sob story.
"I heard that Witch Zhu's medicine is very effective—it’s a surefire way to get a son. I figured I’d buy a few doses and send them to my eldest daughter-in-law."
Jiang Yu was shocked to hear "Witch Zhu" mentioned again in just two days.
"Did you even bother checking about who Witch Zhu is? She's a con artist! How could you trust her quack remedies? You trying to kill your daughter-in-law?"
Old Lady Qian brushed it off. "I know what you're going to say—the Liu family's incident, right? Let me tell you, their daughter-in-law miscarrying had nothing to do with Witch Zhu! It's just that their daughter-in-law was too weak and couldn't even keep a child."
Jiang Yu: "..."
"I don’t have it. You can leave now."
Old Lady Qian froze, then suddenly shouted, "How could you not have money? Between the two of you, you pull in almost half a year's salaries for others!"
Jiang Yu said calmly, "Even if I had money, I wouldn't lend it to you. Old lady, for Department Head Deng's sake, I'll give you some advice. Superstition’s a waste of time. If there's a real health issue, go to the hospital. Whether it's a boy or a girl comes down to the man. Even if medicine is needed, it's not your daughter-in-law who should take it."
Old Lady Qian's face darkened. "If you won't lend it, then don't. Save your breath trying to fool me."
She spat on her way out, muttering that she'd never darken this door again.
Old Lady Qian never visited again, but Jiang Yu still told Deng Hongyi about the matter.
"Department Head Deng, you should keep an eye on this. That medicine is no good—it shouldn't be taken."
Deng Hongyi's face turned grim; he’d had it up to here with his mother.
"Jiang Yu, thank you. I'll be careful."
When he got home, he immediately read Old Lady Qian the riot act and warned her never to seek out Witch Zhu again—or else he'd send her back to the countryside.
Only then did Old Lady Qian finally settle down.
However, she held a grudge against Jiang Yu and often slandered her behind her back, cursing her for not being able to bear a son.
When Jiang Yu heard this, she just laughed it off.
She had never planned on having another child anyway.
But He Tingyue was displeased when he heard about it.
He hated people gossiping about Jiang Yu.
"Last time I spoke with Director Chen, she said there are actually quite a few cases of men getting vasectomies."
He had wanted to get one before, but Jiang Yu had vetoed it.
Now, the idea resurfaced.
If anyone dared to comment again, he'd shut them up with the fact that he'd had a vasectomy.
Jiang Yu bit her lip. She didn't want to get sterilized herself, nor did she want He Tingyue to do it either.
"Are there any side effects?"
He Tingyue replied, "Not really, at least not as severe as the side effects for women."
He had heard quite a bit from Director Chen—female sterilization can lead to infections, and some women might experience intermittent bleeding.
Hearing this, he became even more reluctant to let Jiang Yu undergo the procedure. He Tingyue looked at Jiang Yu and noticed tears welling up in her eyes, looking deeply touched.
He couldn’t help chuckling and wiped the moisture from the corner of her eye.
"Sweetheart, my sacrifice isn't as great as you think. The doctor said the procedure is reversible. You went through childbirth—why shouldn’t I do this?"
He believed his decision to undergo sterilization was far less of a sacrifice than Jiang Yu enduring childbirth.
"You haven’t already scheduled it with Director Chen, have you?"
He Tingyue shook his head. "No, I just consulted her. She recommended a more experienced urologist to perform the procedure. But I had to discuss it with you first before giving her an answer."
Jiang Yu buried her face in his neck and mumbled, "It’ll hurt."
He pulled her close, fingers threading through her soft hair.
"Silly you, didn’t it hurt when you gave birth to Ning Ning?"
