Chapter 643: Who Is He? Never Heard of Him
by 六六小可爱Chapter 643 Who’s He? Never Heard of Him
Zhao Dayi's face stiffened; his earlier words were all bluster.
If he actually picked a fight with Jiang Yu, he wouldn’t gain any advantage.
After a brief standoff with Jiang Yu, he caved first, reluctantly pulling out two hundred yuan.
"Not a shred of decency, just scheming against us. So much for being neighbors all these years," Zhao Dayi spat.
Yao Xiangling sneered coldly, "Don’t even call yourselves neighbors. If you dare steal from me again, don’t say I didn’t warn you!"
The Zhaos stormed off.
Back home, Zhao Dayi was still fuming.
He had worked in the government for years, was at least a mid-level official, and was an elder.
Yet now, he had been disrespected by some junior like Jiang Yu.
Just then, a woman walked out of the room and sidled up to him.
"Dayi, didn’t you promise to help my brother find a job last time? Have you settled it? We’re married—you’re not backing out now, are you?"
The woman draped over Zhao Dayi was Zhao Yuehong.
She had divorced Wu Jinshun and jumped straight into marrying Zhao Dayi.
Though Zhao Dayi was older, he worked in a government unit, which was a real catch.
At least in the short time she had been with him, Zhao Yuehong had enjoyed a taste of the high life—something Wu Jinshun could never have given her.
Already irritated, Zhao Dayi snapped at her words.
"Now that you’re married to me, you’re my wife. Quit favoring your family over me."
Zhao Yuehong’s expression darkened. "How am I siding with outsiders? You promised this before we got married. My parents won’t let it go. My cousin’s son is a high school graduate, quick-witted—just stick him in any office, and he’ll manage fine."
Zhao Dayi scoffed. "You think the government’s your personal hiring agency? You can just waltz in whenever you please? Beat it, I’m done talking."
Frustrated, Zhao Yuehong plopped down to sulk.
She shot Zhao Dayi a glance and said, "If you can’t get him a job, just hand over two hundred bucks. That’ll shut my parents up."
Zhao Dayi brushed her hand away, thoroughly annoyed.
"One after another, all you people do is demand money. I don’t have any! Even if I did, someone already squeezed it out of me."
Zhao Yuehong was startled. "Who dared extort money from you?"
Zhao Dayi ran a hand through his hair and finally told her about Old Lady Zhao’s situation.
Zhao Yuehong gasped. "Wait, your mom’s alive?"
She had never seen Zhao Dayi’s mother since moving in and had assumed she was already dead.
Used to life without a mother-in-law, the sudden appearance of one was something she wasn’t used to at all.
Zhao Dayi snapped, "What kind of nonsense is that? Of course my mother is still alive!"
Zhao Yuehong curled her lips, muttering to herself, *She might as well be dead.*
"That little hussy Jiang Yu, daring to swindle money from you—just wait, I’ll take her down tomorrow when I go find her!"
Zhao Dayi flicked his eyes up, ignoring her, and had little faith in her.
She was an illiterate woman—what kind of waves could she possibly stir up?
Little did he know, Zhao Yuehong wasn’t just capable of stirring waves—she could start a storm.
Early the next morning, Jiang Yu spotted Zhao Yuehong waiting like a hawk at the factory gate.
Without a word, Zhao Yuehong pointed at Jiang Yu’s nose and started cursing.
"You little hussy, don’t you know who I am? Swindling money from us! I suggest you’d better wise up and return the money right now, or you’ll regret it!"
The guard at the factory gate was keeping an eye on things. Hearing her make threats, he quickly called for security.
Jiang Yu crossed her arms and asked coolly, "How exactly are you going to be ‘ruthless’? You’ve come out of nowhere ranting, and I don’t even know when I supposedly owed you money."
Zhao Yuehong stuck out her chest. "Do you know who my husband is?"
Jiang Yu instinctively thought of Wu Jinshun, then shook her head.
They were already divorced—it couldn’t be him.
"No idea."
Zhao Yuehong smirked triumphantly. "My husband is Zhao Dayi, and he works in the government! He oversees so many people—even the department heads answer to him. How dare you swindle money from us!"
Jiang Yu’s expression remained indifferent. So the man Zhao Yuehong married was Old Lady Zhao’s son.
Zhao Dayi was old enough to be her father.
"I didn’t swindle anything. That was compensation he willingly gave to my great-aunt. We took it—rightfully ours."
"Like hell! Hand the money back now if you know what’s good for you, or we’ll show you what’s what!"
Zhao Yuehong’s eyes bulged wide with fury, her usually narrow eyes now round and glaring.
Jiang Yu tsked. "Do you hear yourself? Who told you I swindled money—Zhao Dayi? If he really thinks so, tell him to call the police."
Zhao Yuehong gave her a shove and sneered.
"We don’t need the police. My Dayi has plenty of ways to handle you."
Jiang Yu raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Like what?"
Zhao Yuehong bared her teeth. "Ever heard of Cao Yan?"
Jiang Yu feigned realization. "Oooh~"
Zhao Yuehong’s smirk widened—until Jiang Yu added, "Who’s that? Never heard of him."
Her smile froze, then twisted into a snarl.
"You’ve never heard of him? That just shows how ignorant you are! In this city, my Dayi pulls strings everywhere—cops and crooks alike! Cao Yan? He’s *the man* in the underworld!"
Her thumb was rigid, her chin jutting up defiantly, oozing pride.
Jiang Yu couldn’t help but recall what Lin Chenghui had said earlier.
This Zhao Dayi was indeed a government official, yet he was in bed with gangsters—highly suspicious.
“Gee, I’m terrified.”
Jiang Yu said "fear", but her tone was utterly indifferent.
Zhao Yuehong felt humiliated, clenching her jaw.
“Hand over the money!”
Jiang Yu shrugged. “I told you, the money was compensation Zhao Dayi gave us. We earned it fair and square. Thanks for coming to see me today. Now scram.”
Considering Zhao Yuehong had provided valuable information, she decided not to make things harder for her.
Zhao Yuehong stood there dumbfounded—was Jiang Yu off her rocker?
“I came to settle scores with you! Why are you thanking me?”
Jiang Yu smiled faintly. “Doesn't matter, anyway, just thanking you for your contribution to the people.”
If needed, she could even have a banner made for her later.
With that, Jiang Yu ignored her.
Unwilling to be dismissed, Zhao Yuehong tried to stop her, only to be interrupted by Wu Jinshun’s bellow: “Zhao Yuehong, what's your damn problem?”
She flinched involuntarily, then straightened up upon seeing him.
“I came to get my money back!”
Wu Jinshun threw Jiang an apologetic glance. “Department Head Jiang, please go ahead inside. I’ll handle her.”
“Alright. Don’t make a scene with her.”
Only after Jiang Yu entered the factory did Wu Jinshun drag Zhao Yuehong aside.
“What's your deal? Why are you bothering Jiang Yu?”
Zhao Yuehong raised her voice. “Didn’t I just say it? I’m here for the money! She conned my man out of two hundred, and I’m here to take it back!”
Wu Jinshun’s expression darkened. “Jiang Yu isn’t that kind of person. There must be a misunderstanding.”
Zhao Yuehong scoffed. “Only you would believe her. If she’s so great, why hasn’t she given you a leg up? Wu Jinshun, you’ll always be a useless fool, stuck in this dead-end job till you die!”
“Loser! Thank goodness I divorced you, or God knows how long I’d be dragged down by you!”
Wu Jinshun had heard it all before—the barbs didn't land anymore.
“Did Zhao Dayi come through for your brother?”
Zhao Yuehong faltered, stammering, “W-well, not yet, but any day now!”
Wu Jinshun gave her an impassive look, then turned and walked away.
Zhao Yuehong spat on the ground behind him. “Worthless!”
