Chapter 678 Mother and Son Reunion

After saying goodbye to Stephen and his wife and seeing Carl back to the hotel, Jiang Yu finally walked over to Qin Yunan.

"Senior Brother, are you going to see our teacher tomorrow, or will you come back with me tonight?"

Mentioning his long-lost biological mother, Qin Yunan's expression turned somber.

"I'll go now. Carl can rest at the hotel first. These two days, you just need to accompany Stephen. I’ll take care of Carl—he’s my business partner, and we’d already worked everything out before coming here."

Carl was shrewd, not as gullible as Stephen and his wife. Jiang Yu knew her tricks wouldn’t work on him, so she treated him with utmost sincerity.

On the way, Jiang Yu and Qin Yunan talked at length.

Though they had exchanged letters, many things couldn’t be written plainly. Qin family matters were too sensitive—it was fine to mention them briefly in person, but putting them in writing risked leaving a paper trail.

"Teacher had a very hard life before, but after her vindication, things got better. The dead are gone, and now what she cares about most is you, Senior Brother, and that sister I’ve never met."

Indeed, Old Lady Ma had a son and a daughter, both sent away in the past.

Jiang Yu had mentioned this sister many times in her letters but had never gotten any response from Qin Yunan.

Now, when she brought it up, Qin Yunan’s face turned icy.

"She chose to degrade herself. We’ve long since cut all ties."

He ran in powerful circles in Hong Kong and occasionally crossed paths with Qin Suyun.

But every time they met, it was as if they were strangers—they wouldn’t even nod at each other.

Jiang Yu was at a loss, unsure how to continue the conversation.

When they arrived at Old Lady Ma’s home, the nearly fifty-year-old man broke down crying like a child upon seeing his mother.

Mother and son embraced and cried together until Old Lady Ma took out a handkerchief to wipe his tears.

Chiding him, she said, "Don’t cry—you’ll embarrass yourself in front of Jiang Yu."

Jiang Yu replied, "Of course not. Senior Brother is just showing how much he missed you."

Old Lady Ma helped Qin Yunan up. When he had left all those years ago, his hair was still black.

Now, after so many years apart, his temples had gone gray.

Old Lady Ma’s eyes welled up. Fate’s cruelty had kept mother and son separated for so long.

"You’re home now—that’s all that matters! Tomorrow, we’ll go with Mom to visit your father’s grave. We’ll tell him you’ve come home!"

Qin Yunan burst into tears again, his face heavy with sorrow.

"Yes, I must tell Dad—I’ll always be a son of China!"

He had never betrayed China. He had come home.

Jiang Yu made tea for them, knowing tonight would be sleepless.

Old Lady Ma, ever the caring mother, never mentioned her own hardships over the years, only wanting to know about Qin Yunan's life.

Qin Yunan had married early but lost his spouse in middle age, and his son was taken in by his maternal grandfather.

Upon learning of the Qin family's troubles, he immediately cut Qin Yunan off completely to avoid disaster.

After Old Lady Ma's misfortune, he never showed his face again.

Qin Yunan didn’t blame him, recognizing that looking out for yourself is only human.

Similarly, Qin Suyun's husband swiftly divorced her and even stabbed the Qin family in the back.

Thus, when they left Beicheng for Hong Kong, only he and Qin Suyun remained.

"Jiang Yu sent you so many letters, yet you never mentioned Suyun. I knew then that you two had a falling out."

Qin Yunan’s face fell, and with a thud, he knelt again.

"Mom, as the eldest brother, I should have taken care of my sister. Suyun’s path is partly my responsibility as her brother."

When the two siblings first arrived in Hong Kong, life was extremely tough.

An old friend Old Lady Ma had contacted betrayed them, trying to seize all their possessions.

The local underworld was a tangled web where lives could vanish without a trace—a common occurrence.

New to the city, Qin Yunan dared not confront them directly and had to hide with Qin Suyun, living like fugitives.

Unable to endure it, Qin Suyun turned to selling her looks, becoming a mistress.

At this point, though Qin Yunan disapproved, he never considered abandoning his sister.

But after Qin Suyun latched onto a wealthy businessman, she became a completely different person. She colluded with gangsters to hire assassins, targeting the businessman’s wife and their two children.

She would do anything to climb the social ladder.

Qin Yunan chewed her out for her actions, only to be met with her complete rejection.

Back then, she was worked up but unrepentant.

"If I don’t eliminate her, how can I rise?" she spat. "Do you expect me to remain a hidden mistress forever? With her son gone, only a child from my womb can inherit his fortune!"

Her scheme failed, and after bouncing from man to man, she became a notorious high-society gold digger.

Eventually, she married a Singaporean tycoon, older than her father, outlived his first wife, and finally got her ring.

Years later, Qin Yunan could no longer judge her choices as right or wrong, offering only a resigned "you do you."

Old Lady Ma dabbed at her eyes quietly. "At this point, what more can I say? The chances of us meeting again are not likely."

"And you? You never remarried? Didn’t you find someone to accompany you?"

Qin Yunan smiled. "I did. I remarried and we had a son, not even six yet and quite mischievous."

He and his wife met in middle age, hit it off, and had a miracle baby, spoiling him rotten.

Mentioning his son, his whole face lit up.

Old Lady Ma felt somewhat reassured. "Seeing you happy puts my mind at ease."

Qin Yunan held her hand tightly. "Mom, when we get the chance, we plan to return and settle back home. Then we can stay by your side and take care of you in your golden years."

"If your wife doesn’t want to come back, it’s fine to stay in Beicheng. I don’t want to deal with mother-in-law drama at my age."

Though Old Lady Ma missed him occasionally, with Jiang Yu by her side, her days were quite pleasant.

The children were grown—there was no reason to tie them down.

Qin Yunan chuckled. "She’s actually from Beicheng too and wants to return."

Old Lady Ma nodded. "That’s good then."

She glanced at the time, realizing how long she and Qin Yunan had been talking.

"Are you staying here tonight? I’ve already got your room ready."

Qin Yunan nodded. "Yes, though the Friendship Hotel has reserved a room for me, I still have much more to say to you, Mom."

Old Lady Ma turned to Jiang Yu. "I forgot you were still here. Why didn’t you remind me?"

Jiang Yu hugged her arm, smiling. "I was so caught up in listening that I didn’t want to interrupt you and Senior Brother."

"You should hurry home. If you don’t leave soon, Ting Yue will worry."

Jiang Yu shook her head. "He knows I’m here—I told him. But I really should go back. Tomorrow I’m supposed to take Tina and Stephen to the Forbidden City, and I might oversleep. Senior Brother and Teacher should rest early too. There’s plenty of time to talk later."

Qin Yunan stood up. "Let me see you home. It’s not safe for you to go alone."

Jiang Yu didn’t refuse his kindness. He walked her to the alley entrance, where she waved goodbye.
