Chapter 378 How Can You Be So Heartless
by 六六小可爱Chapter 378: How Could You Be So Heartless
Qin Meijing was crushed. Jiang Yu was like uncut jade, her sharpness hidden in stillness.
Yet her brilliance was impossible to hide.
When she spoke with Tan Yongxin, her eyes shone so brightly that people couldn’t help but fix their gaze on her, unable to look away.
Compared to such an impressive woman, Qin Meijing couldn’t help but feel inferior.
Commander Qin gave her shoulder a pat and led her outside.
"Ready to let go now?"
Qin Meijing smiled bitterly. "Big Bro, I got over Brother Yue ages ago. I know he doesn’t like me."
Commander Qin glanced at her. "Then why did you come?"
Qin Meijing pursed her lips. "Guess I needed closure. I wanted to see what kind of person could truly deserve Brother Yue."
Commander Qin chuckled casually, asking, "And now? Do you think she’s worthy?"
Qin Meijing didn’t answer. She didn’t want to admit it, but they just fit together.
"Now, I think whether she’s worthy or not doesn’t matter. What matters is whether Brother Yue likes her."
Even if Jiang Yu weren’t as remarkable as she was today, as long as He Tingyue loved her, who could stop them?
Similarly, the person He Tingyue loved was bound to be special.
"Since you’ve let go, find yourself someone suitable and build a good life. Don’t keep worrying Mom and Dad," Commander Qin advised.
Qin Meijing scoffed. "Big Bro, why must marriage be the only way to build a good life? Putting everything into my work—isn’t that life exciting enough?"
Commander Qin chuckled wryly. "It is! Of course it is. I was mistaken."
After resting in the hospital for a few days, He Tingyue and Jiang Yu headed back to Beicheng.
Chen Yu would return later to participate in the reconstruction project in Yu’nan.
However, with his unusual circumstances, even after being cleared, some procedures still required his personal presence, so he traveled back with Jiang Yu.
They first returned to Tong’an Village. After all, it was a place Chen Yu had lived in for many years, and there were still people he needed to bid farewell to, along with packing up his things.
During his absence, Shen Daxin had waited at the village entrance every day, fearing Chen Yu wouldn’t return.
When he spotted the car they were in, Shen Daxin started yelling curses from a distance.
"You actually came back! I warned you—I’ve already written to report you! This time, nobody can save you. You won’t escape punishment!"
Lin Chang'an braked and looked back at Chen Yu.
"Engineer Chen, want to get out?"
Chen Yu waved his hand. "Don't mind him. My place is still ahead. Keep driving."
"Alright."
The car rolled forward slowly as Shen Daxin gaped, paying him no mind, which just made him angrier as he kept shouting abuse.
Chen Yu once again stood before his dilapidated little house, his state of mind completely different now.
He stepped inside, quickly packed a few belongings, and walked out carrying a tattered bag.
Lin Chang'an hurried forward to take it. "Engineer Chen, do you need to say goodbye to anyone?"
"Wait here for me. I'll take a walk and be back soon."
After all, this was a place where he had lived for years. Not all the memories were good, but there were still people and things worth cherishing.
They let him go alone as he walked away, his figure slowly disappearing into the distance.
Shen Daxin finally caught up, but before he could speak, Jiang Yu thrust the rehabilitation papers at him.
"Secretary Shen, Engineer Chen has been rehabilitated. Drop your usual tactics with him—it’s inappropriate."
Shen Daxin was stunned. "Rehabilitated? Who approved this? I didn’t agree! I refuse! He’s a traitor to the Party and should repent for his crimes for life. How could they clear his name!"
Jiang Yu remained calm, unfazed by his words.
"Your agreement doesn’t matter. What matters is that Engineer Chen has been rehabilitated. During the Southern Henan floods, he was given top honors for his role. The reconstruction efforts will need his leadership. Talent deserves its proper place—Engineer Chen is no ordinary man and shouldn’t be buried in Tong’an Village."
Shen Daxin gaped at the rehabilitation papers in his hands, as if trying to carve every word into his eyes.
That Chen Yu, whom he had pushed around and scolded whenever he pleased, had actually been rehabilitated?
He could still be rehabilitated?
Only when he saw the village chief personally escort Chen Yu out, grinning from ear to ear, did Shen Daxin snap back to reality.
"Chen Yu!" he cried urgently, seeking answers. "You’ve been rehabilitated? Is this real? What backdoor deals did you pull to get the higher-ups to clear your name?"
The village chief shot him a disapproving look. "Daxin!"
Chen Yu waved a hand dismissively. "The notice is already in your hands. What more do you want to ask?"
"How is this possible…" Shen Daxin muttered.
After enduring Shen Daxin’s oppression for so long, Chen Yu felt mostly just relieved now that he had been rehabilitated. He had no desire to exchange another word with him.
"Let’s go."
Lin Chang'an opened the car door for him. "Engineer Chen, so we’re heading back to Beicheng now?"
Chen Yu murmured in agreement. "Let’s go."
As the landscape slid past the window, Chen Yu’s vision gradually blurred.
Looking back to when he had first been sent to Tong’an Village, he had been completely broken, never imagining a day like this would come.
Though Chen Yu had been rehabilitated, reclaiming his family’s former property and the back wages owed to him would take time to sort out.
Jiang Yu temporarily lent him her house in Dongmin Alley to stay in.
Chen Yu didn’t bother with formalities and settled in right away.
"Get some rest now. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow to have dinner at our place and fetch the professor too."
Chen Yu nodded. "Alright. I know Beicheng well enough—I won’t get lost. I’ll walk around by myself. You all head back first."
After saying goodbye to Chen Yu, Jiang Yu and He Tingyue prepared to head home.
They had been away for ten days in total—not too long, but Jiang Yu missed Beicheng immensely.
“There’s no place like home,” she sighed.
He Tingyue mussed up her hair. “If you know home is best, don’t run off next time.”
Jiang Yu made a dismissive sound. “Let’s not have a next time.”
Just as they reached the entrance of the alley, someone shouted, “Jiang Yu is back!”
Like she was some kind of celebrity, returning to a grand welcome.
Before Jiang Yu had even set foot in the courtyard, He Feiyan and the two children rushed out first.
“Sister-in-law!”
Then, surrounded by them, Jiang Yu walked inside.
He Tingyue: “?”
Was he invisible now?
“Jiang Yu, you’re finally back.” Xu Lihua smiled warmly.
Zhang Jiahua had returned two days earlier and brought news that He Tingyue had suffered a head injury and needed a few days’ rest before heading back.
He Feiyan had been so worried that she took two days off from school, waiting at the gate every single day.
Finally seeing them return, everyone finally relaxed.
Mother Sun looked them over. “I heard Little He was injured?”
Jiang Yu nodded. “He was, but it wasn’t too serious. After resting for a few days, he’s much better now.”
“That’s good.” Mother Sun said nothing more.
Xu Lihua, however, suddenly asked, “Jiang Yu, have your brothers returned yet?”
Jiang Yu: “…I don’t know.”
It wasn’t that she hadn’t inquired, but she had been swamped with work lately, too busy to spare the time to look for them.
Later, when she saw their names on the list of rescued civilians and confirmed Jiang Hao and the others were safe, she stopped bothering about it.
“You’re so heartless!” Jiang Ting burst out angrily. “He’s your brother! You went all the way there and didn’t even think to look for him? How can you be so heartless!”
Jiang Yu laughed. “That’s rich, coming from you. Where were you when it mattered? This never would’ve happened if not for you! I went to Yu’nan for disaster relief on a mission—I wasn’t there for him. If you’re so worried about him, why didn’t you go rescue him yourself?”
