Chapter 683: I Give to Whomever I Want
by 六六小可爱Chapter 683: I’ll Give It to Whoever I Want
When He Tingyue returned, Jiang Yu told him about his grandmother's illness.
"Probably upset by Wei Xiuru. I heard she's still in the hospital."
He Tingyue paused. "Did you give them money?"
"Your uncle’s money is all spent on Wei Xiuru. Without the money, your grandmother wouldn’t have gotten into the hospital."
Besides, she was He Tingyue’s grandmother. For his sake, Jiang Yu couldn’t refuse.
"Are you going to visit the hospital?"
He Tingyue said, "Yes."
Before his grandfather passed, the only one he couldn’t let go of was his wife.
The old lady was scatterbrained, but he still had to do what he could for her.
Before heading to the hospital, Jiang Yu bought a bag of apples.
When they arrived at the ward, the old lady was already awake and in good spirits—at least with enough energy to scold Wei Xiuru.
"The money you borrowed—why should He Jundao pay it back? His monthly salary isn’t much to begin with. If he gives it all to you, how will he survive?"
Her complaining stopped suddenly the moment she saw Jiang Yu and He Tingyue.
Her expression soured. "What do you two want?"
Her attitude made Jiang Yu laugh.
"Old lady, we just paid your medical bills, and now you ask why we’re here? What else—to get our money back, of course."
The old lady froze, turning to He Jundao in surprise.
"She paid for my hospital stay?"
He Jundao looked uneasy. "Mom, I had no money on hand. Even if I sold things, it would take time. You fainted from anger—without payment, they wouldn’t admit you."
The old lady fidgeted, muttering, "I’ll pay you back later."
Jiang Yu switched gears. "Even if you pay it back, it shouldn’t come from you. You have two sons—they can’t just chip in nothing, can they?"
She gave He Jundao a look, her eyes filled with disdain.
Wei Xiuru dug in her heels. "We don’t have money right now!"
"Figure that out yourselves, not my problem. Comrade He Jundao, at your age, you’re not planning to mooch off your mother, are you?"
Jiang Yu’s words were sharp and direct. He Jundao, a scholar who prided himself on his integrity and valued face above all, felt utterly humiliated.
He turned away. "I’ll ask friends for a loan later."
Wei Xiuru glared at him. "Borrow again? We’re finally debt-free—I don’t want more. Mom, you know Jundao’s salary isn’t much. If you weren’t so tight-fisted, I wouldn’t have had to borrow in the first place. It’s not like when Grandpa was alive—we’re flat broke now!"
The old lady hesitated, remembering her husband’s final words—not to give away money lightly.
"Mom, you're getting old, what's the point of clinging to that money? If you don't spend it now, do you expect us to burn it for you after you die?" Wei Xiuru snapped.
Jiang Yu remarked coldly, "Old lady, don't forget Grandpa's last wishes."
The old lady was conflicted, but seeing He Jundao's financial struggles, her heart ached for him.
After all, he was her own son. Why should she be so stingy?
"Jundao, my bankbook is in the safe. I'll tell you the password later, and you can go get the money yourself. But only you can know it—don't tell anyone else."
The "anyone else" she referred to was naturally Wei Xiuru.
Wei Xiuru smirked. As long as He Jundao knew, she would find out sooner or later.
Jiang Yu frowned and looked up at He Tingyue.
He Tingyue was clearly unhappy but didn't argue with the old lady. Instead, he turned to He Jundao.
"Uncle, how can you have the nerve to take Grandma's money?"
He Jundao hung his head in shame, lowering his head to avoid his gaze.
"I know I shouldn't take the money, but I have no other option. Just this once—I'll pay it back as soon as I get my salary."
Jiang Yu scoffed. "Do you even believe that yourself?"
Before He Jundao could respond, the old lady came to his defense.
"It's my money, and I can give it to whoever I want! No matter who I give it to, it won't be you two! Your uncle is struggling, and instead of helping him, you go out of your way to make him feel bad. Is this how juniors should behave?"
The more He Tingyue objected, the more determined she was to hand over the money.
What use was this money to her? Better to let He Jundao spend it than take it to the grave.
"Jundao, that's final. Go get the money. This money is meant to be spent—no need to pay it back."
Wei Xiuru smugly smirked, shooting Jiang Yu a challenging look.
Jiang Yu ignored her and turned back to the old lady. "As long as you know what you're doing. If things turn out badly later and your children turn unfilial, just remember what you said today. Don't come crying to us."
The old lady snorted. "Even if I regret it, I won't come to you. You can don't worry."
He Jundao was also offended by Jiang Yu's words, as he didn't consider himself unfilial.
"She's my mother. I care about her more than any of you. I'll naturally take good care of her and support her in her old age."
With that, it made He Tingyue and Jiang Yu seem like meddlers.
Jiang Yu couldn't be bothered to engage further and pulled He Tingyue away.
It wasn't that she wished the old lady a difficult old age—she just had an instinctive distrust of He Jundao.
Any reliable man wouldn't have had an affair with his sister-in-law without his brother's knowledge.
He Jundao was incompetent, and if the old lady suffered, it would ultimately become He Tingyue's problem to deal with.
"Since we're already out, why don't we go check out those two courtyard houses?"
We had planned to check them out earlier but never found the time.
Since we happen to be in the area today, we might as well check it out.
Following the address, the two courtyards were actually really close, only about 200 meters apart.
But upon arriving, Jiang Yu realized she hadn’t brought the keys when she saw the locks on the doors.
"I must be losing it—I forgot to bring the keys."
Still, since they were already there, she still wanted to check it out.
What they found blew their minds.
She double-checked the address, making sure this was really the property left to them by the old man.
The courtyard, which should have been vacant, had people living in it.
Soon, a young guy came over.
Noticing them standing at the gate, he looked confused.
"Who are you looking for?"
Jiang Yu froze up, not answering.
He Tingyue asked, "Is this your home?"
The young man got defensive and nodded.
Jiang Yu took He Tingyue’s hand and smiled.
"No worries, we must be at the wrong place. Sorry about that."
They turned and left.
The young man hung around by the gate for a while, waiting until they were gone before heading inside.
Once out of the alley, Jiang Yu looked upset and confused.
"Did we go to the wrong place?"
"No."
Even though He Tingyue had never been to these two courtyard houses before, he'd checked them out when transferring them at the Housing Authority.
The places were in the old man's name—no one would dare give them away without permission.
