Chapter 54: An Unexpected Incident
by 狡猾天狗Chapter 54: An Unexpected Incident
The night was engulfed in smoke and battle, stretching on until dawn.
The long and dangerous night had finally passed, and the sky began to lighten, showing the first signs of dawn.
Outside the city walls, bodies lay scattered across the field, the ground pockmarked with craters—a testament to the fierce battle that had raged for a day and a night.
At this point, there was no more talk of shifts.
People rested when they could no longer hold on, then returned to the fight as soon as they regained some strength.
Xiao Hua had gone back into battle twice during the night and was now resting in a corner.
Xiao Hua scanned the area, frowning as she realized the zombie numbers weren’t decreasing as expected but were actually growing.
It was already daytime, and according to the zombies' fear of light, their numbers should have decreased, and their attacks should have gradually weakened.
When something strange happens, there’s usually a reason.
As Xiao Hua pondered the cause of this anomaly, the zombie horde suddenly grew restless again.
"Roar! Roar! Roar!"
The howls of zombies came one after another from afar, growing closer and closer.
Xiao Hua’s expression turned serious.
The indicator on the wall suddenly spiked, changing from '2' to '3' in an instant.
In the distance, fighter jets rose into the air, heading towards each city gate. The alarm blared once again, and the announcement echoed through every corner of the base:
"Level 3 zombies have appeared! Attention please! Level 3 zombies have appeared! Attention please!"
Five Level 3 zombies.
But the entire base only had three Level 3 enhanced individuals, one of whom was a spatial type.
The brief calm that came with the dawn quickly dissolved into chaos. The enhanced individuals watched the approaching Level 3 zombies with growing despair.
Xiao Hua and Xiao Zui exchanged a glance and both acted simultaneously.
A water dragon and an electric grid rose into the air again, blocking the five zombies. Bai Mu’s voice came through the loudspeaker:
"Xiao Zui, Xiao Hua, pay attention to your coordination and avoid clashing powers. The rest of you, continue the fight."
The others snapped back to reality, realizing they had been too shocked and frightened to remember their current dangerous situation.
They continued dealing with the lower-level zombies while subconsciously keeping an eye on the intense battle in the air.
What they had glimpsed at night was unclear, but now, seeing it firsthand, they gained a deeper appreciation for Xiao Hua and Xiao Zui’s immense power.
The idea that two people could hold off five Level 3 zombies seemed impossible—until they saw it with their own eyes.
Perhaps because Xiao Hua and Xiao Zui were the strongest fighters, the fighter jets arrived at the South Gate last.
What Xiao Hua and the others didn’t realize was that the person piloting the fighter jet was none other than Ji Yang.
Ji Yang had always been a troublemaker, and a few days ago, he had taken a big fall, which left a bitter taste in his mouth.
So, while Major Ji was away, he convinced his mother to let him out and snuck onto a fighter jet. After all, Ji Yang was a second-generation military officer and had been exposed to some things.
Remembering how his skin had been sliced inch by inch and then slowly healed over and over again that day, Ji Yang’s face throbbed, and his body began to shake.
Ji Yang glared at Xiao Hua with venomous eyes, slowly angling the fighter jet toward her, his right hand hovering over the missile launch button.
Three seconds later, Ji Yang adjusted the angle slightly again, this time aiming at Bai Mu.
That woman was too strong; better to start with the weakest and take out whoever he could.
He remembered how Bai Mu had rubbed salt in his wounds that day.
Bai Mu stood by the wall, directing the battle while keeping an eye on Xiao Hua and the others.
The fighter jets had arrived to assist the other three gates, but the one for the South Gate was delayed.
Bai Mu looked back, hoping the pilot would act soon.
But then, the fighter jet initially aimed at the zombies before slowly swiveling toward him.
Bai Mu’s eyes narrowed, his years of combat experience kicking in as he sensed the danger.
"Boom!" The missile launched.
Bai Mu immediately dodged to the side, reflexively protecting his vital areas and avoiding the blast, but he was still hit by the missile and knocked off the wall.
A large section of the wall collapsed, taking Bai Mu down with it.
"Old Bai!"
"Brother Bai!"
Xiao Hua jumped down from the wall, a water dragon rapidly diving beside her, just managing to catch Bai Mu before he fell into the zombie horde.
Xiao Hua pulled Bai Mu out of the water and quickly channeled her powers to stabilize his injuries. The water dragon spiraled upwards, carrying both of them back to the top of the wall.
They landed steadily, and Xiao Hua held Bai Mu in her arms, feeling the blood and torn flesh on his back.
Bai Mu was soaked in blood, and Xiao Hua frantically channeled her powers into him to barely stop the bleeding.
Xiao Hua glared up at the fighter jet as it tried to flee, her right fist clenched tightly, her back teeth grinding in anger.
Fine.
