Chapter 57: The Heavens Tolerate No Infractions
by 狡猾天狗Chapter 57: The Heavens Tolerate No Infractions
Xiao Hua was so weak at this point that she was unaware another "person" was present in the room.
Bai Mu’s body had been sealed by Xiao Hua, but his soul had somehow broken free from its physical confinement.
The "Bai Mu" in the room watched as Xiao Hua could no longer hold back and coughed up blood, heard her murmuring to herself, and saw her silently healing while still paying attention to him.
"Bai Mu" quietly kept her company, feeling a deep sense of inadequacy.
In this chaotic apocalyptic world, he possessed no great strength, and his intelligence had become the most laughable thing.
When Xiao Hua was in danger, not only was he powerless to help, but he even became a burden for her to take care of.
At this moment, a bitter smile appeared on "Bai Mu's" lips. Suddenly, he thought, *If I die, then so be it. It’s no big deal.*
After all, living only meant being a burden to others.
Xiao Hua reopened her eyes and looked around the room. Everything seemed as calm as ever, but her brows furrowed in concern.
She had the distinct feeling that someone was watching her.
"Bai Mu's" breath hitched. *Was he discovered?*
Xiao Hua checked again but found nothing unusual, so she had no choice but to give up.
After a moment, Xiao Hua wrapped Bai Mu in a protective layer of water. It made her feel a little more at ease.
Xiao Hua closed her eyes again and continued to recover her strength.
"Bai Mu" watched with his heart pounding. He suddenly wanted to be selfish and hold onto Xiao Hua tightly. How could he ever let go of someone like her?
As the sky gradually darkened, Zhao Ye returned for a brief visit. Seeing that both Bai Mu and Xiao Hua’s conditions were relatively stable, he prepared to leave for the battlefield again.
Just as Zhao Ye was about to leave, Xiao Hua called out to him. "Wait."
"What is it?" Zhao Ye turned to look at Xiao Hua.
Xiao Hua pondered for a moment before voicing her feelings. "There’s someone in the room. Go check it out."
Zhao Ye was puzzled. "Other than us, is there someone else in the room?"
Xiao Hua’s tone and gaze were firm. "I think so."
Zhao Ye: "!!!"
"Sis Hua... You shouldn’t say things like that without being sure." Zhao Ye shivered, a chill running down his spine.
Xiao Hua rolled her eyes. Of course, she knew not to say such things lightly. She urged Zhao Ye again. "Hurry up and check with your psychic energy."
Zhao Ye immediately complied and began to scan the room. After a minute, he exhaled in relief. "I don’t sense anyone. Maybe you’re overthinking it."
"Hmm." Xiao Hua’s brows were slightly furrowed, but she didn’t say anything more. Instead, she brought up another matter.
"Ji Yang is down there because I threw him out. Find somewhere to lock him up and patch him up, but don't go overboard with the bandages. Make sure he doesn't die."
"He dared to attack Brother Bai from the shadows—why shouldn't we kill him?! If you can't do it, I'll take care of it."
Zhao Ye was fuming, rolling up his sleeves and spinning around angrily like some bandit chief, ready to dish out justice on the spot.
Xiao Hua mocked him with a smile, glancing at Zhao Ye with a lazy shrug. "You think I'd hesitate to kill?"
"Uh..." Zhao Ye choked, and given how she'd acted on the battlefield, it was clear she wouldn't.
Xiao Hua explained with a lazy shrug, "Precisely because he attacked Brother Bai, we need to wait until Brother Bai wakes up to deal with him."
"But Brother Bai won't wake up anytime soon."
"Then there's no choice. We'll just have to look after him... carefully." Xiao Hua's eyes turned cold, but her lips curled into a smile that could only be called "gentle."
Zhao Ye got the message and, thinking of the person downstairs, revealed a sinister grin.
After Zhao Ye left, Xiao Hua scanned the room again, her voice turning icy. "I don't care who you are—if you dare to..."
Before she could finish her threat, she sensed something unseen beside her, offering her goodwill.
"I hope it stays that way." Xiao Hua's expression softened slightly, and she glanced back at Bai Mu. The protective water barrier was still holding strong, so she stopped paying attention to whatever was in the room.
Xiao Hua hurried to recover her strength.
"Bai Mu" wanted to get closer to Xiao Hua but suddenly felt a tremor in his soul. A flood of fragmented memories surged into his mind, and "Bai Mu" crouched down in pain, forced to accept them.
By the time Xiao Hua had fully recovered and started absorbing the crystal nucleus to advance, dawn was breaking.
"Bai Mu" finally felt some relief. His soul slowly stabilized, but as he recalled his memories, his thoughts remained in turmoil.
It turned out he was not tolerated by the heavens. No wonder he'd been struggling since the apocalypse—when he first awakened his powers, got injured during the zombie horde, and now, infected with the zombie virus.
If not for Xiao Hua, he would have lost his life long ago.
"Bai Mu" suddenly wanted to laugh. Not long ago, Xiao Hua had asked him why he kept getting into danger, why his luck was so bad.
Now, he had his answer.
"Bai Mu" took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.
He had defied fate through countless lifetimes, failing each time. Even with Xiao Zui's luck on his side, the result should have been the same.
But Xiao Hua had appeared as an unexpected variable.
Xiao Hua had unintentionally protected Bai Mu all this time, making it this far.
Now that he had regained his memories, his talents and powers would soon awaken.
This was the last time he would be this vulnerable.
"Bai Mu" looked at Xiao Hua gently, his gaze so gentle it felt like you could lose yourself in it.
For the rest of my life, I’ll be the one protecting you.
