Chapter 595 Grade A Job
by 猫狸Chapter 595: A-Level Work
"Key?"
Su Bai reached up and touched the key tied to the hair tie on his shoulder—it was a key Su Xuan had given him.
To escape the trouble from the Red Moon Association, Su Xuan had hidden himself away in a city almost identical to Rainbow Locust City. This key was a gift from Su Xuan during their last meeting in that "Rainbow Locust City," and it served as the key to that city.
Su Bai's fingertips lightly brushed the surface of the key, his gaze dimming for a moment. The Headless Manager reacted instantly upon hearing the sound of the key striking, clearly picking up on something from it.
After a brief silence, the Headless Manager sat back down, quick and stiff, as if trying to hide his earlier slip-up.
"Nothing. I just 'saw' wrong."
With that, he said no more, and the entire office fell silent.
From the Headless Manager's attitude, Su Bai still picked up on something.
Since being reborn, very few Eerie Entities had actually sensed the presence of the "Ghost Witch" or "Puppeteer" within him. Although the ghost driver on Bus 444 had noticed it early on, ever since he officially became the owner of the Mist Shop, even the Fog City Lord, who claimed to be a fan of the Puppeteer, hadn't noticed anything off about him.
This time, Manager Jiao had clearly sensed Wu Heng's power on Su Bai, which is why he thought he was a "connection."
Was it because his powers were unstable? Because he'd been sleeping with Xiao Wu's shell lately? Or because Wu Heng had pulled out that marriage contract?
The puppets Wu Heng made were one-of-a-kind even in the nightmare world, so Su Bai knew that the shell Wu Heng was currently using, disguised as a human player, would never let any power from the Ghost Witch or Puppeteer leak out.
Thus, Manager Jiao could only have sensed something off about Su Bai himself.
But... "connection" or not, it added a bit of human warmth to the headless figure, as if the eerie entities outside were all trying to eat people, while those inside were seriously grinding away at their jobs.
And the Headless Manager's boss was probably the "Dream Builder" he'd mentioned.
Judging by the name, this guy might be good at building dreams?
With no real clues, Su Bai could only make wild guesses.
So what had this guy sensed from Su Xuan's key?
"Manager," Su Bai spoke, his tone still polite and proper, "I'm here to pick a job."
His gaze fell on the desk, where four folders of different colors were neatly arranged—red, black, yellow, and white, probably representing S, A, B, and C level jobs.
"I want to pick an A-level job." Su Bai's tone was calm, as if stating a decision already made.
After checking out the B-level jobs Pei Zhan and Wen Ya took today, Su Bai decided to aim higher.
"You look even weaker than the last guys." The Headless Manager's neck stump let out a cold snort, with a superior tone, even if he was just a department manager with only ten new hires. "When picking a job, you should think it over."
He rested his elbows on the desk, fingers interlaced, like he was resting on a chin that wasn't there. "Don't think that just because you've got a little of that big shot's power on you, you can get an easy job here. With that tiny bit of power you've got, that big shot—even I've heard of him—probably doesn't have time for you."
Su Bai listened quietly, a faint smile curling at the corner of his mouth.
His face and lips were still a bit pale, but that smile was clean, sincere, with a hint of undeniable determination.
"Thanks for the heads-up, Manager," Su Bai said softly. "But I think I can handle an A-level jo—"
"Speaking of which," the Headless Manager interrupted, his voice suddenly going up half a notch, slamming his hands on the table, his tone getting weirdly enthusiastic and excited, "Out of these ten new hires, you—only you—give me a real sense of someone who wants to fight and move forward!"
He sped up his speech, leaning forward again, as if about to jump out of his chair.
"What I admire most are employees like you, who, even when unwell, still face difficulties head-on, fear no hardship, and persist in striving! And I can also see a massive shadow behind you!"
"Shadow?" Su Bai was taken aback. "The shadow of that big shot you mentioned?"
"No, your own shadow! More precisely, the future you!" The Headless Manager stood up from his chair, spreading his hands, his tone impassioned. "The future backbone of our company culture, the future pillar of Jiaoxiang Memory Coffee Company!"
"..." Su Bai felt his headache starting again. "Manager, I'm here to pick a job."
"Don't worry, what I'm saying has nothing to do with any power you have. No matter how much power from big shots you carry, it won't make me think any differently of you." The Headless Manager emphasized again, his tone firm. "After all, our company never plays favorites—no background checks, no nepotism, no privileges! As the head of the comprehensive department, I'm purely, objectively, based on personal feelings... I really, really, really think you have potential!"
"You might be the star our Jiaoxiang Memory Coffee Company has been searching for, our rising star! As long as you keep working hard and stay steady, you'll definitely shine here in the future, becoming the inheritor and leader of our company's spirit and culture!"
"Oh, by the way, what's your name again?"
"..."
"Hahaha, none of that matters now. Of course, I won't stop someone I see potential in from taking on an A-level job." The Headless Manager walked out from behind the desk and personally handed the black clipboard to Su Bai, his tone turning serious. "But you must be fully mentally prepared."
"Although I personally, without any external influence, have high hopes for you, to temper our future company elite, I'll pick the most suitable job for you." With that, the Headless Manager emphasized almost word by word, "I'll make sure you feel just how hard it is to officially join our company!"
After saying this, the Headless Manager sat back down in his chair with a "thud," leaning back in a rigid posture, then raised one hand to make a crisp, dismissive gesture toward Su Bai.
Apart from lacking a head, he looked quite imposing.
"..."
When Su Bai pushed open the office door and walked out, his mind was still a bit jumbled. He felt this nightmare game was a bit strange.
"A-level job." Pei Zhan's expression changed the moment he saw the black clipboard in Su Bai's hand.
"Xiao Su, isn't this too risky?" Shen Guanlan stood not far away, looking at the black clipboard in Su Bai's hand with concern, her tone gentle but earnest.
But as text slowly appeared on the A4 paper, the other players couldn't help but curiously glance over. For them, how terrifying an A-level job was—this was crucial intelligence.
Then, Pei Zhan, who had walked up beside Su Bai, couldn't help but widen his eyes.
"Use the comprehensive department's coffee machine to make 30 cups of 'Midnight Memory Special Blend' coffee?!" Pei Zhan turned his head and saw the coffee machine placed next to the sofa, his face turning ugly. "This is an A-level job?"
