Chapter 642: Changing the Future 1

The response to the Director was a soft sigh.

That sigh was very light, yet it sounded like a breath held for ages finally released.

Then, Su Bai then heard Mr. Administrator's voice again—

"Your Excellency has already run simulations. In fact, before inviting Mr. Su here, you have performed countless simulations. Among those innumerable futures, there were indeed some favorable outcomes. You just refuse to admit it."

"But those simulated futures are not the ones I want." The Director's voice grew low, as if he had been dragged into a heavy obsession.

"Yet that is precisely what I want." Mr. Yu's tone took on a strange quality, as if he'd finally breathed a sigh of relief. "You are well aware of this, Your Excellency."

Su Bai had several memorable encounters with Mr. Yu. In those encounters, Mr. Yu always maintained a respectful, businesslike manner, yet there was a carefulness about pulling strings where higher-ups couldn't see.

No matter when they spoke, Mr. Yu seemed as if something had him tied up. Even when his tone was calm, there was a sense of being bound, as if he could be yanked back at any moment.

But now, for the first time, Su Bai sensed a hint of... freedom from him.

It was like someone who had been tethered for a long time finally had the chance to decide where to go on their own.

"Your Excellency, at least at this moment, I... don't want to be alone anymore." Mr. Yu's voice grew softer.

No sooner had he spoken than Su Bai found his surroundings changing once more.

This time, the previous battlefield was gone, and the blood-red sea had vanished. He stood in a pitch-black space, as if drenched in thick ink, rendering everything invisible.

Only a single beam of light shone down from the center, illuminating one spot.

Under that beam, an image emerged that made Su Bai's heart clench, even sending a shiver down his spine.

Illuminated by that solitary light was a massive... thing... like something out of a surrealist painting.

At first glance, it looked like a tangled mess of cables, as if some retired machine had been dismantled and piled up haphazardly. But if you looked closer, those "cables" were not metal or plastic; they were woven from human limbs and organs—thick and thin, twisted and knotted together, as if some force had pulled and fused them together.

The substance flowing through them was not electricity but viscous blood and a dense, crimson manifestation of the Red Moon's power. It was unsettling.

In stark contrast to this heap of bloody "cords" of flesh was a figure suspended in mid-air, wrapped in them.

It was a merman. His skin was pale, glistening with an almost translucent sheen under the light. His hair and tail were a soft silver-white, long hair cascading to the ground, spread across the tangled pile of blood-soaked "cords."

The silver-haired merman had his eyes closed, as if sleeping or perhaps already unconscious.

He was suspended high in the air, bound by countless blood threads, completely immobilized. The entire scene was eerie.

Under the spotlight, the merman's figure looked like a fallen angel, so fragile it seemed ready to dissolve into foam and scatter with the wind.

His presence seemed wholly out of place among that heap of flesh and remains—too dissonant.

Su Bai initially thought this was merely a fabricated illusion by the Director. But the next second, the merman, who had had his eyes closed, slowly opened them.

His eyes were like stagnant water, devoid of life, hollow, as if he had seen it all and grown numb.

Yet he looked straight at him, his gaze piercing through space.

"We finally meet, Mr. Su." The silver merman didn't speak, but the Administrator's voice echoed through the space.

Beside the silver merman was a strange figure in a black robe and white mask, gazing up at the merman in silence.

"Mr. Yu, Director." Su Bai called out both their identities.

At that moment, Wu Heng's voice appeared in Su Bai's mind. After the routine report of his own puzzle piece, Wu Heng—still wearing the guise of a boy—also materialized in this eerie space, standing at Su Bai's side.

"Time is short, so I'll make it brief." The silver-haired merman lowered his head, a tinge of weariness and determination in his voice. "If we truly want to change those simulated futures, the most effective way is to prevent more humans from entering this world."
