Chapter 217 Picking Up Fu Zhengtu from Work
by 黎家七七Chapter 217 Picking Up Fu Zhengtu from Work
Su Taotao came out of the Vice Dean’s office, and it was almost time to get off work. Fu Zhengtu had been working overtime for the past two nights, and including the days he had been on a business trip to the capital, their family hadn’t had a proper meal together in a while.
Su Taotao thought about it, since she was already here, she decided to go pick up Fu Zhengtu from work.
As she walked out, she suddenly saw the hillside across the way, covered in clusters of daisies.
She finally realized that the daisies often on their dining table came from here.
Su Taotao felt a sudden inspiration, walked over, picked a small bunch, hid them behind her back, and went to find Fu Zhengtu.
Fu Zhengtu’s office was a bit of a walk from the logistics area, and it took her nearly ten minutes to get there.
After the receptionist informed him, Fu Zhengtu rushed over, while the woman who had notified him trailed far behind.
When Fu Zhengtu saw Su Taotao here, it wasn’t a pleasant surprise but rather concern. Ignoring the presence of others, he took her hand and asked:
"Is something urgent going on?"
Don’t assume that just because Su Taotao often visits the base office, the management is lax.
In fact, it’s not. Only staff are allowed in the office area without an invitation.
They’re only let in after the guard post is notified, otherwise, they can’t even pass the first checkpoint. So Fu Zhengtu’s worry was unwarranted.
If something really happened, a phone call would’ve sufficed; there was no need to come in person.
Su Taotao looked at him, tilted her head, and smiled brightly at him: "Can’t I come see Fu Zhengtu without a reason?"
Fu Zhengtu quietly sighed in relief when he saw her relaxed expression: "Of course, you can."
Su Taotao took out the daisies hidden behind her back: "These are for you, and I’m here to pick you up from work. Are you still working overtime today?"
Fu Zhengtu smiled helplessly and took them: "I need to go back and wrap things up, wait for me for ten minutes."
He hadn’t had dinner with his family in days.
Su Taotao nodded: "Okay, I’ll wait for you. I drove here, so we won’t need to wait for the shuttle."
Fu Zhengtu’s smile froze at the corner of his mouth: "Alone?"
Su Taotao blinked: "I have my driver’s license, can’t I drive alone?"
Fu Zhengtu said: "You’re still a beginner. Let me or Xiao Lu accompany you a few more times before you drive alone; otherwise, it’s dangerous."
Su Taotao: "..." I’m an experienced driver, you know? The kind who has raced cars, just not in this time and era.
But could she say that? Of course not.
"I think I drive quite steadily, even the coach praised my talent. If you don’t believe me, I’ll prove it later."
Fu Zhengtu didn’t say anything more, handed her the daisies in his hand: "Hold these for me. I’ll be back soon; you can sit for a bit."
Su Taotao smiled and took them: "I’ve been sitting all day, I’ll take a walk at the entrance."
Fu Zhengtu: "Don’t go too far, I’ll be back soon."
Su Taotao: "Got it."
The receptionist who had been watching their interaction didn’t even notice that her eyes hadn’t moved and her mouth was still open.
Holy cow, is this really the stoic Fu we know?!
He must’ve been swapped out!!
If only we had phones and work groups back then, snapping a pic of this and sending it to the group would’ve blown it up.
The receptionist was dying to run in and spill the tea to the ladies, but she was stuck until her shift ended in a few minutes.
Su Taotao didn’t go far, just wandered around nearby with the flowers.
Zhou Weining appeared out of nowhere: "Why are you here again?"
Su Taotao gave her a blank look: "What’s it to you? Why are you always around?"
"I work here, isn’t it normal for me to be around?" Zhou Weining answered matter-of-factly.
Zhou Weining glanced around, clearly disappointed: "You didn’t bring Chenchen again?"
Su Taotao thought Zhou’s sister was a bit naive and didn’t feel like messing with her anymore, so she said, "Chenchen’s in preschool now."
Zhou Weining hesitated, bit her lip, and finally blurted out: "Hey, Director Su, is your factory’s preschool still hiring teachers?"
Su Taotao gave her a rare, slightly shocked look.
No way, this girl wouldn’t transfer to preschool just to see Chenchen every day, would she?
No wonder Su Taotao thought that—anyone could see how much she adored Chenchen.
Su Taotao shook her head. "No, we’ve got two, that’s plenty."
Zhou Weining said, "That’s because your factory’s still small. When it grows, more kids’ll go to school, and you’ll need more teachers."
Su Taotao said, "That’s later. Why are you asking, anyway?"
Zhou Weining wasn’t dumb. Su Taotao already said they weren’t hiring, so she wouldn’t blurt out she wanted to transfer there.
"Oh, nothing. Just a friend who loves kids wants to transfer and asked me to check."
If you said she wasn’t dumb, she still came up with this clumsy friend story.
If her eyes hadn’t been darting around, she might’ve bought it.
Fu Zhengtu and Zhou had already snuck up behind Zhou Weining, but she hadn’t noticed.
Su Taotao didn’t want to drag it out, so she nodded. "Sure, if we hire later, I’ll give you a heads-up."
Zhou Weining’s eyes, which had just dulled, brightened again:
"Really? Then you must tell me, my, my friend really wants to transfer, oh my... who..."
Zhou Weining touched the back of her head and looked back, swallowing her curse: "Brother, why did you hit me!"
Zhou knocked her again: "You still want to transfer to preschool to see Chenchen every day? You like him so much, can’t you see him now by going back with Zhengtu and sister-in-law? What are you thinking?"
Su Taotao: "..." It’s not the first time she’s had this idea, even Zhou knows?
Fu Zhengtu: "..."
Zhou Weining jumped up, her face flushed, "I already said it's not me! It's my—friend!"
Zhou Zheng was about to scold her again.
Zhou Weining darted away quickly, turning back to stick out her tongue and tease Zhou Zheng, "Can't catch me, neener neener..."
Zhou Zheng chased after her, "I'm going to get you today!"
...
Su Taotao and Fu Zhengtu naturally paid no attention to this lively pair of siblings.
This cheerful duo indeed brought a bit of fun to the otherwise serious and rigid base.
Fu Zhengtu automatically headed for the driver's seat, but Su Taotao grabbed his arm, "I said I'll drive."
Fu Zhengtu reluctantly moved to the passenger seat.
Then, from the moment Su Taotao pulled the handbrake and started the engine, his attention was completely focused on her.
Seeing that she wasn't flustered and drove out steadily and orderly, he felt a bit more at ease.
Su Taotao found his expression amusing, "You don't trust me much, do you, Fu?"
Fu Zhengtu's gaze, which had been fixed ahead, returned. He shook his head, "It's nothing. Driving is something that improves with practice. It's always good for a new driver to be cautious."
Su Taotao looked at him in the rearview mirror and smiled playfully, "Got it."
After that, Fu Zhengtu barely spoke to Su Taotao, his eyes mainly on the road ahead, occasionally paying attention to Su Taotao's maneuvers, his hand hovering near the steering wheel, ready to take over.
Seeing him so tense, Su Taotao couldn't act like a seasoned driver. She didn't drive often, and even if she had learned before, she didn't have many opportunities to drive.
She had only spent a little time at the driving school, and if she drove better than Fu Zhengtu, wouldn't that raise his suspicions even more?
So, Su Taotao drove very slowly and cautiously, doing her best to act like a beginner, not panicked, but certainly not an experienced driver.
After driving this stretch, Su Taotao felt like she had used up all her acting chops.
Why did she have to pick up Fu Zhengtu from work for no reason? If she had waited a bit longer before picking him up, she wouldn't have had to act so exhaustingly.
