Chapter 393 Returning to My Parents’ Home (17)
by 黎家七七Chapter 393: Returning to Her Parents' Home (17)
Su Donghan and Mrs. Su looked at Su Wenhao with a complex mix of emotions.
Su Donghan glanced at the things in his hands and sneered, "Did you swipe these from your father-in-law again?"
Su Wenhao grinned. "We're all family. What's theirs is mine. There's no such thing as 'swiping.'"
Su Donghan: "Save your kindness, but the Su family isn’t so poor that we need you to bring things from your in-laws to help out. Get out, and try not to come again in the future. The sight of you turns my stomach!"
Su Wenhao forced a smile. "Dad, Mom, this looks bad to block the door. Let me in first, and we can talk."
The soundproofing in the apartment building was poor, and nosy neighbors were already rubbernecking.
Not wanting to become a spectacle, Su Donghan and Mrs. Su hesitated for a moment, and Su Wenhao slipped inside.
The small living room was occupied only by Su Donghan and Mrs. Su. The silence made the atmosphere thick with tension.
"Dad, Mom, what I said earlier wasn’t what I meant. It’s just that with Rouran around, I had to keep up appearances for—"
Su Donghan raised a hand to cut him off. "What I said earlier was exactly what I meant. Pick a day to change your son’s surname, and I’ll pretend I never had a son like you!"
"Dad!" Su Wenhao cried out before hitting the floor with a loud thud. "Dad, I may be lazy and mooch off my in-laws, but I’m still a descendant of the Su family! My son will always carry the Su name!"
"You—" Su Donghan couldn’t bring himself to hit or scold him. This son was a real piece of work, but unlike his younger brother.
Given their family’s circumstances in this era, the Su household—a dual-income family where everyone was well-fed and clothed—was getting by alright. But with three children to raise, they weren't living large either.
Su Wenhao was genuinely lazy. He’d rather lie than sit, and sit rather than stand. Since childhood, he’d been silver-tongued, sweet-talking candy from everyone from three-year-old girls to eighty-three-year-old grandmothers.
His lifelong ambition had been to marry a wife who’d give him candy every day.
Qin Rouran—or rather, the Qin family—was practically tailor-made for him.
The Qin family had only one apple of their eye, Qin Rouran, whom Su Wenhao had managed to win over.
Of course, Su Wenhao truly treated her well. Otherwise, the Qin elders wouldn’t have treated him like their own son.
Su Donghan genuinely wanted to ship him off to the Qin family. After all, he wasn’t their only son—out of sight, out of mind.
"Dad, Mom, I know what you think of me—that I’ve got no backbone, that I’ve dragged the Su name through the mud. But I don’t see it that way. I don’t steal or rob. I’m playing my cards right, and I’m doing great. Plenty of people secretly envy me!"
Su Donghan and Mrs. Su: "..."
Su Wenhao shifted his aching knees and continued,
"Let me be honest with you. All these years, I’ve saved every penny I earned from work—I haven’t spent a single cent. It’s not that I’m unwilling to spend on you two, and don’t think I’m unfilial.
"My in-laws don’t care about my paltry paycheck. They’re happy to raise my child, and I’m happy to coast.
"Don’t worry—I know the score. If I brought my wife and kid back often, I’d just be burdening you, making you take care of them.
"Right now, you’re still spry and not wanting for anything. Let’s each live our own lives. When the time comes that you can’t work anymore, or if something happens and you need money, these savings will be your safety net. Isn’t that right?"
Not just Su Donghan and Mrs. Su, but even Su Taotao, who was holding onto Fu Zhengtu, was left speechless for a long moment after hearing Su Wenhao’s words.
Su Donghan and Mrs. Su didn’t know what to say. They had raised a son with no backbone, and now they were too ashamed to face their in-laws.
They also had no right to meddle in the affairs of Qin Rouran and Su Siqi.
What a failure!
Whether as parents or grandparents, they had utterly failed!
Su Wenhao's eyes were earnest. Seeing that Mr. and Mrs. Su remained silent, he thought they didn’t believe him. After digging around in his pocket for a while, he pulled something out and handed it to them:
"If you don’t believe me, I’ll give you my savings passbook to keep from now on. You can manage the money for me, and I’ll withdraw it only when there’s an emergency.
Dad, Mom, you made me so good-looking—I can’t just waste this face, right? I used it to find myself a sugar mama, and you two deserve all the credit for that.
So I’ll always be part of the Su family, in life or death, and so will my son. That doesn’t conflict with me continuing to mooch off my wife’s family."
Hearing this reasoning and looking at the passbook in their hands, Mr. and Mrs. Su were speechless for a long time.
