Chapter 398 Three Kids Make a Play
by 黎家七七Chapter 398: Three Kids Make Quite a Scene
Chenchen must've missed his friends.
Lately, he had been arriving at school on time every day.
When he was in G City, he had followed his uncle through streets and alleys, winning some trinkets and picking up others—enough to show off—well, share—at school for many days.
Guo Guo was totally jealous: "Chenchen, are your grandparents from a very rich family? How come they bought you so many things?"
Chenchen tilted his little head and thought for a moment, then shook his head and sighed:
"No, my grandparents work very hard. The house they live in is really small, and there's not even a kitchen. These things were won by my uncle when we played chess with neighbors."
Guo Guo wondered: "No kitchen at all? We all have kitchens here."
Chenchen thought again: "Well, not exactly none—it’s shared. Lots of families crowd into one small kitchen, cook their meals, and then carry them back home to eat."
The little friends were fascinated. Most of them were born at the base, and even those like Dongdong, who came later, didn’t live in shared housing—they had small yards and kitchens at home. They couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have a crowd of people crammed into one small kitchen to cook.
Anyway, it didn't sound like much.
"My grandma’s house has a kitchen too," Dongdong said.
"But how did you win all these things?" Rainbow Sister asked, holding a small spinning top.
Chenchen: "See this little spinning top? I won it from Uncle Zhou when we played Chinese chess. This matchbox was from Uncle Zhang when we played Chinese military chess. And this toy car..."
Chenchen rattled off several items, leaving his little friends amazed.
"Chenchen, you’re so amazing! You won so many things just by playing chess. We don’t even know how to play yet," Rainbow Sister said.
Chenchen replied: "It’s not that amazing. Maybe the uncles are older and their memories aren’t as good, so they lost." He added with a sigh:
"I didn’t even want to take their things at first, but my uncle said we won them 'fair and square,' so why not take them?
Sigh, I don’t even know what ‘fair and square’ means, but my uncle said to take them, so I did."
"Your uncle sounds really impressive too," Guo Guo said sincerely.
Chenchen nodded: "I don’t know if he’s that impressive. He often says just three sentences, and then my grandma goes after him with a feather duster. He’s so noisy when he’s home."
In the middle of summer, Su Wenhan, far away in G City, suddenly sneezed. He was sure it was because his little nephew missed him.
Chenchen talked so much about his uncle that even Dongdong and Pangpang really wanted to meet him.
By the time Chenchen finished sharing, the morning recess was almost over.
Fu Yuanhang went to Mr. Tang’s class, while Chenchen, Dongdong, and Pangpang were picked up by Zhou Linglan and Dongdong’s grandma.
Today, it was supposed to be Xia Zhiqiu’s mother’s turn to pick up the kids after school.
However, instead of Dongdong’s grandma, they were met by a dark-skinned man walking a big black dog!
"Chenchen, Dongdong, Pangpang… I missed you so much!"
As the dark-skinned man dashed toward them against the sunlight with Da Hei, the three kids waiting at the gate looked at each other.
Dongdong: "Who is this black guy? Should we get out of the way?"
Pangpang: "But the black doggy looks like Uncle Mu's Da Hei."
Chenchen: "This dark-skinned man's voice also sounds a bit like Uncle Mumu. Could it be Uncle Mumu?"
"Impossible, right?"
"Probably not?"
Dongdong and Pangpang chimed in unison.
Before they knew it, the dark-skinned figure was already in front of them.
"Come here, let Uncle Mu give you a hug! I’ve missed you all!"
The three kids' eyes nearly popped out—
It really was Uncle Mu!
Dongdong gulped: "Uncle Mu, how did you get so dark?"
Pangpang: "Yeah, Uncle Mu, did you just finish scrubbing pots before coming here?"
Chenchen tilted his little head and blinked: "Maybe it’s from being out in the sun."
Uncle Mu couldn’t resist giving a loud smooch on Chenchen’s rosy little face:
"Our Chenchen is the smartest!
This is a badge of honor from helping the uncle farmers work the fields!
Do you know what a badge of honor is? It’s a symbol of praise, contribution, and honor!"
Pangpang clutched his head: "Uncle Mu, stop talking, you’re making me dizzy."
Dongdong said: "You just got tanned from working the fields, right?"
Chenchen wiped the saliva off his face with a handkerchief: "Badges aren’t given by farmers. My dad has one—it’s an honor and award for outstanding contributions."
Uncle Mu: "...Chenchen, you're no fun at all now that you can talk so well. You sound just like your strait-laced uncle. Keep talking like this and you'll have no friends, you know that, don't you?"
Hearing this, Dongdong and Pangpang exchanged glances, then each grabbed one of Chenchen’s arms and declared in unison:
"You're the one who'll have no friends! We will always be good friends with Chenchen!"
Uncle Mu: "..." Alright then, he has no friends. Happy now?
"Alright, Chenchen and Dongdong need to go home for lunch. Pangpang, you should go back with Grandma too."
Grandma, who had come to pick up Pangpang, hadn’t rushed him at all, watching their antics fondly with a kindly smile.
Only when the person picking up Chenchen and Dongdong arrived did she amble over, take Pangpang’s hand, and walk with them.
"Grandma, is Dad coming home for dinner tonight?"
Grandma nodded: "He is. He said if you’re hungry, you can eat first. He might be a little late."
Pangpang nodded: "Yeah, no matter how late, Dad always comes home."
Grandma patted Pangpang’s head: "That’s because Pangpang is waiting for him at home."
Pangpang skipped along, beaming with genuine happiness.
All this time, Li Shouwang had truly kept his promise—to the best of his ability, he gave Pangpang the best he could offer, both things and love...
