Song Chuyi followed behind Lu Wu, watching him buy several pounds of ribs and some vegetables to stew with them. In no time, the two hundred yuan was reduced to just fifty.
Lu Wu held the fifty yuan, hesitated for a moment, and then headed towards the liquor store.
After taking just two steps, he saw Song Chuyi swinging a chair leg ahead of him.
Lu Wu: ...
He held out the crumpled fifty yuan, "There's still fifty left."
Song Chuyi glanced at it, "We need to buy groceries tomorrow. Why aren't we going home now?"
Lu Wu hesitated, peering into the liquor store.
The entrance displayed many bottles of alcohol, which looked very tempting.
He swallowed hard, took another step forward, but caught sight of the swinging chair leg again. Lu Wu felt a sharp pain in his buttocks and reluctantly pulled his foot back.
He hurriedly headed home, out of sight, out of mind.
Upon returning home, Lu Wu handed the ribs and vegetables to Li Fang, instructing her to prepare a good meal for the evening.
Li Fang seemed surprised that her husband had actually bought ribs. She paused before taking them from him.
She carried the ribs and glanced at the young man standing by the door.
The young man was tall and slender, his jet-black short hair reflecting the dim light of the stairwell. His face was so handsome it didn't seem like he could be her and her husband's biological son.
Li Fang quickly averted her gaze and went to the kitchen to start cooking.
Song Chuyi stood at the door, glanced around, noticing how much cleaner the house was, and then walked in.
The Lu family's house wasn't large, only about fifty square meters, divided into two bedrooms and a living room.
The master bedroom was occupied by Lu Wu and Li Fang, while the smaller room used to be where Lu Wuqing lived.
But Lu Wuqing hadn't been back in a long time. Since he turned eighteen, he never returned and had little contact with the family.
Lu Wu had no idea what his estranged son was up to. Once, he saw two men in black following Lu Wuqing and assumed he must have gotten involved with someone powerful. He wanted nothing to do with him, let alone ask for money.
If not for seeing Lu Wuqing at the casino today, Lu Wu might have thought he was dead.
To think that guy was still alive and familiar with his own son.
Lu Wu sat on the sofa, growing angrier by the minute.
He had never suffered much in life, except for the occasional beating for gambling debts. This was the most humiliating thing he had ever experienced!
Being hit on the buttocks by his own son was too embarrassing!
Lu Wu's chest heaved as he glared fiercely at Song Chuyi sitting across from him.
"My house is not welcome to you. Eat dinner tonight and leave."
Song Chuyi twirled the chair leg in his hand, "I can go, sure."
"Give me two hundred thousand, and I'll leave."
"What!" Lu Wu jumped up, "You want two hundred thousand from me?"
"I'll pretend I never had a son like you. Get lost!"
"No," Song Chuyi waved the chair leg, "I am your biological son. You have no right to kick me out. Even if we take this to the police, I won't be afraid."
Lu Wu cursed inwardly. He had never met anyone so shameless, especially not his own son.
Most importantly, he couldn't beat him.
Damn!
Lu Wu felt a surge of anger, and when he saw Qi Fang moving slowly, he found an outlet. He swung his fist at her stomach.
Qi Fang couldn't dodge and took the blow.
After hitting her once, Lu Wu glanced at Song Chuyi.
Song Chuyi sat on the sofa, slightly tilting his head to watch the scene without intervening or saying a word.
Lu Wu sneered arrogantly and rained more punches on Qi Fang.
Qi Fang trembled in fear, crying out, "I'm sorry," "Stop."
These words, which Lu Wu had heard countless times, failed to stir any sympathy. More punches fell, and the air filled with a faint scent of blood.
At this moment, Song Chuyi stood up.
Lu Wu froze, feeling a chill run down his spine.
Song Chuyi took half a step forward, and Lu Wu spat under his breath, muttering, "Call me when dinner's ready," before retreating to his bedroom.
Song Chuyi approached Qi Fang. His slender figure cast a shadow over most of her body.
"Are you in pain?" he asked.
Qi Fang kept her head down, her body still trembling uncontrollably.
"Lu Ge, when you were beaten by Lu Wu like that before, you were also sitting where I was just now, watching, right?"
Qi Fang's body stiffened as she slowly lifted her head.
Her face bore scars, and her cheeks were sunken from being so thin, with deep eye bags beneath eyes that held a glint of resentment.
"Shouldn't you be relieved?" Song Chuyi squatted down to look Qi Fang straight in the eye. "Relieved that someone could share the punches from Lu Wu for you. But you forgot that the person sharing those punches was a child."
Qi Fang's mouth opened slightly. "Are you here for revenge?"
Song Chuyi shook his head. "Not exactly."
"I am your son, so of course I would come back home."
But Qi Fang couldn't hear him. "No, you're here for revenge."
"You're here to seek justice for him."
"You're here to get justice for him."
She repeated these words over and over, tears streaming down her face.
Song Chuyi handed her a tissue. "Lu Ge doesn't need me to seek justice for him."
"I'm just here to live in this home."
Qi Fang didn't seem to register what he said. She took the tissue and wiped her face, then shakily stood up and went to the kitchen to cook.
Qi Fang wasn't a good cook. Despite having cooked for decades, she seemed to lack any real talent, so the food she made barely passed as edible.
Song Chuyi couldn't bring himself to eat the blackened ribs, but Lu Wu, accustomed to it, picked up a rib and crunched it loudly.
Song Chuyi: ...
After dinner, Qi Fang diligently cleared the dishes while Lu Wu lounged on the sofa like a spoiled child.
As night fell, everyone went to bed. The more Lu Wu thought about it, the angrier he became, and he quietly slipped out of his bedroom. Just two steps away, he saw Song Chuyi sitting in a chair, playing with his phone.
Lu Wu: ?????
Without even looking up, Song Chuyi said, "Go back to sleep after using the restroom."
He waved the leg of the chair as he spoke.
Lu Wu: ...
He slunk off to use the restroom and then returned to his room.
An hour later, he tried again, only to see Song Chuyi once more. Before he could say anything, Lu Wu retreated to his bedroom.
After several attempts, Lu Wu finally gave up on going out that night and went to sleep.
At four in the morning, Song Chuyi put away his phone and got up to leave.
At the turn between the second and third floors, Song Chuyi smiled at Lu Wuqing.
"Master Lu, staying up late to stand guard, huh?"
