Chapter 501: Gu Yongnian, Who Says One Thing and Means Another, He Loves Deeply
by 棠棠Chapter 501: Gu Yongnian’s Contradictions—Hopelessly in Love
Song Chuyi noticed this and pulled his hand back on purpose.
Gu Yongnian's gaze followed his fingertips before finally settling in front of him.
In just an instant, Gu Yongnian figured something out and quickly averted his eyes, refocusing on the screen to continue the video conference.
Song Chuyi smirked slightly as he flipped through the book in his hands.
It was a typical self-help book, filled with qualities one supposedly needed for success.
Hmm... very inspiring, but also total bullshit.
It was hard to imagine such a book would be found in Gu Yongnian's possession.
Before arriving, Song Chuyi had already researched Gu Yongnian's background—orphaned at a young age, toughing it out in an orphanage.
At ten, he was recognized by the Gu family patriarch and taken back. One might assume he’d live in luxury, but instead, he was thrown into a snake pit.
The old patriarch, having sired many children in his youth, had a household full of half-siblings—all shady except Gu Yongnian’s parents.
The patriarch, old-fashioned and stubborn, refused to let any Gu bloodline go unclaimed.
After all, the Gu family was vast and wealthy—one more child was just another mouth to feed.
Upon returning, Gu Yongnian endured relentless bullying, his personality getting twisted over time.
At eighteen, he began fighting over the family money. It was then that the patriarch recognized his business acumen and started grooming him.
By twenty-two, Gu Yongnian took over the Gu Group—but instead of expanding it as expected, he resigned within a month and founded his own company, directly rivaling the Gu Group.
The patriarch was furious, swearing to destroy Chusheng Group.
Yet, in the end, it was the Gu Group that collapsed. The patriarch died resentful, the family business bankrupted, and the entire Gu family scattered—now nowhere to be found in Jing City.
Meanwhile, Chusheng Group rose to national prominence in just five years.
Gu Yongnian’s name became entirely detached from the Gu Group, becoming his own success story.
After learning all this, Song Chuyi wanted to crack open Gu Yongnian’s head to see what went on inside.
In reality, his life hadn’t been this tragic—yet in this fantasy world, he’d made up such a tragic past for himself.
And to Gu Yongnian, these were real experiences.
The thought of little Gu Yongnian curled up helplessly in an orphanage corner, waiting for mealtime, made Song Chuyi’s chest tighten.
This idiot—putting himself through hell while ensuring Song Chuyi lived in comfort.
Even in a fantasy, Gu Yongnian couldn’t bear to let him suffer.
As the spoiled brat of the Song Group, Song Chuyi had never had it rough.
Raised in love, no drama in his life, he naturally inherited the Song Group—and under his leadership, he made it thrive.
The only hiccup was probably this current fight over development rights.
At this thought, Song Chuyi glanced at Gu Yongnian, only to unexpectedly meet a pair of jet-black eyes.
Song Chuyi paused briefly before instinctively speaking.
"Is the meeting over?"
Gu Yongnian withdrew his gaze and replied flatly, "Mm."
Song Chuyi gave a soft laugh. "Does Boss Gu have any instructions for me?"
"Coffee," Gu Yongnian curtly responded.
Song Chuyi stood up, said with a smile, "Sure."
He turned and walked out, asking an assistant what kind of coffee Gu Yongnian usually drank. Upon learning that he didn’t drink coffee at all, Song Chuyi gave a quiet chuckle.
"Seems Boss Gu really likes me."
Wanting coffee just because he saw him—Isn't that a form of liking someone?
The real assistant standing by: ???
Huh?
Oblivious to what the assistant was thinking, Song Chuyi waved his hand and headed to the break room to grind the coffee.
He had ground it himself—he was certain Gu Yongnian wouldn’t refuse it.
Half an hour later, Song Chuyi casually brought the freshly brewed coffee to Gu Yongnian.
"Boss Gu, your coffee."
Gu Yongnian glanced at the steaming cup and acknowledged with another noncommittal hum before continuing to work on the documents in his hands.
Song Chuyi sat nearby and, seeing that he hadn’t touched it, spoke up.
"Boss Gu, aren't you going to taste it?"
"Hearing this, Gu Yongnian finally lifted the mug. But instead of drinking, he suddenly asked, "You make this often?"
Song Chuyi waved a hand. "Not really. Coffee's way too bitter—I prefer sweet milk tea."
Even though he was literally a coffee tree, since when do coffee trees like coffee?
He loved the sweet milk tea humans made, especially with chewy tapioca pearls.
Mm… now he wanted some.
Song Chuyi picked up his phone to order himself a cup of milk tea. Across from him, Gu Yongnian squinted slightly and asked, feigning nonchalance, "Do you often make it for others?"
Without looking up, Song Chuyi replied absently, "Nope."
"Just you."
Only then did Gu Yongnian appear pleased, taking a small sip of the bitter coffee.
The harsh bitterness coated his tongue—the raw coffee beans offered not a hint of sweetness.
His Adam's apple bobbed as Gu Yongnian swallowed the bitter taste.
Meanwhile, Song Chuyi had already ordered his milk tea. He looked up at Gu Yongnian, who was still holding the cup without drinking, and smiled.
"Mr. Gu, you're not afraid to drink that, are you? Afraid I poisoned it?"
"No," Gu Yongnian replied, without changing expression. "You wouldn’t do something like that."
After speaking, he took a sip right in front of him.
The bitterness filled his mouth, yet he didn’t even furrow his brows, remaining so composed that Song Chuyi began to wonder if he’d lost his sense of taste.
Song Chuyi gave him a look before tentatively asking, "Is it good?"
"Hm," Gu Yongnian responded with just that single sound, then set the cup down and returned to his work.
Song Chuyi glanced at the still mostly full cup of coffee and nodded to himself in understanding.
This thought flickered through his mind before he lowered his head to check how much longer his milk tea would take.
Maybe because it was afternoon tea time, the delivery guy was moving very slowly.
He watched as the courier moved slowly on his little e-bike on the map, taking forever to finally get closer.
Song Chuyi sighed in relief, ready to head downstairs to grab his milk tea, when he looked up and realized the previously half-full cup of coffee was now completely empty.
Only the dark remnants at the bottom proved that the cup had held anything at all.
Song Chuyi: ???
Huh? Wait, did he actually finish it?
Well, Mr. Gu probably won’t be sleeping tonight then.
