Wenren Shu responded lightly with a soft "Mm-hm."
He slowly opened his palm. The petals, now wrinkled, had lost their original plumpness and freshness.
Fortunately, there were plenty of experts who could identify the flower even from these withered petals.
Gong Ji ordered this matter, and before long, news came back.
As the emperor, Gong Ji handled these matters with great ease.
As for Wenren Shu, after resolving the "plague," he returned to the National Preceptor’s residence.
His residence was situated to the east of the palace, sprawling over a vast area.
However, Wenren Shu enjoyed solitude, so there were only about ten palace maids and eunuchs attending to him.
Wenren Shu returned to the courtyard, where dinner was already set out on a stone table.
The meal was simple, consisting of only three dishes.
One bowl of pumpkin porridge, a plate of stir-fried seasonal vegetables, and a small dish of osmanthus pastries.
The osmanthus pastries had a faint transparent color and bounced back when poked with chopsticks.
They looked absolutely delectable.
In the flowers, Song Chuyi’s stomach rumbled.
He had spent the day drinking water but hadn’t eaten a thing, so he was hungry by now.
Song Chuyi used a grass belt he had woven to tie the flower petals around his waist, securing it tightly.
He made sure that even a strong breeze wouldn’t expose him. Then, he flapped his small wings and flew up.
The flapping sound echoed in the quiet courtyard.
Wenren Shu’s hand holding the spoon paused.
Before long, a soft, sweet voice called out.
"Brother Wenren, can I have dinner with you?"
Wenren Shu’s eyes lowered slightly, and he saw the little figure standing next to the osmanthus pastries, as tall as the cakes.
The little figure had an extra green grass band around his waist compared to earlier in the day.
It was very thin, as if carefully selected.
Seeing that Wenren Shu wasn’t responding, Song Chuyi bit into the osmanthus pastry in front of him.
"If you don’t object, I’ll take that as a yes," he mumbled with his mouth full.
Wenren Shu didn’t say anything and picked up the wooden spoon again, drinking his pumpkin porridge.
The pumpkin porridge was soon finished.
He reached for a piece of osmanthus cake.
It just so happened to be the one Song Chuyi was munching on.
Song Chuyi didn’t react fast enough, and he and the cake went flying together.
"Hold on!" Song Chuyi quickly let go of the cake and fluttered his little wings. "You can’t eat the one I’ve already been munching on!"
Wenren, without batting an eye, ate the osmanthus cake that Song Chuyi had taken a bite out of.
The cake was soft, chewy, and just sweet enough.
Noticing Wenren wasn’t paying him any mind, Song Chuyi flew to another piece of osmanthus cake, this time using both his hands and feet to hug it.
He lowered his head and started eating.
He chomped down with all his might, munching away!
Piece by piece, the osmanthus cakes vanished from the plate, and soon only the one Song Chuyi was holding was left.
Wenren reached out, his fingertips touching the edge of the osmanthus cake.
Song Chuyi: !!!
"No!" he said loudly. "This one is mine, mine!"
Wenren pinched the piece of osmanthus cake.
When Song Chuyi saw that being tough didn’t work, he burst into tears.
"Waaah, Big Brother Wenren is so mean. You said you’d have dinner with me."
"And now you’re trying to take my osmanthus cake."
He couldn’t bear this injustice.
He hadn’t eaten anything all day, and now the antagonist was trying to snatch his last piece of osmanthus cake!
That’s way too much!
Perhaps because Song Chuyi was crying so miserably, Wenren paused, put down the cake, and withdrew his hand.
He looked at the little one who was crying so hard he could barely catch his breath but was still going "nom, nom, nom."
Wenren frowned, realizing this delusion was getting out of hand.
Seeing that Wenren wasn’t grabbing the osmanthus cake anymore, Song Chuyi immediately cheered up.
"Big Brother Wenren, you’re the best."
"Love you, big heart~"
He made a heart gesture and continued eating the sweet osmanthus cake.
No wonder these are palace desserts, they’re so delicious!
Song Chuyi ate the osmanthus cake clean, his little belly slightly bulging, clearly full.
He sprawled out on the stone table, completely unconcerned about looking presentable.
"Delicious!"
He licked his lips, looking at Wenren Shu eagerly.
"Will we have this for breakfast tomorrow as well?"
Wenren Shu put away the dish and got up to head outside.
Song Chuyi wanted to follow him, but then he remembered that there were too many people outside. If he was seen by someone, someone would surely capture him.
If he was captured, he would not be able to see Wenren Shu again!
So before he completed his task and returned to his normal form, he absolutely wouldn't step out of this yard!
Song Chuyi slumped on the stone table, feeling his stomach was really full. After thinking for a moment, he flew up.
He fluttered in the air to digest the food, his transparent little wings tracing graceful arcs in the air.
When Wenren Shu returned from outside, this was the scene he saw.
The lively little one danced in the air, bathed in the gentle glow of the moonlight.
Cute and beautiful, full of vitality.
Wenren Shu sat back down on the stone chair and poured himself a cup of tea.
The steam slowly rose, creating a mist.
Song Chuyi, feeling a bit thirsty from digesting the food, flew to the teacup and lowered his head to gulp it down.
After drinking his fill, he looked up at Wenren Shu and gave a sweet, soft smile.
"Thank you, Brother Wenren."
Wenren Shu picked up the teacup and took a sip of the tea.
Warm, slightly bitter.
"Song Chuyi," he suddenly said, "Did you give yourself that name?"
Song Chuyi nodded eagerly, "Yes, yes."
Wenren Shu gave a faint response and didn't ask further.
But Song Chuyi was someone who couldn't stay idle.
He started chatting.
"You humans celebrate the Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, right?"
"After the New Year's Eve, it's the first day of the lunar month, and the first day is the beginning of the year."
"Every first day of the lunar month is a new beginning for you."
He sat on the handle of the teapot, swinging his little feet.
"What do you think of the name I gave myself?"
Wenren Shu took a sip of the warm tea. "And the surname?" he asked.
Song Chuyi tilted his head and thought for a moment, "I don’t quite remember."
"Maybe I just liked how the name 'Song' sounded."
Some memories felt too distant for him to recall.
But he did choose his own name.
"Hmm." Wen Renshu murmured in response but didn’t say anything more.
The moonlight poured down, enveloping the two of them.
Anyone who saw this would have found it peaceful and beautiful.
Unfortunately, this courtyard was off-limits to everyone in the National Preceptor’s residence.
Not even a mosquito could fly in.
As the night deepened, the tea had grown cold.
Wen Renshu stood up and went back to his room to rest.
Bored, Song Chuyi started manually pollinating the flowers in the garden.
In the bedroom, Wen Renshu closed his eyes, but sleep eluded him no matter how hard he tried.
A mist started to rise, carrying a faint chill.
He slipped on his robe and stepped into the courtyard.
There, he saw the little one standing under a large leaf, completely naked.
The little one was happily singing.
"I love taking baths, my skin feels so good~"
"Aoaoao~"
Wen Renshu: ……
