Song Chuyi rolled his eyes irritably, "What do you think?"
"Let’s see if it hurts when you chip your teeth."
As he spoke, he rubbed his cheek.
"What did you eat growing up? How are you so tough?"
His eyes shifted. "Did Hong Qi spend all the gold and silver he stole on feeding you big fish and meat?"
Liu Wenshan shook his head and knelt down in front of him again.
Song Chuyi blinked, this time refraining from pouncing forward and instead leaning back against the tree trunk, slightly lowering his head.
"I don’t need you to carry me on your back."
"I can walk by myself."
Liu Wenshan glanced back at him, as if understanding his resolve, and said nothing, just silently stood up and stood by his side.
Song Chuyi hesitated...
He nudged his calf with his foot, "Aren’t you going to put in more effort?"
Liu Wenshan paused for a moment, then extended his large hand and took his hand.
Song Chuyi’s lips twitched.
"Does holding hands count as trying?"
He tsked softly, "I think you’re really a fool."
He leaned forward, his right arm naturally wrapping around Liu Wenshan's neck.
His expression was haughty and willful. "Take me back in your arms."
He hadn’t asked to be carried on Liu Wenshan’s back, so it didn’t count as breaking his word.
Liu Wenshan bent slightly, slipping his left arm under Song Chuyi’s knees, and lifted him up.
Song Chuyi let out a lazy yawn, resting his head against Liu Wenshan’s chest, listening to the steady and strong heartbeat, and gently closed his eyes.
Liu Wenshan glanced down, assuming he was asleep, and softened his footsteps.
If you looked closely, his feet barely grazed the ground.
It wasn’t walking so much as gliding with masterful qinggong (a form of light-footed martial arts).
Song Chuyi wasn’t really asleep—he couldn’t possibly have dozed off.
He’d only closed his eyes to see how Liu Wenshan would react once he thought he was asleep.
This man was too restrained—even with him 'asleep,' he didn’t dare steal a kiss.
In any other world, he’d have kissed him already. But here, he just dutifully carried him back to the mountain stronghold.
The chilly night breeze swept through him, sending a slight shiver down his spine.
He shivered slightly and burrowed deeper into Liu Wenshan's embrace.
Before long, Song Chuyi felt Liu Wenshan's body warming up.
No, it seemed he had found a way to warm himself up.
This warmth also seeped into Song Chuyi's body, making him feel a bit more comfortable.
Song Chuyi quietly opened his eyes and saw Liu Wenshan looking straight ahead, still intent on their path.
They had already entered the narrow path.
Because the path was so narrow, Liu Wenshan had to hunch slightly to pass through.
But Song Chuyi, cradled in his arms, felt no discomfort despite the narrow path.
Liu Wenshan was keeping him safe.
At this realization, Song Chuyi's lips curled into a slight smile, and he closed his eyes again.
After passing through the narrow path, the path began to open up.
It was at this moment that Song Chuyi feigned waking up, yawned, and gently opened his eyes.
"Hey, are we almost there?"
He leaned on one hand on Liu Wenshan's chest and patted it.
"Put me down."
Liu Wenshan complied and set him down.
Song Chuyi stepped onto the ground and even hopped a few times.
"What happened today can't be shared with anyone else, understand?"
He warned, clenching his teeth, "If anyone other than us finds out..."
He raised his fist in a threatening gesture.
"I'll beat you up!"
Liu Wenshan looked at the clenched fist, and a flicker of amusement appeared in his eyes.
Satisfied, Song Chuyi lowered his fist.
"Let's go back."
He turned and walked towards the stronghold, with Liu Wenshan silently trailing behind him like a shadow.
When they arrived back at the stronghold, it was already midnight. Almost everyone was asleep, including Hong Qi, who had retired to his room.
The two of them slipped back unnoticed.
Song Chuyi went straight back to his main room, tidied up briefly, and, finding himself unable to sleep, went out again.
Liu Wenshan had probably gone to sleep as well, and the entire stronghold was eerily quiet.
For once, Song Chuyi's conscience kicked in, and he didn't go looking for Liu Wenshan. Instead, he made his way to the back mountain by himself.
"Since I can't sleep, might as well catch a wild boar for a meal."
He muttered to himself as he searched for signs of wild boars.
The back mountain was huge, with lots of wild boars, pheasants, and ducks.
He’d spotted plenty of small animals when he went pear-picking the other day.
The thought made him even more confused.
With so much game in the back mountain, why were the folks in the stronghold so skinny, and why was there hardly any meat in the kitchen?
He’d even snuck a peek at Hong Qi’s meals—mostly veggies and tiny portions.
For a grown man, a bowl of rice and a plate of greens just wasn’t enough.
As Song Chuyi thought it over, he spotted a wild boar drinking by the stream.
He smirked and was about to pounce when Liu Wenshan popped up out of nowhere, heading straight for the boar.
The boar noticed him but didn’t bolt, just kept drinking.
Liu Wenshan stood still, not making a move.
Song Chuyi was baffled: ???
Did Liu Wenshan and this boar make some kind of pact?
When the boar finished drinking and started to leave, Song Chuyi panicked and yelled, "Grab it!"
The boar took off in a flash, but Liu Wenshan was quicker, snatching its head and delivering a sharp strike that knocked it out cold.
Song Chuyi sighed in relief and stepped out from behind the tree.
"Nice moves," he said, walking over to the boar and giving it a once-over.
He crouched down and gave the boar’s rump a pat.
"It’s so plump, it’s gotta be tasty."
Liu Wenshan’s brow furrowed slightly.
"We can’t eat it."
Song Chuyi looked up, puzzled. "Why not?"
"Do you have wildlife protection laws here?" He’d never heard of anything like that in ancient times.
Liu Wenshan looked confused, clearly not getting Song Chuyi’s last remark.
Instead, he crouched down, grabbed the boar’s tail, and pointed to a faint golden mark on its rear.
"It’s got a royal mark. We can’t eat it."
Song Chuyi blinked. "You’re saying this boar’s been tagged by the royals?"
"Is this their stuff, so we can't eat it?"
Before Liu Wenshan could even respond, Song Chuyi slapped the wild boar's butt.
"They won’t even notice if we eat one."
"Do you think they’d actually come to the village to check?"
"No way, I’m eating this wild boar."
Liu Wenshan put down the boar's tail, a glint of amusement in his eyes.
"Alright."
He agreed.
Song Chuyi finally felt satisfied. "You know how to butcher a wild boar, right? I want to eat roasted pork belly."
As he spoke, he stood up. "I’ll grab some seasonings, you take care of this here."
Not long after Song Chuyi left, a man in black stepped out of the shadows.
Watching Liu Wenshan actually butchering the wild boar, he laughed. "You’re actually going to kill it?"
Liu Wenshan nodded, draining the boar’s blood, his tone serious.
"He’s craving it..."
He said simply.
