Chapter 12 Who Said Our Family Has No Maid?

Xingxing was awakened by Wei Pozi's startled cry outside the door.

"What happened to the thing I left on the windowsill?!"

Wei Pozi's shout brought Li Chunhua from the main house and Bai Xiaofeng with Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er from the second house. They hurried out of their rooms to see what was going on.

Li Chunhua had a loud voice: "Mother, what's wrong?"

Wei Pozi's brows were furrowed so deeply they could crush a fly. She stood outside the main house window, searching the ground near the windowsill. Seeing Li Chunhua and Bai Xiaofeng come out, her frown deepened as she asked them, "Did you touch the thing I left on the windowsill?"

Li Chunhua was still trying to figure out what Wei Pozi meant, but Bai Xiaofeng immediately responded, "Mother, you've always told us not to touch anything in the main house. I would never dare to do that."

Li Chunhua quickly nodded in agreement: "Yes, yes, I wouldn't dare either."

With both daughters-in-law saying this, Wei Pozi looked at her two grandsons.

The two boys from the main house were still in the mountains and hadn't returned, leaving only Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er from the second house.

Bai Xiaofeng quickly added, "Mother, these two just came back from digging for wild vegetables and were helping me sort threads inside. They just came out now."

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er nodded and said, "Grandma, we didn't touch anything."

Wei Pozi frowned deeply, remaining silent.

Bai Xiaofeng eagerly asked, "Mother, what was it? Could it have been blown away by the wind? We can help you look for it."

Wei Pozi gave Bai Xiaofeng an annoyed glance.

She had carefully placed a tile on the heartburn grass at its stem!

Besides, there was no wind today!

Li Chunhua, not wanting to be left behind, quickly nodded in agreement: "Yes, Mother, what was it? Tell us, and we'll search the house for it."

Wei Pozi was very agitated and continued searching without paying much attention to the two daughters-in-law.

Outside in the courtyard, Su Rouer, from the third house, initially did not want to leave her room and stood by the windowsill, listening.

Last time, she had a disagreement with her mother-in-law, and her husband couldn't help but scold her and Ju Ge'er when he came back for dinner. Su Rouer felt hurt and had been avoiding everyone except during meals.

Hearing the commotion in the courtyard, Su Rouer hesitated but decided to go out and deal with it.

As she turned around, she noticed Ju Ge'er, who was playing with wooden figurines on the bed, looking distracted and uneasy.

A mother knows her child best, and Su Rouer's heart sank. She cautiously asked, "Ju Ge'er, do you know about this?"

Ju Ge'er, prompted by his mother's question, hesitantly admitted, "Mother, I saw Grandma drying a plant on the windowsill today and threw it into the chicken coop."

Hearing this, Su Rouer felt relieved. It was just a plant; what was the big deal? Her son had thrown it away.

But then she thought that since her mother-in-law was making such a fuss, even if it was just a plant, it must have some significance.

Ju Ge'er, sensing that this might not be a small matter, hesitantly suggested, "Mother, should I go tell Grandma?"

Su Rouer grabbed her son, "Don't go out. I know what to do. Remember, you didn't touch anything on Grandma's windowsill, understood?"

Ju Ge'er was still confused, and Su Rouer tapped his forehead, urging him, "Just listen to me! Do you understand?"

Ju Ge'er pouted and brushed off his mother's hand, impatiently saying, "Okay, I got it!"

    ...

Wei Pozi was still agitated, and Li Chunhua and Bai Xiaofeng, as daughters-in-law, dared not say much more.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er exchanged glances, unsure of what to do.

Xingxing climbed down from the bed, sat on a small stool, and put on her shoes before coming out of the room, still half-asleep: "Grandma, what's wrong?"

Wei Pozi sighed and patted Xingxing's head, "Nothing, just something I left on the windowsill is missing."

Su Rouer lifted the curtain, pretending to have just heard the commotion, and came out concerned: "Mother, I heard you lost something. How is it going?"

Wei Pozi glanced at Su Rouer, neither warmly nor coldly: "Nothing, haven't found it yet."

Su Rouer walked to the windowsill and exclaimed, "Ah!" as if remembering something, looking at Xingxing, "Could it be that Xingxing opened the window in the main house and blew it away?"

This was a plausible guess, and Li Chunhua and Bai Xiaofeng couldn't help but sneak a look at Wei Pozi's face.

    Wei Pozi frowned.

Xingxing was confused and scratched her head, defending herself softly, "But Xingxing didn't open the window."

Su Rouer immediately said, "Xingxing, little kids shouldn't lie. Look how worried Grandma is! Grandma loves you so much, you shouldn't lie to her. If you opened the window, it's okay, you didn't mean to."

Xingxing became upset, "Xingxing didn't lie. Xingxing and Third Brother and Fourth Brother went digging for wild vegetables and then slept. I didn't open the window!"

Su Rouer chuckled, "I heard Second Sister-in-Law say that Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er were called inside to sort threads right after they came back. You were alone in the main house. If you didn't open the window, who else could it be? Little liar."

Xingxing was at a loss, tears welling up in her eyes, "Xingxing, Xingxing really didn't." She looked at Wei Pozi through her teary eyes, "Grandma, Xingxing is not a little liar."

Wei Pozi's heart ached, and she hugged Xingxing, comforting her, "Grandma believes you, Xingxing. Don't cry."

Then she turned to Su Rouer and scolded her, "How can you be like this as an aunt! Accusing the child without knowing the facts!"

Su Rouer pouted, "But she was the only one in the main house."

Wei Pozi was thoroughly annoyed and snapped, "Just shut up already!"

Su Rouer responded with an "Oh" and fell silent.

At that moment, there was a commotion outside the Yu family's wood gate. Someone called out loudly, "Uncle Yu, Aunt Wei, are you at home?"

Wei Pozi shouted back, "We're here. The door is open; just come on in."

Soon after, Luo's father walked in, carrying a chicken.

A few villagers who had come to watch the scene followed behind Luo's father, teasing, "Why are you bringing such a heavy gift to the Yu family, Brother Luo? If we didn't know that the Yu family only has boys, we'd think you were here to propose a marriage for your ox!"

Wei Pozi instinctively retorted, "Who said we don't have a girl?" She hugged Xingxing in her arms, "This is our little girl!"

Xingxing was not even four years old, so it was impossible for this Luo to be proposing a marriage. But Wei Pozi didn't want others to say in front of Xingxing that they had no girls in their family.

Their Yu family had the best little girl in the world!

The news that the Yu family had adopted a little girl during this great famine had already spread throughout Nantuo Village two days ago.

Many people didn't say anything to their faces, but behind their backs, they laughed at the Yu family, wondering if they were crazy for taking in another mouth to feed when they could barely support their own.
