Chapter 401: A Piece of Milk Cake

An Ningxin sighed almost imperceptibly and finally said, "Cheng Jie, come over here."

An Cheng was taken aback when An Ningxin called her. Her dark eyes lit up.

She answered with a mix of nervousness and joy, "Yes," and shuffled over, standing rigidly in front of the couch, visibly uneasy.

Fan Pingfang didn't know An Cheng's background, but she felt that the little girl was quite pitiful. An Ningxin didn't seem to favor boys over girls, so why had the little girl been raised like this?

Unbeknownst to her, An Cheng was conceived when the Earl of Qin'an rescued An Ningxin from the mountain stronghold's dungeon. When An Ningxin realized she was pregnant, it was too late. She took three doses of abortion medicine, but none were effective, and she almost died. The doctor insisted that giving birth was the only way to save her life.

Despite this, An Ningxin took another dose and nearly died again. The Earl of Qin'an persuaded her to keep the baby, and An Cheng was born.

An Ningxin's past haunted her whenever she saw An Cheng. She could only ignore her, acting as if she didn't exist.

After leaving the Earl of Qin'an, An Ningxin's feelings toward An Cheng remained complicated, and she struggled to face her.

But seeing An Cheng's awkward stance compared to the other children sitting calmly on the couch, An Ningxin felt a twinge of sadness.

An Ningxin stiffly handed a piece of milk cake to An Cheng.

An Cheng looked at An Ningxin in disbelief, her eyes shining with joy.

She carefully took the cake and stammered, "Th-thank you."

    She then thanked Fan Pingfang.

    She also thanked Xingxing.

Her cautious behavior made the adults uncomfortable.

As a mother, Fan Pingfang felt it more acutely.

The sweet little girl thanked her mother so nervously for a piece of cake...

Fan Pingfang resolved to discuss it with An Ningxin later.

Li Chunhua's milk cake was a hit with the children.

Xu Ge'er and Master Hao devoured two pieces quickly.

Reluctantly, Xu Ge'er pulled back his hand.

He had to obey Xingxing or risk missing out on future outings.

Ling Jier, being younger, ate slowly, which was normal. But when Xingxing looked over, she noticed that the five-year-old An Cheng was nibbling very slowly on her small piece of milk cake.

At first, Xingxing thought An Cheng was savoring it, but then her eyes fell on An Cheng's neck, and she froze.

An Cheng's neck had started to turn red.

The whites of her dark eyes were also becoming bloodshot—

Xingxing's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly stepped forward to stop An Cheng from eating any more of the milk cake.

    "Stop eating!" Xingxing urged.

Sis Cheng still stuffed the last piece into her mouth, now struggling to swallow, looking as if she was choking, yet she shook her head at Xingxing, gasping, "I'm... okay..."

An Ningxin was also startled, sitting up abruptly.

This didn’t look okay at all!

Xingxing didn’t hesitate, directly reaching into Sis Cheng’s mouth to dig out the dairy cake.

Being so close, she was certain—Sis Cheng was allergic!

Sis Cheng was allergic to dairy!

Her little face was now flushed red, tears in her eyes from the discomfort, her body shaking, clearly starting to have difficulty breathing!

Xingxing quickly searched her bag, found a packet of powder, then hurriedly told the maid to get water to mix the powder in.

"Here, drink this," Xingxing handed the cup of medicine water to Sis Cheng, but she couldn’t breathe, her whole body shaking, obviously unable to drink it.

An Ningxin was terrified: "Sis Cheng! Are you okay?"

Xingxing acted quickly, telling those around her, "Quick, make her drink this!"

The maid and the Pozi hurried over, one holding her, the other helping her drink.

Fortunately, the medicine in Xingxing’s pouch was good for emergencies, and after the packet of powder was consumed, in no time, Sis Cheng’s condition got much better.

The redness on her neck and cheeks faded a lot, and her breathing became much smoother.

Even though it was winter, Xingxing was sweating a lot.

Allergies are no small matter, especially for children with weak immune systems; many children have died because of this.

Sis Cheng had survived this ordeal.

Not only was Xingxing sweating, but Fan Pingfang was also drenched in sweat from fright.

An Ningxin, who was still weak from illness, was even more so, breaking out in a cold sweat.

Sis Cheng sat limply on the bed, not daring to look at An Ningxin’s face.

Fan Pingfang couldn’t help but say to An Ningxin, "...An Ningxin, don’t blame me for speaking out of turn, even though Sis Cheng is a girl, she’s still your child, how could you, as her mother, not know that she can’t consume dairy?"

An Ningxin’s face turned even paler.

    She... truly didn’t know.

Sis Cheng suddenly spoke up anxiously, "Auntie, no, it’s not my mother’s fault... it’s, it’s me who didn’t say..."

Fan Pingfang couldn’t help but tighten her face, poking Sis Cheng’s little arm, "You’re still defending your mother? And you? Do you know you can’t have dairy?"

Sis Cheng became even more anxious and uneasy, her little hands twisting in front of her, her head hanging low, softly saying, "Once I secretly took a sip of my brother’s milk, I almost died... I, I know I can’t have dairy, but, but my mother really didn’t know. I, I was thinking, the cake was given to me by my mother... it’s not her fault, it’s, it’s me being too greedy..."

    Sis Cheng’s voice grew softer.

Her mother gave her cake! Even though it was dairy cake that she couldn’t eat, she was still so, so happy, reluctant to eat it all, nibbling it bit by bit...

Hearing Sis Cheng’s timid defense, An Ningxin felt as if she had been struck, her whole body trembling slightly.
