Chapter 194: Just as Adorable as Ah Wu Was When She Was Little
by 小辫子Chapter 194: Just as Adorable as Ah Wu Was When She Was Little
Old Mao smiled and said, "It sounds like this Yu family is quite interesting. They haggle over every penny with the cloth shop owner, yet they buy fabric for the maids that’s almost the same quality as their own. It’s hard to tell if they’re really into saving money or not."
Grandfather Liu grunted but didn’t say anything else, simply telling the man, "Keep watching."
The man nodded and left the carriage.
As for Wei Pozi, after getting a good deal from the cloth shop owner, she finally nodded and pulled out a silver ingot from her pouch to pay.
The cloth shop owner was both amused and exasperated, sighing repeatedly, "Old sister, every time you come, I practically give you rock-bottom prices."
"Don’t kid yourself, I know you better than that," Wei Pozi smiled. "You’re still making a good profit off me, so don’t act like you’re losing money — just pack everything and deliver it to my house later."
The cloth shop owner hurriedly agreed.
Previously, when Yu Sanbao was dealing in cloth, he had dealt with this shop owner many times. Wei Pozi had reviewed the account books and was well aware of the cost and selling prices of these fabrics.
Now, although the Yujia Commercial Store wasn’t very large, it had ample space for storing cloth. However, the profits from selling cloth weren’t as high as from other small items. Yu Sanbao figured it wasn’t worth focusing on selling cloth in the store anymore, occasionally bringing back some cloth which ended up benefiting the shop owner.
After finishing her cloth purchase, Wei Pozi felt much more at ease and planned to take Xingxing to a bookstore next.
Recently, Xingxing had been making frequent trips to the county town and had been diligently asking her brothers to teach her characters. Her hard work paid off, and she had learned many characters.
When Xingxing showed a page of her writing to Wei Pozi, it moved her so much that tears almost came to her eyes.
Wei Pozi herself couldn’t read many characters; Yu Sanbao had only taught her a few commonly used in account books, which she barely recognized, let alone wrote.
Seeing that her granddaughter, at only four years old, could already recognize so many characters, how could she not be excited?
Wei Pozi even thought that if women were allowed to take imperial exams, her dear Xingxing would definitely bring her a top scholar title!
Therefore, after finishing their cloth purchase, Wei Pozi decided to take Xingxing to a bookstore to pick out some picture books that Xingxing liked.
Wei Pozi instructed Shuang He to return to the store while she took Xingxing’s hand and headed towards the bookstore.
Mapo County wasn’t large, and there weren’t many bookstores in the county.
However, books were always considered precious items, and places that sold them were usually arranged quite elegantly.
Wei Pozi felt a little intimidated as she stepped inside.
Her voice even lowered a few decibels.
"Xingxing, look, which ones do you like? Grandma will buy them for you," Wei Pozi whispered, not wanting to disturb the quiet atmosphere.
Influenced by Wei Pozi, Xingxing even nodded slightly, afraid of disturbing others.
Xingxing tiptoed forward and only picked a picture book.
— This picture book wasn’t thick, but because it was mostly filled with printed illustrations, it was more expensive than regular books.
Xingxing had seen her family worry about money and wasn’t the type to be unaware of financial difficulties.
"Grandma, I want this one!" Xingxing raised the picture book in her hand, her smile sweet.
Wei Pozi didn’t even ask the price and directly said, "Alright."
After a pause, Wei Pozi couldn’t help but ask Xingxing, "Is one book enough for now? Would you like to pick out another one?"
Xingxing nodded her little head, "One is enough! It will last a long time! I'll take it back to read with Ju Geer... and when Bang Geer grows up, he can read it too!"
Wei Pozi couldn't help but rub Xingxing's little head.
The grandmother and granddaughter left the bookstore. Though Wei Pozi was a rural farmer, she held books in high regard. Even the children's books her granddaughter read were treated as treasures.
Back at home, Wei Pozi pulled out a piece of cloth from her blouse and tenderly wrapped the small book.
In the carriage parked on the street, Grandfather Liu peeked through the carriage curtain, observing the scene, and squinted thoughtfully.
Old Mao remarked, "Grandfather Liu, though the Yujia are from the countryside, they’re far from uncivilized. They hold books in high esteem... I've heard the Yujia has four school-age children, all sent to study in a private school. For a rural family, that's quite an achievement."
Grandfather Liu said nothing, but his approving nod spoke volumes.
As a former Grand Scholar, he found it highly commendable that a farming family valued education and strived for improvement.
Soon after, Wei Pozi took Xingxing to buy some treats.
Old Mao remarked again, "This grandmother is quite indulgent with her granddaughter..."
He couldn't help but glance at Grandfather Liu.
This time, Grandfather Liu finally spoke up, "...Her little granddaughter reminds me of how cute Ah Wu was when she was young."
Perhaps it was because of this "just as adorable" that Grandfather Liu had the carriage follow them for a while, and finally couldn't resist, got out of the carriage and feigned asking for directions at a tea stall.
Wei Pozi and Xingxing didn't suspect anything, thinking he was just an ordinary wealthy old gentleman. They were very enthusiastic in showing him the way.
Grandfather Liu looked puzzled, "...How do I get there?"
Xingxing whispered to Wei Pozi, "Grandma, this old grandpa looks even older than our grandpa. Shouldn’t we help him get there?"
Wei Pozi had the same thought. Since they had nothing else to do, they decided to help him all the way.
Grandfather Liu froze at the comment about being "even older than Grandpa."
Old Mao behind him almost burst into laughter.
Xingxing and Wei Pozi warmly escorted Grandfather Liu and Old Mao to a restaurant.
This was the address Grandfather Liu casually mentioned.
Grandfather Liu expressed his gratitude. Wei Pozi waved her hand dismissively, "It's nothing really. This Mapo County is only so big, it's just a few steps."
She then directly took Xingxing's hand and left.
They didn’t seem to care about his wealth at all.
Grandfather Liu and Old Mao went up to a private room on the second floor of the restaurant, where they could still see the figures of Wei Pozi and Xingxing holding hands as they walked down the long street into the distance.
Old Mao sighed, "This old lady should be the head of the Yujia family. After this interaction, she seems to be a very sincere and warm-hearted person."
Grandfather Liu neither agreed nor disagreed.
After ordering a pot of tea and sipping it lightly, Grandfather Liu suddenly said, "...Ah Wu has been in Mapo County for a long time, and our home has not once opened its doors to guests. I remember your grandson is attending the county school now? He calls me a godfather, so it would be appropriate to invite some of his peers to study together at home."
Old Mao roughly understood Grandfather Liu's intention.
The implication was to hold a gathering and have his grandson invite the Yujia children to the Liu family villa for a study session.
