    Chapter 241: Marriage and Betrothal

Grandfather Liu opened the conversation with Wei Pozi directly. "I was wondering if you're free at the moment? I have some matters I'd like to discuss with you."

Wei Pozi was indeed free. She hurriedly went to call Yu Laotou, and the couple quickly led Grandfather Liu and Old Mao back to their home.

At home, Bai Xiaofeng had already boiled water and found a set of clean tea utensils. She had retrieved some good tea leaves that Yu Sanbao had brought back—tea that the family had been reluctant to drink. She brewed a pot of it.

Wei Pozi gave Bai Xiaofeng an approving look.

The elderly couple felt a bit awkward as they invited Grandfather Liu to sit in the honored seat. "Our home is small, so please don't mind our modest home, Scholar."

Wei Pozi poured a cup of the brewed tea for Grandfather Liu. "We are just a farming family and don't have anything special. We've never drunk good tea, so I hope this tea is to your liking..."

Grandfather Liu waved his hand affably. "Everything is fine."

He smiled, picked up the teacup, and took a sip. "I was just feeling a bit thirsty."

Seeing that Grandfather Liu's expression showed no sign of disdain, Wei Pozi finally breathed a little easier.

Grandfather Liu chuckled. "No need to be so nervous. The Liu family also started from humble beginnings and experienced hardship in the early years."

He then became more serious. "The reason I came here today is actually to discuss the marriage between my Ah Wu and your Siyang."

Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou immediately became even more nervous.

They exchanged glances, their minds racing with countless guesses.

Finally, it was Wei Pozi who spoke with difficulty. "Scholar, is there... a problem with the marriage?"

"You've misunderstood," Grandfather Liu guessed what Wei Pozi was thinking and chuckled. "Ah Wu and Siyang are both doing well, and the marriage will proceed as we agreed before... with just one exception."

Grandfather Liu lost his smile and became slightly more serious. "Just a few days ago, something happened that changed my mind a little."

Grandfather Liu coughed and looked at Old Mao.

"Actually, this whole situation was thanks to Xingxing," Old Mao stepped forward and explained to Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou what had happened a few days ago—how Ah Wu's aunt had tried to harm Ah Wu.

Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou were both stunned by the story.

A few days ago, Xingxing had brought back many jewels and, with a proud little chest, told Wei Pozi that they were for building a house. Wei Pozi was startled when she saw the jewels and hurriedly asked where they had come from.

Xingxing explained that some bad people had used sleeping smoke to try and knock out Ah Wu sister, but Xingxing had saved her. The old gentleman had given Xingxing the jewels as a thank-you.

Wei Pozi, alarmed, pressed for more details and breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Ah Wu was safe. As for the jewels, following their usual practice, Wei Pozi put them in Xingxing's small chest for safekeeping.

Only then did Wei Pozi realize that it was Ah Wu's own aunt who had tried to harm her!

    A relative!

After Old Mao finished, he sighed. "It's an unfortunate family matter, but that's what happened."

Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou exchanged glances, both stunned and at a loss for words.

Finally, seeing the grave expression on Grandfather Liu's face, Wei Pozi tried to comfort him. "Please don't be too upset. Fortunately, our Ah Wu is blessed and will naturally overcome any danger."

Grandfather Liu deeply agreed and nodded, saying in a solemn tone, "That's the gist of it. I've already sent the person back to the capital and included a letter, ordering my useless eldest son to divorce his wife. But they have already seen Ah Wu as a resource of the Liu family. While I'm still around, they dared to scheme against Ah Wu's innocence, attempting to force me to agree to Ah Wu's marriage with the Cui family. But if I were gone, and since Ah Wu is having a marriage where she stays at her family home, I can't even imagine what insane things they might do..."

As soon as Grandfather Liu thought of his eldest son and his wife, a look of frustration appeared on his face.

Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou looked horrified and couldn't say a word.

There were plenty of scandals in the countryside, but they didn’t expect that there would be just as much filth in the luxurious life!

"So, after much consideration, I believe I need to discuss this with you," Grandfather Liu sighed and said, "Whether Ah Wu and Siyang's wedding can be moved up sooner. The wedding will still be held at your place, and we won't mention it as a matrilocal marriage, but as a traditional marriage. The rest will still follow what we agreed upon earlier. The newlyweds will live with me for some time and then live with you for some time. The firstborn child will take the Liu family surname. If there are more children, they will take the Yu family surname. What do you think?"

For Wei Pozi and Yu Laotou, since they had already agreed to let Yu Siyang become a live-in son-in-law for the Liu family, how could they not agree to this proposal from Grandfather Liu?

"For our Yu family, this is a good thing. How could we not agree?" Wei Pozi said without even needing to discuss it with Yu Laotou, "The only concern is Ah Wu. I'm afraid she might be seen as marrying beneath her..."

Grandfather Liu didn't care about that and shook his head with a bitter smile, "What does a title matter? If the title sounds good, that wicked eldest son and his wife might use her to trade for more benefits again."

    That was true.

If Ah Wu were having a marriage where she stays at her family home, after Grandfather Liu was gone, Ah Wu would still be part of the Liu family and would inevitably be under her eldest uncle's thumb.

Ah Wu was so beautiful and had such a good temperament that her eldest uncle might see her as a resource to be exploited and married off...

But if it were a traditional marriage, Ah Wu would then be part of the Yu family.

If his eldest son tried to interfere with the Yu family, he would have to consider the law.

Moreover, Grandfather Liu's move was also because he trusted that the Yu family would be able to protect Ah Wu.

Wei Pozi was somewhat emotional, "Rest assured, whether Ah Wu marries into our family or Siyang becomes a live-in son-in-law for the Liu family, Ah Wu will always be our Yu family's daughter-in-law. We will protect her."

Yu Laotou also hurriedly nodded, indicating that what his wife said was also what he wanted to say.

Seeing this, Grandfather Liu felt somewhat relieved.

They continued to discuss the details of the wedding.

"...Since we're bringing Ah Wu into our home, I'll quickly fix up Siyang's room," Wei Pozi, being a woman of action, said, "We'll repaint the room and make some new furniture. We'll need these when the big courtyard is built anyway."

Grandfather Liu was even more satisfied seeing how attentive Wei Pozi was.

In no time, it was almost noon. Wei Pozi was excited and invited Grandfather Liu to stay for a simple meal.

Grandfather Liu thought about it and was quite curious about the Yu family's culinary standards, so he nodded and agreed.

Wei Pozi was excited and asked Yu Laotou to call everyone back home.

Yu Daniu and Yu Erhu spent some time talking with Grandfather Liu. Su Rouer and Shuangyun hurried out to buy some meat and fish. Wei Pozi, along with the best cook in the family, Li Chunhua, dived into the kitchen to start preparing the meal.
