Chapter 182: I'll Ask One Last Time

As soon as Xingxing saw the two kids, she gasped in surprise.

Still unsure if she was right, she leaned in closer to get a better look.

Wei Pozi noticed and was puzzled; Xingxing had never reacted this way before.

    "It's them! It's them!"

Xingxing was so excited that she pointed at the two children in the courtyard who were sharing the eggs. She was so agitated that she couldn't speak coherently for a moment.

The villager, with a touch of pride, said, "These are my grandsons. They're here with their mom today, just visiting."

A thought struck Wei Pozi, and she caught her breath.

"It's them!" Fortunately, Xingxing quickly recovered and, pointing excitedly at the two children in the courtyard, shouted, "Grandma, it's them! They knocked down Second Aunt and ran away!"

Wei Pozi's expression changed completely. "It's them?!"

The villager, surnamed Peng, was commonly called Old Lady Peng by the villagers.

Old Lady Peng's expression also changed. "What do you mean, 'knocking down'? My two grandsons only came to the village at noon today. How could they have knocked down your Second Aunt? Xingxing, don't think you can talk nonsense just because you're young."

Xingxing was anxious and hurriedly defended herself, "I’m not lying, Grandma! It's them! This afternoon, they knocked Second Aunt down, and she fell to the ground, bleeding so much, but they ran away! Second Aunt went through so much pain to give birth to the baby!"

Xingxing then pointed to the small basket on her back, "The baby is really sick, and we’re bringing eggs to pray for his health."

Xingxing’s words left the onlookers stunned, their faces pale with shock.

They hadn't expected such a backstory to the premature birth of Yujia's second daughter-in-law!

    Someone had knocked her down?

Old Lady Peng's expression became increasingly unpleasant as she looked back at her two grandsons.

Both children shrank back a little. The older one stiffened his neck, still stubborn. "That’s not true!"

He even added, "You're slandering us!"

The younger one hid further behind the older one.

Xingxing was getting more anxious. Her fair little face turned red, and she started arguing with the older child, "I was nearby! I saw it with my own eyes! You knocked Second Aunt down, and you even laughed! Then you ran away when you saw her bleeding!"

The more she spoke, the more anxious she became, and tears welled up in her eyes, remembering how pitiful Second Aunt had been.

The noise of the argument in the courtyard attracted the mother of the two children.

The mother of the two children lifted the door curtain and came out, asking, "What's going on?"

Wei Pozi, alarmed by what Xingxing had said, quickly explained, "They said... Dabao and Xiaobao knocked someone down and ran away..."

The two children probably thought their mother had come to support them, so they quickly hid behind her.

But their mother recalled something. "When you got home this afternoon, your shirts were covered in dirt. I had to brush it off with a feather duster. Did you knock someone down then?"

The older one's face changed slightly, still trying to hold on. "No, we just tripped. We didn’t hit anyone."

The younger one quickly chimed in, "Yeah, we just tripped."

Furious, their mother swept her gaze around the yard, grabbed a wooden mallet, and stormed over. “I’m asking you again, did you two knock anyone down or not?”

Her words startled not only the two children but also Peng Pozi.

A few villagers watching the scene spoke up, “They didn’t just knock someone down, they knocked down a pregnant woman who went into premature labor! That’s why the Yujia family is delivering eggs to every house, praying for blessings for the premature baby!”

When she realized her sons had knocked down a pregnant woman, their mother’s face went pale, and she dropped the mallet. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, “You knocked down a pregnant woman?!?”

The two children had never seen their mother like this and were terrified.

Even Peng Pozi felt embarrassed, unsure how to comfort her daughter-in-law.

Wei Pozi snapped, “It doesn’t stop there! They knocked down my second daughter-in-law and even laughed about it. They only ran when they saw her bleeding! ...If we hadn’t called Daxisipo over in time, I shudder to think what might have happened!”

    The mother’s hand trembled again.

She glared at her sons. “I’m asking you one last time, did you knock her down?”

The older one stammered, while the younger one burst into tears.

“Mom, we... we didn’t mean to... there was so much blood... we ran because we were scared...”

The younger one sobbed as he spoke.

Peng Pozi, feeling heartbroken for her grandsons, quickly tried to cover for them. “The children were just scared...”

Wei Pozi retorted sharply, “If they were just scared, why didn’t they tell any adults after they calmed down?! If it weren’t for my Xingxing finding help, I don’t even want to think about what could have happened!”

Peng Pozi had a sheepish look on her face. “Wei Erjie, don’t be angry. Dabao and Xiao Bao are still young...”

Wei Pozi almost scoffed. “Still young? They’re almost ten years old, aren’t they? Are they younger than my Xingxing?!”

    Peng Pozi was left speechless.

Their mother suddenly picked up the mallet and fiercely started hitting the two children’s backsides.

The boys, caught off guard by their mother’s sudden fury, screamed and darted around the yard like scared animals.

“Oh dear, oh dear,” Peng Pozi winced, feeling heartbroken. She tried to step in, but Wei Pozi grabbed her arm. “Grandmother Peng, your daughter is teaching her children. What’s a grandmother like you doing interfering?”

Held back by Wei Pozi, Peng Pozi could only watch helplessly as her two grandsons were chased around the yard, each one crying out in pain.

The villagers watching the spectacle were thoroughly entertained.

Wei Pozi secretly curled the corner of her mouth.

Those troublemakers deserved every bit of it.

The two boys were eventually beaten so badly that they collapsed on the ground, crying loudly.

    Peng Pozi felt heartbroken.

Their mother tossed the mallet aside and hurried over to apologize to Wei Pozi and the others. “I didn’t raise my two children well, Second Aunt Wei. How is Second Sister-in-law doing now? Is her health okay? I’ll bring over an old hen to see her tomorrow.”

Wei Pozi replied seriously, “It’s good that you know your children made a mistake. My second daughter-in-law suffered greatly this time; she almost went to the underworld. Luckily, the underworld didn’t want her. Otherwise, leaving behind three sons without a mother, how would their future be? ...You need to teach them properly. This time, it wasn’t too serious, but what happens the next time? You need to teach them better before it’s too late.”
