Chapter 235: Bitten by a Snake
by 小辫子Chapter 235: Bitten by a Snake
Xingxing was used to being led by her family, so she didn’t mind when others held her. She placed her small hand in Li Xuefeng's hand and looked up, asking, "Sister, where do you want to go and play?"
Li Xuefeng wasn’t really interested in playing around Nantuo Village. Her real intention was to build a good relationship with Xingxing. She smiled and said, "Wherever you think is fun, just lead me there."
Xingxing tilted her head and thought for a moment. "The streamside is the best place to play! But the water is still a bit cold now, so we can’t go in. Is that okay?"
"Of course, it's fine."
The two of them walked hand in hand toward the stream. Seeing the little girl smiling all the way, Li Xuefeng seized the opportunity to ask, "By the way, I heard you call her 'Auntie' earlier?"
Xingxing nodded. "Auntie is very good to me!"
She tugged at her dress with a hint of pride. "This dress was made by Auntie for me!"
She pointed to the golden little apricots at the hem of her dress. "Auntie specially embroidered these for me! No one else has them, you know!"
Li Xuefeng wasn’t really interested in who made Xingxing’s dress. She had only asked about Bai XiaoFeng to start a conversation.
She took the opportunity to ask again, "You have a big family, right? I heard you have several brothers."
When it came to her brothers, Xingxing beamed with pride. "Yes, my brothers are all amazing!"
Li Xuefeng’s heart raced. She was about to ask more about Yu Yonghuai when Xingxing suddenly pointed ahead and said, "Look, it's the stream!"
This accidentally cut off Li Xuefeng’s train of thought.
Li Xuefeng took a deep breath. Seeing Xingxing’s eager mood to show her the stream, she comforted herself inwardly, thinking that once she won the little girl over, Yu Yonghuai would be hers for the taking.
Li Xuefeng put on a smile again and pretended to be surprised. "Wow, this stream is so beautiful!"
"Right, right?" Xingxing liked the stream very much. Seeing that Li Xuefeng liked it too, she felt a little closer to her. She held Li Xuefeng's hand and quickly walked toward the stream bank.
"In the summer, my big brother takes us here to dig for crabs and catch fish~" Xingxing pointed at the stones by the stream. "But the water is still too cold now, so we’ll just play by the stream for a bit, okay?"
Li Xuefeng didn’t object. She excitedly followed Xingxing’s topic. "Wow, your big brother takes you to dig for crabs here? I heard your big brother is very strong. Is that true?"
Xingxing nodded vigorously without hesitation. "Big brother is very strong! He can lift a large jar with one hand!"
Xingxing stretched out her arms to demonstrate. "A jar this big!"
Li Xuefeng was delighted to hear that.
If Yu Yonghuai was that strong, he would definitely be able to pick her up without any problem!
But Xingxing knew it wasn’t right to keep boasting about her brothers, even though she thought they were amazing. So, after briefly praising her brother, she deliberately shifted the topic back to Li Xuefeng.
"Sister, is there anywhere else you'd like to see?"
Li Xuefeng wanted to ask more about Yu Yonghuai from Xingxing, but Xingxing felt that talking too much about her brothers would seem like showing off, so she stopped mentioning them altogether.
Li Xuefeng was anxious, and when Xingxing asked her where to go next, she impatiently pointed to a distant spot. "Let's go play over there."
Xingxing shielded her eyes with her hand and looked in that direction. She remembered that it was a wild field with tall grass.
"That's a wild field, sister. Do you really want to go?"
Li Xuefeng didn’t care whether the place was a wild field or not. She was only focused on spending more time with Xingxing and building a relationship to get more information about Yu Yonghuai.
She nodded casually. "Yeah, there are lots of flowers in the wild. I want to pick some."
Xingxing agreed.
Xingxing then led Li Xuefeng towards the wild field.
On the way, they encountered Aunt Wang, who had a good relationship with the Yu family. Xingxing specially greeted her, "Aunt Wang."
Aunt Wang smiled broadly. "Oh, little Xingxing, what are you up to? This is...?"
She eyed Li Xuefeng with some confusion.
Xingxing explained, "This is Sister Xuefeng, who is visiting relatives in our village. She wants to pick some flowers in the wild, and I'm taking her to do that."
Aunt Wang didn't think much of it and responded with an "Oh," but couldn't help praising Xingxing. "Our Xingxing is really capable!"
Xingxing smiled shyly.
Along the way, they encountered several other villagers, and Xingxing greeted everyone diligently.
The villagers were also very affectionate and caring towards Xingxing.
Li Xuefeng watched with a cold eye, thinking to herself that this little girl seemed to be quite popular in the village.
When they reached the wild field, many wildflowers were in bloom, clusters and patches of them, quite beautiful.
Xingxing told Li Xuefeng, "Sister, you can pick flowers. I want to pick some too!"
Li Xuefeng responded absent-mindedly, her mind focused on how to get more information about Yu Yonghuai from the little girl.
As her thoughts wandered, Li Xuefeng glanced at Xingxing and froze in shock—
Xingxing was crouched down, her little butt sticking out as she picked flowers, and a snake was slithering beside her, hissing and flicking its tongue toward her!
Li Xuefeng's heart pounded fiercely. Just as she was about to warn her, a thought suddenly crossed her mind—if this little girl got bitten by the snake and she saved her, wouldn't the Yu family owe her a debt of gratitude?
What a perfect plan!
Excited and with a dry mouth, Li Xuefeng held her breath, stepping back to avoid the snake's line of sight, quietly waiting on the side, not interfering, hoping the snake would bite Xingxing.
However, after a while, Xingxing showed no particular reaction and even excitedly held up the picked flowers, turning to Li Xuefeng. "Sister, look! Aren't these flowers beautiful?"
"They're alright—" Li Xuefeng responded casually, her heart growing anxious.
Did the snake bite her or not—
Li Xuefeng was anxious and couldn't help but peer towards Xingxing's feet.
But she saw nothing!
This couldn't be!
The snake had been hissing just a moment ago!
Anxiously, Li Xuefeng took two more steps forward, only to feel like she had stepped on something—
The snake suddenly lashed out, sinking its fangs into her calf!
Li Xuefeng saw a black and white striped snake swiftly slither away from her feet!
Li Xuefeng froze completely—oh no, I’ve been bitten by a snake!
Unable to hold back, she let out a piercing scream, “Ah—a snake bit me!”
Xingxing jumped at Li Xuefeng’s scream, the flowers in her hands falling to the ground.
“Ah! Sister, you were bitten by a snake?” Xingxing panicked. “Sit down quickly, try to stay calm—”
She remembered what Grandma Da Xi had taught her—if someone was bitten by a snake, you shouldn’t move at all!
