Chapter 36: Ju Geer Wakes Up
byChapter 36: Ju Geer Wakes Up
Su Rouer's eyes were filled with tears as she called out to Yu Sanbao, her voice choking with emotion, "Brother Leopard..."
But Yu Sanbao only said, "Go back to the room and rest. Your body hasn’t fully recovered yet. I’ll watch over Ju Geer."
When he said this, he did not look at Su Rouer.
Su Rouer felt inexplicably uneasy. She bit her lower lip, wanting to say something, but seeing Yu Sanbao’s tired face, she hesitated and ultimately said nothing.
She looked at Ju Geer, still unconscious on the bed, with some reluctance and whispered, "I’ll go back for now and come see Ju Geer again later."
Yu Sanbao merely nodded without saying anything else.
Ju Geer woke up early on the third day.
At that time, Xingxing was sitting by Ju Geer’s bed, weaving something with a few stalks of dogtail grass.
This was taught to her by her little uncle Yu Siyang, and Xingxing found it very interesting. Although she was a bit clumsy, she was having a lot of fun, already weaving half of a crooked “braid.”
"Cough... cough..."
A weak cough echoed, and Xingxing almost dropped the “braid” in her hands from fright.
Then she realized what had happened and, with wide almond eyes, looked at Ju Geer coughing on the bed. She ran out barefoot, forgetting to put on her shoes, shouting, "Grandpa, Grandma, Ju Geer is awake! Ju Geer is awake!"
Soon, a crowd gathered in the main house.
The first one to rush in was naturally Su Rouer. In the past two days, her fever had slowly subsided, and her spirits had improved significantly. However, she remained anxious because Ju Geer hadn’t woken up.
It was quite coincidental; she had just left after checking on Ju Geer that morning, heading back to her own room to get some cloth for sewing. It had been only about an incense stick’s time when Ju Geer woke up!
Su Rouer was incredibly excited. If it weren’t for Ju Geer’s injuries, she would have hugged him tightly.
"My heart’s treasure, how do you feel?"
Ju Geer was still somewhat dazed and clearly hadn’t fully comprehended what was happening.
Wei Pozi followed behind, noticing that Ju Geer’s lips were dry. She frowned, poured a bowl of water, tested its temperature with the back of her hand, and then handed it to Su Rouer at the front: "Give Ju Geer some water first."
Su Rouer pursed her lips, took the water, and began feeding Ju Geer.
Halfway through drinking, Ju Geer suddenly remembered something, pouted, and cried out, "Mom, I fell off the mountain... it hurt so much..."
Su Rouer’s heart nearly broke.
She held Ju Geer tightly, unable to utter a single word of reproach.
Old Man Yu’s frown smoothed out, and he seemed quite pleased: "It’s good that Ju Geer is awake, good that he’s awake! Daxisipo said that once he wakes up, there won’t be any major issues."
Everyone’s hearts, which had been hanging for days, finally settled.
"Alright, everyone, go back now."
Wei Pozi shooed away the people from the other two households: "All crowded here, the room is so small. Go, go, go, each of you has your own things to do!"
The people from the other two households walked out happily. But Yu Siyang, before leaving, turned back to Ju Geer and said, "Ju Geer, I made you a little horse these past two days. It’s really nice! I’ll give it to you when you’re better!"
Ju Geer perked up a bit and responded, "Thank you, Little Uncle!"
Gui Geer exclaimed, "Wow," and grabbed Yu Siyang’s arm: "Little Uncle, you can’t be biased. I want a little rabbit, you haven’t made one for me yet!"
Before Yu Siyang could reply, Bai Xiaofeng slapped Gui Geer on the head: "Ju Geer is sick, and you’re fighting with your sick brother. How mature of you!"
Yu Siyang chuckled and scratched his head: "There will be enough for everyone! I’ll make them one by one!"
He was delighted that his nephews liked what he made.
Yu Siyang left happily.
Ju Geer lay in Su Rouer’s arms, watching his family members laughing and chatting as they left the room. He was too young to express the warm feeling that made him smile involuntarily.
But somehow, he felt reassured.
Xingxing, beside him, quietly extended the half-finished dogtail grass braid she had been weaving, looking at Ju Geer expectantly: "I made this. Will you take it later?"
Ju Geer pouted, about to say "no," but then he remembered the little girl who had been watching over him while weaving the dogtail grass.
The word "no" stuck in his throat.
After a moment, Ju Geer reluctantly said, "...I’ll see if it looks good first!"
Feeling a bit embarrassed, he turned his face away, avoiding Xingxing’s gaze.
Xingxing was somewhat pleased with Ju Geer’s response.
Ju Geer wasn’t kind to her, but she didn’t hold it against him. She only remembered how Ju Geer’s small body lay at the bottom of the slope, looking like he was dying.
It was truly pitiful!
It reminded her of herself. If Grandma hadn’t saved her, would she have lain on the rocky beach, exposed to wind, rain, and bugs, with no one caring for her?
Su Rouer listened to her son and Xingxing talking, biting her lower lip, but said nothing.
In the room, besides the injured Ju Geer, only Old Man Yu, Wei Pozi, Xingxing, and Yu Sanbao and Su Rouer from their household remained.
Suddenly, Yu Sanbao looked at Su Rouer and spoke in a low voice, "…We had saved a few taels of silver. Where did you put it? This time, we spent a lot of money on Ju Geer’s medical expenses. Take one tael and contribute it to the common fund."
Su Rouer froze, her face turning slightly uncomfortable, and she stammered, unable to speak.
Wei Pozi frowned and refused, "There's no need to..."
But Yu Sanbao interrupted her unusually, "Mother, don't interfere in this."
Wei Pozi's frown deepened, and she said nothing more.
Su Rouer's body stiffened, and she could barely lift her head. She pleaded half-heartedly, "Brother Bao..." but Yu Sanbao looked at her firmly.
Su Rouer couldn't bring herself to meet Yu Sanbao's gaze.
Yu Sanbao's expression grew colder. "Don't tell me you don't even have a single tael of silver?"
Su Rouer couldn't even lift her head, stuttering and unable to speak.
Wei Pozi and Old Yu sensed something was amiss, and Wei Pozi's frown deepened.
Yu Sanbao took a deep breath. "Where's the money in our room?"
He was determined to make Su Rouer admit it herself.
Cornered, Su Rouer finally mustered the courage to say, "A few days ago, I went back to my parents' house... Naturally, I couldn't go empty-handed..."
At these words, even Old Yu's face changed slightly.
Wei Pozi drew a sharp breath, her anger flaring up.
But Ju Geer was still sick, and she didn't want to embarrass his mother in front of him.
Wei Pozi said coldly, "Old Three and his wife, come out with me first."
Su Rouer didn't want to leave and tried to evade, "...I can't leave Ju Geer here..."
Wei Pozi retorted coldly, "Now you remember you have a son?! Why didn't you think of that when you were taking the money?!"
Su Rouer was speechless and looked at Yu Sanbao helplessly.
