Chapter 49: Caught a Big Fish!

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er brought Xingxing back to the creek.

Luo Qiong Niu was with his few buddies, flipping stones by the creek to catch crabs.

Luo Qiong Niu glanced at them, seeing they were all fine, and knew there must be no trouble.

    He turned his gaze away.

But Liu Ge'er called out, "Thanks for coming to warn us earlier!"

Luo Qiong Niu felt somewhat uncomfortable and ignored Liu Ge'er.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er found a shady spot for Xingxing to sit on a large stone. They rolled up their pants, took off their shoes, and waded into the shallow part of the creek, ready to catch some fish.

Xingxing clenched her fists, watching nervously as Liu Ge'er slowly approached a fish.

But the fish was very alert. As soon as Liu Ge'er bent down and crept closer, it quickly swam away.

Liu Ge'er straightened up, feeling helpless.

These fish probably came from the upper reaches of River Mao.

In previous years, during a severe drought, River Mao had dried up significantly, and many people went fishing there. The fish that survived were now very smart.

At the slightest disturbance, they would dart away swiftly.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er spent nearly half an hour by the creek without catching anything.

Fortunately, Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er had good temperaments and didn't get frustrated. They treated it as a fun outing with their sister.

Especially with Xingxing cheering them on:

"Third Brother, Fourth Brother, keep going! ... It's okay, the fish just swam too fast! We'll catch the next one for sure!"

Encouraged by her sweet voice, the two brothers worked tirelessly, never losing spirit.

On the other hand, Luo Qiong Niu and his group had only found a few tiny crabs after flipping stones for a long time. They were quite frustrated.

Seeing Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er catching fish upstream, they grumbled to Luo Qiong Niu, "Brother Qiong Niu, those two Yu family boys must be causing trouble upstream, scaring our crabs away!"

Luo Qiong Niu remained silent and flipped another stone.

There was only moss under the stone, nothing else.

    His brows furrowed deeply.

The other boys suggested, "Brother Qiong Niu, why don't we chase those two Yu family boys away?"

Luo Qiong Niu frowned, "They catch their fish, and we catch ours. What's the problem?"

The others understood that Luo Qiong Niu didn't want to cause trouble with the Yu family boys.

While Luo Qiong Niu continued flipping stones, the other boys whispered among themselves:

"Are you stupid? You forgot that Brother Qiong Niu was bitten by a snake recently, and those Yu family kids saved him?"

"Oh right, I almost forgot! That's why we haven't fought with those Yu family boys lately."

"Cough cough, usually we're the ones getting beaten up, right?"

"Shut up, it's because they saved Brother Qiong Niu's life, so we're letting them be!"

"That's right! Saving someone's life is a big deal, isn't it?"

Luo Qiong Niu, still flipping stones, said without turning around, "I can hear everything you're saying. I think you guys need a good scolding! If you have that much energy, come help me flip more stones."

The boys laughed and came over, continuing to search for crabs.

    ...

After nearly an hour, Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er caught nothing. Finally, Xingxing spotted a fat-headed fish hiding in a narrow channel of the creek. It seemed to have gotten stuck while trying to escape, its head wedged between the rocks.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er's eyes lit up as they caught the fish!

This fish wasn't small; Liu Ge'er held it tightly, getting his clothes wet and struggling to keep it in his grasp.

"We have fish for dinner tonight!"

    Gui Ge'er was drooling.

"No, you forgot, Auntie took Elder Brother and Second Brother to visit her family. We should wait for them to come back," Liu Ge'er said, struggling to hold the wriggling fish.

"Right!" Gui Ge'er clapped his hands, "No problem, we can keep this fish at home and eat it in a few days!"

"Eat fish! Eat fish in a few days!" Xingxing was thrilled, carefully touching the smooth body of the fish and exclaiming, "It's so slippery!"

Liu Ge'er and Gui Ge'er couldn't help but laugh.

The three Yu children laughed and chatted happily, making Luo Qiong Niu and his friends envious.

They had been flipping stones for hours and only caught a few tiny crabs. While they could keep them as pets, roasting them wouldn't even fill their teeth.

Looking at the three Yu children who caught such a big fish, the boys were green with envy.

    Such—a—big—fish!

Someone suggested, "Why don't we just snatch that fish away?"

Luo Qiong Niu immediately glared at him.

The person quickly laughed it off, "Just kidding, I was just joking around..."

Luo Qiong Niu suddenly muttered to himself, "I heard my parents say that in our village, Xingxing... that little girl, is a lucky charm. How could those stinky kids from the Yu family be so lucky? It must be because Xingxing brought them good luck!"

The more he spoke, the more certain he became, "Yes, it must be like that!"

With this thought, Luo Qiong Niu felt a surge of excitement and strode forward to stand before Liu Ge'er and Gui Geer.

"Hey!" Luo Qiong Niu called out.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Geer looked at Luo Qiong Niu warily, afraid he might try to snatch the fish.

But Xingxing smiled and asked Luo Qiong Niu, "Brother Luo, what's up?"

Hearing "Brother Luo," Luo Qiong Niu's eyes widened!

His tongue almost tied itself in knots!

After a long moment, Luo Qiong Niu finally regained his composure and coughed, "Well, I heard you have really good luck. Can you help me pick a stone? I want to catch a crab."

Liu Ge'er frowned upon hearing this.

Gui Geer, being young and quick-tongued, retorted, "Don't blame my sister Xingxing for bad luck if you can't catch one!"

Luo Qiong Niu glared, "Am I that kind of person?!"

Liu Ge'er and Gui Geer both snorted coldly.

    —You are!

Xingxing, fearing another argument between her brother and Brother Luo, quickly intervened, "Xingxing is fine, Xingxing can help Brother Luo find one!"

Luo Qiong Niu glanced at Liu Ge'er and Gui Geer with a hint of smugness.

Liu Ge'er and Gui Geer were speechless; what was Luo Qiong Niu so smug about?

Xingxing didn't actually know how to choose stones, but seeing the hopeful look in Luo Qiong Niu's eyes, she tried her best to scrutinize the stones by the stream for a while before hesitantly pointing to one, "Brother Luo, how about this one?"
