Chapter 206: How Much More Polite Should I Be?
by 小辫子Chapter 206: How Much More Polite Should I Be?
Grandfather Liu's face was grim.
Clearly, he was not pleased with his eldest daughter-in-law.
"Have her wait in the main hall for me."
Grandfather Liu instructed impatiently.
The servants nodded and left.
Grandfather Liu turned to Ah Wu, his demeanor softening. "Ah Wu, don't be sad. Grandfather will give Yu Siyang a piece of his mind for you."
Ah Wu had been distracted by the news of Auntie's arrival, and her sadness had eased.
Hearing Grandfather Liu's words, Ah Wu felt a bit annoyed. "Grandfather!"
Grandfather Liu had deliberately said this, noticing that Ah Wu's sadness had diminished, and he couldn't help but smile a little more.
"Grandfather, don't tease me," Ah Wu said crisply. "Auntie is still waiting for you in the main hall. Come, let me accompany you to meet her."
Grandfather Liu paused and said deliberately, "You're not going to meet her with those puffy eyes, are you?"
"Ah." Ah Wu covered her eyes.
Grandfather Liu said, "Let Moliu help you reduce the swelling first. Since your auntie has come, she won't leave immediately. There's no need to rush to see her."
Ah Wu thought for a moment and realized that her grandfather had a point.
She covered her eyes and nodded several times before turning to walk into the room.
If Moliu hadn't pulled her quickly, she would have bumped into the doorframe.
Ah Wu's face turned red!
Afraid Grandfather might notice, she immediately closed the door as soon as she regained her balance.
As if closing the door could erase what just happened.
Grandfather Liu smiled slightly as he watched his granddaughter close the door, trying to hide her embarrassment.
But thinking of the elder Madame Liu waiting in the main hall, Grandfather Liu's smile quickly faded.
He shook his head and turned to go to the main hall.
When Grandfather Liu entered the main hall, the elder Madame Liu had already come forward upon hearing his arrival.
"Father." The elder Madame Liu greeted him with a smile. "It's been half a year, and you're still so hale and hearty."
Grandfather Liu responded with a faint "Hmm" and walked towards the upper seat.
Sitting in the chair, he examined the elder Madame Liu. "You seem to have grown a bit. It seems that after I left the capital, your life has been quite good."
The elder Madame Liu: "..."
Her father-in-law's words were anything but pleasant!
The elder Madame Liu could sense her father-in-law's mood and responded humbly. "What is Father talking about? After you left the capital, my husband often misses you..."
"Enough, let's get to the matter at hand." Grandfather Liu interrupted Lady Liu's words rather abruptly. "What are you here for this time?"
Lady Liu showed no sign of embarrassment.
She spoke slowly, "I came mainly to see how you and Ah Wu are doing. My husband is quite concerned about you and Ah Wu."
Grandfather Liu sneered inwardly.
If it weren't for that letter, he might have believed her just a little.
But now... hmm.
"There's one more thing," Lady Liu added with a touch of worry, "I brought Xiangxiang along this time... She's been thinking about Ah Wu and is also concerned about you. She begged to come along, but the journey exhausted her, and she fell ill. I need to find a doctor for her right away."
Grandfather Liu was both startled and annoyed.
He knew exactly why his eldest daughter-in-law had come.
She wasn't here for anything good, and yet she brought the child along!
And now the child is sick!
While Grandfather Liu loved Ah Wu above all, he still cared deeply for his other grandchildren. Xiangxiang, who was only three years younger than Ah Wu, had always been more delicate.
And yet, Lady Liu had brought her all this way.
Grandfather Liu grew even more annoyed. "Lady Liu, what are you standing there for? Go and find a doctor for Xiangxiang immediately!"
Lady Liu bent her knees in a curtsey and replied with a yes, then added, "Ever since Ah Wu came to the countryside with you, Xiangxiang has been thinking about her. Do you know where Ah Wu is? I'll let Xiangxiang know, so she won't worry and can rest properly."
A cold light flickered in Grandfather Liu's eyes.
"I hope you truly care about Ah Wu," he said coldly.
Lady Liu lowered her head and replied obediently, "I genuinely care about Ah Wu."
"Ah Wu is doing very well and will come to pay her respects to you in due time," Grandfather Liu said coldly. "But for now, don't worry about anything else and find a doctor for Xiangxiang first!"
Lady Liu respectfully agreed.
Although Grandfather Liu disliked the fact that Lady Liu and her husband were trying to push Ah Wu into a marriage alliance, he still cared about Xiangxiang and went to visit her in the guest room.
"Grandfather." Xiangxiang lay in bed, her small face pale, looking as if she really couldn't handle the journey and had fallen ill.
"Grandfather, why isn't Ah Wu sister here?" Xiangxiang asked weakly.
Grandfather Liu, feeling sorry for her, gently tucked the blanket around her. "Ah Wu doesn't know you're sick yet. Take good care of yourself and get well soon. You can see Ah Wu sister after you've recovered."
Xiangxiang nodded obediently.
The doctor examined Xiangxiang and said there was nothing too serious, just that she needed to rest in bed for a couple of days due to the journey.
When Ah Wu heard the news, she visited Xiangxiang the following day.
Xiangxiang, with her pale face, called out, "Ah Wu sister," looking pitifully weak.
Though Ah Wu wasn't very close with her siblings, she had a kind heart. Seeing Xiangxiang like this, she felt sorry for her. "Take good care of yourself and get well soon. Once you're feeling better, I'll take you kite-flying."
When it came to kites, Ah Wu couldn't help but remember what Xingxing had told her—her fourth uncle was an expert at crafting them, and his kites were legendary in the village.
Thinking about Siyang... and her mood sank. A heavy silence settled over her.
Liu Xiangxiang, always perceptive, sensed Ah Wu’s change in mood and tightened her grip on the blanket beneath her. "Ah Wu sister, are you unhappy?"
Ah Wu shook her head, not wanting to burden Liu Xiangxiang with her thoughts.
"Take care of yourself and rest up. I’ll come by to see you again tomorrow," Ah Wu said softly before getting up and leaving.
After she was gone, the elder Madam Liu came in and asked, "How did your conversation go?"
Liu Xiangxiang pouted. "Ah Wu doesn’t seem as foolish anymore. She seems to have grown distant, like she’s keeping her guard up around me. When I asked her, she didn’t say anything."
The elder Madam Liu shook her head. "Maybe it’s because you haven’t seen each other in so long... Remember, even if she’s a little different, she’s still your sister. Try to be a bit gentler with her; she can tell when you’re being kind."
Liu Xiangxiang felt wronged. "Mom, I don’t know what else I could do! I came all this way, and now I’m sick. Shouldn’t she be falling all over herself to thank me? But no, she just walks out after two questions. What’s wrong with her?"
"It’s alright, sweetie. Ah Wu cares about you, even if she doesn’t show it. Focus on getting better, and we’ll figure everything else out later."
Liu Xiangxiang pouted but nodded in agreement.
