Chapter 751: Truly a Remarkable Fate

On the official road outside Anjiang City, a nondescript carriage creaked along the way.

Inside the carriage, Xingxing had used disguise potion to conceal both her and Wei Shiyan's appearances.

Yu Yonggui glanced at the two and chuckled. "Now you see how advantageous my average looks are, don’t you?"

Xingxing touched the disguise on her face and suddenly recalled something.

When she had fallen from the cave into the cold pool earlier, her face had also been disguised with potion.

But back then, Wei Shiyan seemed to have recognized her anyway?

Later, when the disguise faded and she had no prepared potion on hand, she no longer needed to conceal her appearance. Yet even when she showed her real face, Wei Shiyan didn’t seem the least bit surprised.

Xingxing found herself looking at Wei Shiyan again.

Now, after her application of the disguise potion, Wei Shiyan appeared sallow-faced. Though he still looked clean-cut and decent, he was nothing like his original devastatingly handsome appearance.

Xingxing studied Wei Shiyan for a while longer. To be fair, she felt that if Wei Shiyan had appeared before her like this from the start, she would still have recognized him.

So she dropped the question of how Wei Shiyan had recognized her.

The first two checkpoints passed without much trouble—not because the inspections weren’t strict, but because Chaoyang Tower had prepared fake identity documents for Wei Shiyan, and with Xingxing’s help in altering their appearances, the patrols naturally couldn't spot anything wrong.

Yu Yonggui couldn’t help but gloat. "After all, intel is our specialty—"

But before he could finish his self-satisfied remark, an extremely delighted voice suddenly rang out at the third checkpoint ahead:

"...I recognize this carriage! This is Brother Feng and Miss Feng’s carriage!"

At the sound of that voice, both Xingxing and Yu Yonggui stiffened slightly.

Outside the carriage, someone galloped over on horseback and stopped beside them, his voice overflowing with excitement. "Brother Feng! Miss Feng! Is that you?"

Yu Yonggui and Xingxing exchanged a glance. Yu Yonggui lifted the carriage curtain, his expression indifferent. "Oh, sarcastically, well if it isn't Master Pang."

He nailed the tone of a doting elder brother who had just learned that his newly acquainted "friend" had the nerve to ask his beloved younger sister to become his concubine.

—To be honest, if Yu Yonggui had acted according to his own principles, Pang Jinkang would likely have gotten his teeth knocked in by now.

But alas, they had to maintain the guise of regular folks.

Yu Yonggui thought to himself with contempt.

Pang Jinkang, of course, noticed the change in his "Brother Feng’s" attitude toward him and turned red with shame.

But this slight shame was clearly not enough to deter Pang Jinkang’s obsession with Xingxing.

Thick-skinned, he pretended not to notice Yu Yonggui’s coldness and put on a fake smile. "...Brother Feng, is Miss Feng also in the carriage?"

Yu Yonggui’s hands balled into fists!

With a face like thunder, he dropped the curtain and simply stopped responding to Pang Jinkang.

Pang Jinkang hastily dismounted and bowed deeply outside the carriage, his face reddening. "...Miss Feng, I am truly sorry for my behavior. Hearing that you had left Anjiang, I grew worried sick and wished to apologize to you in person."

Having said this, Pang Jinkang stayed bent over, refusing to get up. It was as if he would stay in that position until she responded or he died.

Xingxing frowned, not wanting to engage at first.

    Wei Shiyan's face darkened.

But just then, another horse galloped over and stopped beside the carriage.

A stranger's voice laughed and asked, "Young Master, what's the matter here? Is something wrong?"

At the sound of this voice, Wei Shiyan lifted his head and looked at Xingxing.

He wordlessly mouthed, "I've heard this voice before."

    Xingxing immediately understood.

This guy must've been one of Wei Shiyan's pursuers.

The carriage instantly filled with tension.

Wei Shiyan kept his cool as he slowly reached for his concealed sword—in truth, he had wanted to do so earlier.

Yu Yonggui's hand also went to the flexible blade on his hip.

Outside, Pang Jinkang spoke up as he rubbed his neck awkwardly and replied, "Nah, Uncle Jin, I just ran into some friends... just shooting the breeze."

The man chuckled, "If they're friends, why stay hidden in the carriage while you're baking out here in the sun?"

    Clearly, suspicions had been raised.

Pang Jinkang backpedaled, "No, Uncle Jin, it's because I did something wrong and am apologizing."

Old Jin chuckled, "Is that so?... Still, Young Master, don't blame me for being cautious. The Magistrate's been clear that there must be no slip-ups in hunting down those notorious bandits. No amount of caution is too much."

    Pang Jinkang hesitated.

Ever since Xingxing left Anjiang, Pang Jinkang was lovesick, couldn't eat a thing.

The men he had sent to chase after the Feng family's carriage had returned empty-handed. Pang Jinkang was devastated.

After moping around the house for days, Pang Jinkang could no longer sit still. He paced like a chicken with its head cut off, even lost weight from pining.

Seeing her son in such a state, the Magistrate's Wife, Luo Shi, was worried sick and could only think of a way to send him to the checkpoints along major routes, to give him something to do.

Upon seeing how tightly guarded the checkpoint was, Pang Jinkang felt a glimmer of hope—perhaps he might encounter Xingxing again.

Now, Pang Jinkang knew he and Miss Feng were meant to be!

They had actually met once more!

—However, Pang Jinkang hadn't forgotten his father's repeated warnings not to interfere with the checkpoint's official duties.

Just as Pang Jinkang was unsure how to broach the topic with Xingxing and the others, Xingxing lifted the carriage curtain.

Seeing that face he'd been dreaming about made Pang Jinkang's breath catch.

But Xingxing didn't spare him a glance, stepping out of the carriage first.

    Yu Yonggui followed closely behind.

Just as Pang Jinkang thought both siblings had alighted and was about to speak to them, he saw Xingxing extend a hand toward the carriage door and say, "You're not strong—take it easy."

Then, Pang Jinkang saw a sallow, sickly-looking man step down from the carriage, holding onto Xingxing's hand.

Pang Jinkang went pale with rage!

Him?! How dare he touch Miss Feng's hand!

Yu Yonggui paid Pang Jinkang no mind either and handed three travel permits to the middle-aged man surnamed Jin.

The middle-aged man surnamed Jin had seen Wei Shiyan before.

At one moment, he thought this frail man’s frame vaguely matched Wei Shiyan’s, but the next, he dismissed the idea—this man looked so ill he seemed on the verge of death, a far cry from the commanding presence he’d seen astride a horse.

Moreover, after carefully inspecting all three travel permits and finding no flaws, he finally dropped his suspicions.
