    Chapter 386: The Runaway Carriage

Under the heavy snowfall, the streets were nearly empty of pedestrians. Occasionally, a few passersby strolled in the snow, either wearing straw raincoats or holding umbrellas, all hurrying on their way.

However, the playful laughter of children along the street and the faint creak of carriage wheels crunching through the snow strangely blended together.

Xingxing, holding a hand warmer in the carriage, lazily lay on Wei Pozi's lap, listening to the soft murmurs between Wei Pozi and Li Chunhua... All of this painted Xingxing's fleeting impression of the capital's first snow.

The snow-covered road was treacherous. Although the Yujia family's carriage had been modified by Yu Siyang with good anti-slip effects, Wei Pozi still instructed the coachman to drive the carriage slowly for safety.

They left early, so they were not worried about arriving late; safety was the priority.

However, despite their caution, they still encountered an unexpected situation—

Due to the thick snow and slippery road, while Wei Pozi and her companions were careful, others were not—a runaway carriage barreled straight out of an alley and collided with the Yujia family's carriage!

Panicked screams of women erupted from the carriage, clearly indicating that the coachman of that carriage could not control the runaway and slipping carriage!

Xingxing leaned out to take in the snowy view outside and immediately shouted to alert their coachman: "Move forward quickly!"

The Yujia family's coachman almost instinctively whipped the horse, which, in pain, started running, and the Yujia family's carriage just barely dodged the side collision!

As for the runaway carriage, it skidded and slammed into the wall across the alley entrance, making a loud impact!

Xingxing could even hear screams coming from that carriage!

The horse didn’t die immediately but, writhing in pain, went berserk, dragging the damaged carriage forward, with the women inside wailing and shrieking for help.

The runaway carriage narrowly missed the Yujia family's carriage and crashed into another shop at the street corner. The handful of pedestrians on the road panicked and scattered in every direction.

The horse eventually crashed into the entrance of a tavern.

At this early hour, the tavern was not yet open. The runaway horse smashed through the door and thrashed in the tavern’s hall.

The coachman lay sprawled on the ground, eyes wide, a large pool of blood at the back of his head, and was crushed under the dead horse, seemingly lifeless.

The carriage was severely damaged and lay on its side. A woman dressed as a maid struggled to crawl out, extending a blood-stained hand: "Help... help..."

She slumped to the ground, her fate uncertain.

The gruesome sight made Wei Pozi’s heart pound! She felt the relief of a narrow escape!

    Fortunately, they avoided it, otherwise...

Of course, this thought only flashed through her mind, as Wei Pozi had no time to think about anything else. She quickly got off the carriage and hurried towards the damaged carriage in the tavern's hall.

The coachman appeared lifeless, but others were still trapped inside the carriage; they had to be rescued first!

No one in the Yujia family was idle. Even the Yujia family's coachman, after securing the carriage on the side of the street, quickly ran over to help rescue people from the carriage.

A few passing pedestrians also came to help.

Finally, four people were rescued from the carriage.

Apart from the maid who had initially reached out for help, there was also a woman with her eyes tightly closed and blood stains on her head.

Next to her was a girl, also covered in blood, pale-faced, and limp, unconscious. Although she was still alive, her condition was clearly very poor.

There was also a little boy tightly held in the woman's arms. He was the least injured among the four in the carriage, but it was unclear where he was hurt, as his cries were faint, like a kitten’s.

The little boy was the only one awake out of the four, but the lady held him tightly even in her unconsciousness. A passerby helped Li Chunhua, and they managed to take the boy out of the lady's arms. He was shaking and crying uncontrollably.

Wei Pozi muttered, "What a disaster," and quickly told the maid to grab a spare cloak from the Yujia carriage to wrap the boy in.

A nearby shopkeeper, who had opened his shop early, seeing what happened, quickly brought out a bowl of hot water and handed it to the boy, saying, "Here, drink some hot water first."

"Go quickly and get a doctor from the nearby clinic," Wei Pozi instructed the coachman.

The coachman nodded and rushed off without even taking an umbrella.

Xingxing was checking the pulse of the lady who seemed the most severely injured.

The lady was still unconscious, her head covered in blood, likely from hitting the carriage wall during the horse's out-of-control collision.

When Xingxing checked her pulse, her expression changed suddenly, and she exclaimed, "This is bad!"

She looked under the lady and, sure enough, saw a lot of blood slowly seeping out.

In winter, people wear thick clothes, and the lady's head injury was severe, drawing most of the attention. If Xingxing hadn’t checked her pulse, no one would’ve noticed that the lady was pregnant and had miscarried!

Wei Pozi and Li Chunhua turned pale when they heard this.

As women, they naturally knew at a glance that this was a miscarriage—and now, with the lady severely injured and miscarrying, it was like the Grim Reaper was calling her!

Xingxing acted fast, pulling out a pill wrapped in oil paper from her pouch and placing it in the lady's mouth.

Xingxing then hurried to check the pulse of the maid who seemed the second most injured.

Xingxing let out a small sigh of relief.

The maid had also suffered a head injury, but fortunately, with proper care, she’d be fine.

Xingxing then checked the pulse of the unconscious girl and found that her unconsciousness was also due to the collision inside the carriage.

Both the maid and the girl were not in life-threatening danger.

Xingxing finally relaxed and hurried back to check the pulse of the little boy who was still awake but trembling uncontrollably.

The boy had just been given a few sips of hot water, but it didn't seem to help much. He was still trembling and crying.

He looked about two or three years old, about the same age as Xu Ge'er. Xingxing was worried he might have internal injuries.

Fortunately, after checking his pulse, Xingxing found that the child was just frightened, and there were no signs of injury.

By now, the coachman who had been pinned under the dead horse had also been rescued.

He seemed to have died with his eyes wide open, looking terrifying.

Wei Pozi and Li Chunhua couldn't bear to look at him again after a glance. Li Chunhua turned away, clasped her hands, closed her eyes, and whispered a prayer to the gods in the sky.
