Chapter 521 Xingxing Is Our Little Lucky Star
by 小辫子Chapter 521 Xingxing Is Our Family's Little Lucky Star
Wei Zihang’s gaze was somewhat dazed.
Even Ju Geer gulped: "Man, your family’s been really unlucky lately, huh?"
Way too much has been going wrong!
Wei Zihang stared at the charred remains of the talisman in the sachet with a complicated expression, murmuring, "Could it really be that our family’s feng shui has been bad lately?"
The Marchioness of Jiping (his mother) had been so frantic lately that she had started desperately seeking out "masters" and "experts" to inspect the manor.
However, after being forced to drink two bowls of inky-black talisman brew and nearly collapsing from diarrhea, Wei Zihang had become skeptical of these so-called "masters" and scoffed at the idea of feng shui being the problem.
But now, the perfectly intact talisman in his sachet had been reduced to ashes, and he had nearly been hit by an out-of-control carriage earlier—wasn't that proof?
The talisman had taken the hit in his place!
Wei Zihang and Ju Geer both realized this at the same time!
"The talisman worked!"
Ju Geer, having grown up with Xingxing, immediately slapped his thigh: "That's ridiculous! It’s not the talisman that worked—who in your family doesn’t have a few talismans on them? Did those help? What worked was my sister!"
Wei Zihang widened his eyes: "Xingxing?"
"Exactly! You mean you didn't know? Xingxing is actually our family’s little lucky star! Before she came to our family, we were still struggling through the famine. But after she arrived, our lives just kept getting better!" Ju Geer swelled with pride as he recalled it. "I’m telling you, it’s not an exaggeration—Xingxing really is our family’s little lucky star! Our family’s fortunes improved because of her! That talisman of yours was also specially obtained through Xingxing's prayers—well? Did it work or what?!"
Wei Zihang had an epiphany and believed wholeheartedly: "So it was Xingxing who saved me!"
Wei Zihang even looked a little excited. Ju Geer felt a twinge of irritation for a moment, but then he thought—this was a matter of life and death. If Xingxing’s luck could help his good friend, that was a good thing.
Ju Geer didn’t hesitate: "I’ll go ask Xingxing. She probably still has some talismans left. Wait here, I’ll bring them all to you in a bit."
Wei Zihang nearly jumped up: "I’ll go with you!"
Ju Geer instinctively wanted to refuse, but he held back. After all, this was a matter of life and death. He snorted and took Wei Zihang to Xingxing’s Qiushui Courtyard.
A lingering winter chill hung in the spring air. Zhao Ying was helping Xingxing put on her cloak when a maid announced that the fifth young master had arrived with Wei Zihang. She let out a surprised "Huh?"
But Xingxing knew her brother wasn’t one to act recklessly, so she remained still, letting Zhao Ying continue tying the cloak’s ribbons.
When Ju Geer entered with Wei Zihang, Zhao Ying had just finished adjusting Xingxing’s cloak.
"What is it?" Xingxing turned to ask Ju Geer.
Wei Zihang felt his mood instantly brighten upon seeing Xingxing, forgetting what he had wanted to say to her.
It was Ju Geer who scowled at Wei Zihang, then plucked the sachet from his waist and handed it to Xingxing: "Xingxing, look at this."
Xingxing took it as instructed and opened it, revealing the charred remains of the talisman.
"This is…?"
Ju Geer explained: "This is the talisman you got for me from the White Horse Temple. Wei Zihang’s been wearing it. This morning, he almost got hit by an out-of-control carriage, and now we found the talisman reduced to ashes. It must’ve taken the hit in his place."
Wei Zihang quickly added: "This can't possibly be a coincidence. My family’s been having a string of misfortunes lately—everyone’s been getting injured or meeting with accidents. I thought it might just be chance, but if the feng shui was bad, why was I spared? Then this happened today..."
Ju Geer nodded: "So, Xingxing, do you have any more of those talismans?"
Xingxing let out an "Ah": "Most of the amulets I prayed for last time have already been given away. I've only got two left here."
Xingxing told Zhao Ying, who went into the room and fetched two sachets.
"I originally meant to give these to Sis Cheng and her siblings, but I haven’t had the chance to deliver them yet. Here, take these first." Xingxing handed the sachets over.
Wei Zihang was all too happy to take them.
But Ju Geer snatched the two sachets before Wei Zihang could, took out the amulets inside, and placed them directly into Wei Zihang’s outstretched palm. He said unhappily, "These sachets were embroidered by my sister herself. It’s not appropriate for you to have them. Just take the two amulets—that'll do."
Wei Zihang thought it over and agreed. He didn’t insist, feeling that having two amulets was already quite fortunate. After all, a young lady’s embroidery shouldn’t end up in the hands of an outsider like him.
But it didn’t matter. Wei Zihang told himself inwardly—once he married Xingxing, he'd just have his wife make him a sachet. That wouldn’t be too much to ask, right?
"Still, two might not be enough," Xingxing decided. "I’ll make a trip to White Horse Temple outside the city later to get more amulets for you."
Wei Zihang was nearly moved to tears.
His Xingxing was truly as kind as she was beautiful!
"Wonderful, wonderful! Don’t worry about it, it's no trouble—" Wei Zihang was buzzing with excitement.
Ju Geer, though displeased, said nothing.
Xingxing shook her head. "Don’t worry about it, it’s no trouble."
Wei Zihang hesitated. "But isn’t there the garden party today…?"
Xingxing replied, "The garden party can wait till next time. Let’s go seek the amulets first."
Wei Zihang was so touched that he nearly wept. He reached out, emotionally preparing to declare that he would marry no one but her in this lifetime—but the moment he opened his mouth to speak, Ju Geer, who knew him all too well, rushed over and slapped a hand over his mouth.
Ju Geer glared and warned in a low voice, "Don’t spout nonsense in front of my sister! She’s still young—some gratitude this is?!"
Wei Zihang shut his mouth, aggrieved.
With the decision made, both Ju Geer and Wei Zihang ditched their academy classes to accompany Xingxing to White Horse Temple outside the city.
However, no one expected that just as Xingxing’s carriage cleared the estate gates—before Ju Geer and Wei Zihang could even mount their horses—a household retainer from the Jiping Commandery Prince’s residence came running in a panic. He dropped to his knees before Wei Zihang, crying, "Fourth Young Master! Second Miss suddenly vomited blood and fainted for no reason! The imperial physicians have come, and they say… they say Second Miss might not make it past the afternoon!"
The news hit like a thunderbolt, leaving Wei Zihang utterly stunned.
His first reaction was to shout, "Impossible!"
Wei Zihang was gasping for air, clutching his collar tightly. "Impossible! How could this be?! My second sister was perfectly fine when I left—"
But as soon as he said this, Wei Zihang immediately remembered the burned-out amulet in his sachet. His face turned deathly pale, and he staggered, nearly collapsing.
"No… this can’t be happening—this absolutely can’t be—"
