Chapter 39: Shocked by This Unsophisticated Little Girl!
byChapter 39: Shocked by This Unsophisticated Little Girl!
Ju Geer didn't know what had come over him; the moment he saw Xingxing's somewhat dimmed expression, he almost jumped up and immediately defended himself, "My mom doesn't dislike you—"
Confronted with Xingxing's suddenly brightened eyes, Ju Geer was at a loss for words...
Xingxing eagerly awaited Ju Geer to continue explaining how his mom "didn't dislike" her, but Ju Geer stammered and couldn't get any more words out.
Gradually, Xingxing understood and sighed like a little adult, "It's okay, Xingxing knows."
Hearing this tone, Ju Geer felt even more uneasy.
He frowned and said loudly, "Don't speak yet, let me think!"
Xingxing obediently responded with an "Oh" and waited quietly for Ju Geer to finish thinking.
After a long while, Ju Geer finally remembered something and exclaimed happily, "I remember!... My mom is making shoe soles for you!"
He recalled seeing his mother doing needlework before leaving, making shoe soles. The soles were small, clearly not for his feet.
Such tiny feet, who else could they belong to besides this annoying little Xingxing?
Hearing this, Xingxing's eyes lit up again, still in disbelief, "Really? Third Aunt is making shoe soles for Xingxing?"
Ju Geer, seeing this unsophisticated little girl react so strongly, felt a bit more balanced and huffed, "Would I lie to you!"
Xingxing was very happy and smiled foolishly, cupping her face with her hands.
Everyone in the Yu family was nice, though she didn't understand why Third Aunt and Ju Geer seemed to dislike her. But if Third Aunt and Ju Geer could like her, it would be wonderful!
Then there wouldn't be any more arguments at home because of her!
Xingxing was so happy!
Seeing Xingxing's silly smile, Ju Geer couldn't help but grin too. Just as he was about to laugh, he suddenly realized, why was he laughing with this annoying little girl?
That was too weird!
Ju Geer quickly straightened his mouth, put on his most rebellious four-year-old expression, and said coolly, "Alright, stop that silly grin, let's go dig wild vegetables!"
The two little ones dug for nearly half an hour until they were almost exhausted.
Xingxing still had some energy left, but she secretly took care of the recently recovered Ju Geer, not wanting him to tire too much. So she claimed she was too tired to lift her arms, and Ju Geer reluctantly agreed to stop for the day.
Fortunately, their little bamboo baskets were almost full, a bountiful harvest.
Looking at the full basket of wild vegetables, Ju Geer felt a surge of accomplishment!
But Xingxing suddenly went "Hmm?"
Ju Geer raised an eyebrow, "What is it?"
He thought it must be because he had dug so many good wild vegetables, shocking this unsophisticated little girl!
Ha, yes, that must be it!
Xingxing furrowed her little brow and picked out a wild vegetable from Ju Geer's basket, "This one, Third Brother told me we can't eat it. It's spicy and poisonous."
"This one can't be eaten either..."
"And this one..."
Xingxing quickly identified them, and soon half of the wild vegetables in Ju Geer's basket were set aside.
"These can't be eaten. But they can be fed to the chickens and pigs."
Ju Geer looked as if he had been struck by lightning.
He was not convinced; before he started digging, Xingxing had shown him several examples and instructed him to look for wild vegetables of those types.
He angrily pointed at the wild vegetables Xingxing had set aside, "What's different about these compared to the ones you showed me?"
Xingxing exclaimed, "They're completely different."
Xingxing didn't understand why Ju Geer questioned the difference when they looked entirely different to her.
Ju Geer glared at Xingxing in frustration.
Unable to bear it, he gathered all the wild vegetables Xingxing had set aside into his arms and held them against his clothes:
"I'll go find Auntie! Let Auntie take a look!"
Xingxing was confused.
Isn't it obvious they're different? Why does he need to ask Auntie?
But Xingxing didn't argue with Ju Geer. Her attention was drawn to a small patch of grass growing between the rocks on a nearby cliff.
Ju Geer, however, stormed off with his basket and the wild vegetables in his arms.
Ju Geer entered the house and called out loudly, "Auntie!"
"What's wrong, Ju Geer?" Li Chunhua was tidying up in the kitchen and came out upon hearing his call. Seeing Ju Geer holding a bunch of wild vegetables, she was taken aback, "Did you go digging for wild vegetables?"
Ju Geer placed the wild vegetables down and also set down his bamboo basket, pulling Li Chunhua over to look, "Auntie, can you see if these can be eaten?"
Li Chunhua glanced at them and laughed, "Ju Geer, where did you dig these?"
Ju Geer replied in a childish voice, "From the same field where we usually dig wild vegetables."
Li Chunhua squatted down and rummaged a few times, becoming even more certain.
She pointed to what Ju Geer had placed from his arms: "We can't eat these, but we can give them to the chickens and pigs."
Then she pointed to what was in Ju Geer's basket: "These are all good. Later, Auntie will make you some wild vegetable pancakes to eat."
Ju Geer was dumbfounded!
"R-really can't eat them?"
Li Chunhua exclaimed, not thinking much of it: "You sorted these out specifically for the chickens and pigs, didn't you?... We can't eat these. I didn't expect our young Ju Geer to be able to tell the difference between what people eat and what chickens and pigs eat."
Ju Geer instantly wilted!
It was exactly as Xingxing had said!
Just as he was feeling frustrated, he heard Xingxing calling "Grandma, Grandma" and running back from outside.
Wei Pozi had already lifted the curtain and was smiling as she watched Ju Geer and Li Chunhua talking in the main room.
Hearing Xingxing call "Grandma, Grandma" while running back, Wei Pozi's smile grew wider. She walked a few steps and caught the little girl: "Xingxing, why are you running so fast? Aren't you afraid of falling?"
"Grandma!" Xingxing wiped the sweat from her face, ignoring everything else, and proudly showed Wei Pozi the small plant in her arms.
Her round almond eyes were wide open: "Grandma, look! Isn't this the same heartburn grass we sold last time?"
Wei Pozi was startled and leaned in for a closer look—it really was!
This heartburn grass had long, spread-out leaves, bright green and clearly of excellent quality!
Wei Pozi's hands trembled: "Xingxing, where did you find this?"
"Just where we were digging for wild vegetables! I checked, there's only one!" Xingxing wiped her sweat, asking innocently, "Grandma, can we sell this one for money?"
Lol
