Chapter 288: Ruckus – Daily Melon Eating in the Courtyard of the Sickly Young Lady
by 苓菱子Chapter 288: Chaos—The Daily Shenanigans of the Sickly Young Aunt in the Courtyard
The commotion in Lin Shu's room quickly drew the attention of Mother Jiang, who had been standing right outside the door.
"Lin Shu, you little troublemaker! What are you doing? Open the door right now!"
"Mom, Mom—I think I just heard Dahu and Erhu's voices. Were they inside just now?" Jiang Da Sao seized the chance to add fuel to the fire.
The sound of children crying came from inside, and Mother Jiang immediately panicked. "Open the door! Whatever it is, come at me instead! What kind of person picks on two little kids?"
Mother Jiang assumed that their earlier taunts had provoked Lin Shu, and now she was taking her anger out on her two darling grandsons.
"Jiang Yang! Jiang Yang! Come out here and see what your wife is doing!" Mother Jiang hastily called for help.
Lin Qing and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lin, all pressed against the windowsill.
Mr. Lin scratched his head. "Why does it feel like Lin Shu has become even more of a handful since she got married?"
Mrs. Lin rolled her eyes at his remark. "She was always like this. I just didn’t bother you with these trivial matters because I thought you were tired from work."
"Huh?" Mr. Lin genuinely had no idea.
Lin Qing, however, knew exactly what her mother meant. Having grown up with Lin Shu, she and her mother had spent the most time at home with Lin Shu and her mother while Mr. Lin was at work.
Her mother was right—Lin Shu had always been a troublemaker. But back then, her antics were mostly about squabbling with Lin Qing over every little thing. Lin Qing had brushed it off to keep the peace at home, which was why things never escalated.
Now, Mrs. Lin glanced toward the west side room and dove into a rant about Lin Shu’s past misbehavior.
"So all this happened without me knowing?" Mr. Lin suddenly realized that the eldest family had been causing trouble for a long time.
Lin Qing didn’t say much, letting her father come to terms with it on his own.
Meanwhile, in the west side room, Lin Shu pushed the two brats off of her.
Jiang Dahu had just pushed her, so of course, she had to retaliate. A kid just a few years old was no match for her.
Once she got hold of Jiang Dahu, she landed a few smacks on his bottom.
Jiang Dahu, used to being the little tyrant at home, bawled his eyes out at the sudden spanking.
Mother Jiang was beside herself outside the door.
Jiang Yang, hearing his mother’s shouts, rushed out.
"Mom, what’s wrong?"
"What’s wrong? You dare ask what’s wrong? Listen! Just listen! Your sons are about to be beaten to death by that witch you married!" Mother Jiang shot her favorite son a glare.
Jiang Yang was startled by the sound of his children’s ear-splitting howls. What the hell was happening?
"Get that door open now! Save Dahu and Erhu!" Mother Jiang urged.
Jiang Yang pushed the door, but it was locked from the inside. "It’s locked from the inside!"
"Then what do we do? What do we do?" Mother Jiang grabbed Jiang Yang’s arm and shook him repeatedly.
Father Jiang and Jiang Hai also came out.
Father Jiang’s face twisted in anger. "See what kind of wife you brought home!"
Jiang Yang wore a pained expression. He had no idea what had happened—he had been chatting with his father and elder brother in the back room and hadn’t noticed anything outside.
"Mom, first tell me what exactly happened?"
"What happened? That wife of yours is just plain malicious! All I said was that she couldn’t bear children. You already have two sons, and I wasn’t even pressuring her, so why was she giving me the cold shoulder?" Mother Jiang seemed to have an epiphany as she spoke. "Right! She must have taken it out on Da Hu and Er Hu because of this. She wants to harm your sons!"
Jiang Yang’s face hardened. The sound of the children wailing loudly inside, combined with his mother’s words—could Lin Shu really be thinking that way?
"Lin Shu, open the door! Open the door!" Jiang Yang called out several times, but whether Lin Shu didn’t hear him or was pretending not to, no one came to open the door.
His cool composure vanished. After the door wouldn't budge despite several pushes, he took a step back and gave the door a powerful kick.
One kick wasn’t enough, so he followed up with several more.
Bang!
The door finally gave way.
Fortunately, Jiang Yang had only kicked near the handle, so when the door opened, it didn’t collapse entirely, sparing Lin Shu and the two little rascals from being crushed.
When the door swung open, everyone outside gaped in shock.
The commotion had already drawn the attention of nearby households, and seeing Jiang Yang kick the door down, they rushed over to the west wing rooms.
After exchanging a glance, Lin Qing and her mother slipped away stealthily and quietly blended into the crowd of onlookers.
"Hey? Why’d you leave without me?" Lin’s father called out when he saw his wife and daughter already at the doorway.
"Hurry up and follow," Lin’s mother replied without turning, a few steps ahead.
When Lin Qing and her mother saw the scene inside the room, their eyes nearly bulged—had the room been robbed?
Jiang Yang stared at the chaotic mess before him. Was this really the same room he had left that morning?
Mother Jiang rushed in as soon as she saw her precious grandsons pinned down by Lin Shu.
"My poor grandsons!"
Once the door was open, Lin Shu seized the moment to let go and jumped to Jiang Yang’s side.
"Yang-ge, Yang-ge, you don’t know—when I came in, those two were going through my clothes and throwing things everywhere! Look, look at this new dress I just bought—they tore it to pieces!" Lin Shu pointed at the dress she had shown Jiang Yang just the day before.
Jiang Yang's vision swam. That dress had cost a full twenty-five yuan (a significant sum at the time)! Twenty-five yuan!
Yesterday, the dress had been intact. Now, it was scattered in three different places—had it really been reduced to tatters in just one day?
Alright, if what Lin Shu said was true, then even without her, he’d have to teach those two little bastards a lesson!
"So what if they tore your dress?" Mother Jiang pulled her grandsons up and immediately jumped to their defense upon hearing Lin Shu’s complaint.
"Mom, do you know that dress cost twenty-five yuan?" Jiang Yang rubbed his temples in frustration.
Mother Jiang’s pupils dilated at the number. "Twenty-five? What kind of dress costs that much? Just a few scraps of fabric?"
Well, the twenty-five-yuan dress was indeed now just a few scraps of fabric!
After her shock, Mother Jiang resumed defending her grandsons. Even if that were the case, it wasn’t their fault—who knew a single dress could cost twenty-five yuan?
It was all because of that vixen!
Mother Jiang lashed out at Lin Shu. "Who gave you permission to squander our family’s money like this? Who told you to buy such an expensive dress?"
Lin Shu shot back defiantly, "That's my own money! I'll spend it how I please—none of your business!"
