Chapter 341: Noise – The Daily Life of the Sickly Aunt in the Courtyard
by 苓菱子Chapter 341: The Commotion—Everyday Squabbles of the Delicate Younger Aunt in the Compound
After being oppressed by her mother-in-law and stepson for two years, Lin Shu finally saw a glimmer of hope when she learned that the Li family was dividing the family property.
Even today’s quarrel was something she had planned herself—she simply couldn’t bear her previous life any longer.
Or perhaps it was that her dissatisfaction had reached its peak.
And there was one more thing supporting her actions: she was pregnant.
Yes, that’s right. After two years of marriage, she was finally pregnant, and at last, she had the confidence to fight back.
“I said I won’t do it, and that’s final! Why should I?” Lin Shu shouted angrily.
“Ah~ Sister-in-law Jiang, I really didn’t mean it. It’s just that Bao’s throwing a tantrum right now, and I truly don’t have time for anything else. You see~” Sister-in-law Jiang said, blaming herself.
“Ha! That’s your only move, and you’ve been using it for a whole year. Aren’t you tired of it?”
Sister-in-law Jiang blinked innocently. *What are you talking about? I don’t understand.*
Lin Qing, who had just snapped out of her daze after noticing Su Shengnan’s momentary distraction, saw Sister-in-law Jiang’s expression.
Honestly, Lin Qing found the past two years quite fascinating. At first, she thought Sister-in-law Jiang was someone with rather shallow scheming skills. But after giving birth, she had somehow turned into a fake innocent?
Of course, this temporary innocent act was oddly time-limited—it only appeared in front of Mother Jiang or when facing off against Lin Shu.
Since these situations usually happened in the compound, Lin Qing had witnessed it countless times over the past year. Seeing it again still felt entertaining.
“Sister-in-law, I really didn’t mean it. You’ve misunderstood me~”
“Ha! Heh~ Hehe~ We had a deal—once I got pregnant, all the household chores would be yours. What gives you the right to refuse now?”
Sister-in-law Jiang stiffened. “What do you mean? You’re pregnant?”
Lin Shu immediately tilted her head up defiantly. “That’s right. I’m pregnant, so the housework is your responsibility now.” After nearly two years, she was done with this life.
With that, Lin Shu turned and went back to her room, paying no attention to the gaping Mother Jiang and Sister-in-law Jiang.
“Oldest sister-in-law, did she just say she’s pregnant?”
Though Sister-in-law Jiang was reluctant to admit it, Lin Shu had indeed said so. “Yes.”
“Excellent! Wonderful!” Mother Jiang repeated three times, clearly pleased. At the very least, this proved Lin Shu could have kids after all—something she had worried about for the past two years. Even though her second son already had two children, she still felt it wasn’t enough. More kids, more luck.
“Since she’s pregnant, make dinner tonight!” Mother Jiang said brightly, her demeanor completely different from the cold expression she had worn moments earlier with Lin Shu.
Over the past two years, Mother Jiang had barely smiled at Lin Shu, mainly because Lin Shu had never handed over her salary and blew her money, with little of it going toward her grandson. That had been a major point of dissatisfaction.
But now that Lin Shu was pregnant, once the child was born, surely her salary would finally be spent on the baby, right?
Thinking this, Mother Jiang perked up a bit. After giving Sister-in-law Jiang her orders, she headed back to her room to share the good news with her husband.
Sister-in-law Jiang’s eyes gleamed. Hearing the crying from inside the room, she suddenly saw an opportunity and quickly said, “Mom, Mom, Bao’s crying. I need to go comfort him. Could you make dinner tonight?” Without waiting for a response, she hurried back to her room.
*What the hell?*
*Her? Make dinner?*
*She must have a death wish!*
"Lao Er's wife, have you lost your mind?" Mother Jiang immediately shouted angrily.
Lin Qing flinched and hurriedly finished her meal, then slipped back into her room.
She’d learned from experience that when Mother Jiang got angry after her daughters-in-law retreated to their rooms, she’d start yelling, and if her rant wasn’t over, anyone still outside would suffer the consequences.
Mother Gu also enjoyed this kind of spectacle. Whenever Mother Jiang wasn’t done scolding, she’d start sniping at Mother Gu with veiled insults. If Lin Qing didn’t retreat in time, she’d be next.
She knew because she’d been through it before. But whenever Mother Jiang turned on her, Lin Qing wouldn’t argue back. She’d press a hand to her chest and give Mother Jiang a pitiful look, who would immediately stop.
She had to stop—otherwise, she’d be on the hook for damages!
"Honey, Mom, what’s the problem now?" Jiang Hai asked as his wife rushed back into the room.
His wife didn’t hold back. "Mom wanted me to make dinner, but I heard Bao crying, so I hurried in to comfort him. So I left her to make dinner."
"What?" Jiang Hai knew his wife sometimes used Bao as an excuse to avoid chores, but he didn’t mind. If there was an easy way out, why not take it?
"What about Lao Er's wife? Why isn’t she cooking?"
"She said she’s pregnant," his wife replied, her face darkening.
"Pregnant? So suddenly?"
"Humph! She announced it on purpose today, trying to make me wait on her. Well, I won’t!"
"Then don’t. Honestly, Lao Er's family always gets the better deal. Mom dotes on those two from the second branch, giving them all the good food, acting like they’re being abused by a stepmother." Jiang Hai was also dissatisfied with this. Even though Bao was also a boy, his mother never favored him as much.
"Exactly. When will your mom finally agree to divide the family?" His wife was frustrated. She’d been stirring the pot since her pregnancy, thinking Mother Jiang and Lin Shu would eventually give in and suggest splitting the family. But after nearly two years, nothing had changed.
Still, she felt it might happen soon.
Jiang Hai said nothing. He also wanted to split the family. Most of his paycheck went to the household, leaving him strapped for cash. Whenever he wanted to buy something for Bao, he felt strapped. Now he got why his wife was so eager to split.
"Go take care of Bao. Forget about Mom."
"Okay!" His wife knew her husband was on her side.
Meanwhile, Lin Shu had also returned to her room.
"Why are you back? Weren’t you supposed to make dinner?"
"Ha! I’ve got great news!" Lin Shu ignored his question and smiled.
"What great news?"
"I’m pregnant!"
"Are you serious?"
"Of course! Now we’ll have two kids!" Lin Shu stroked her belly, glowing with motherly pride.
Jiang Yang was so touched he dropped the subject.
"Sit down, sit down! You need to rest!" He quickly helped Lin Shu sit.
The mood between them softened into something tender.
Mother Jiang was left shouting into the void, forgotten by both couples.
