Chapter 308: Pretty Lucky – Daily Melon Eating in the Courtyard of the Sickly Young Lady
by 苓菱子Chapter 308: Pretty Good Luck – The Sickly Young Aunt’s Compound Gossip Diary
"Wow, it's really far!" Lin Qing sighed from the back seat of Cen Xi's bicycle.
"Yep." Cen Xi also thought it was quite a distance. They had been riding for nearly two hours before finally catching sight of the outskirts’ hills.
Lin Qing's father followed closely behind them. She turned to look back and asked, "Mom, do you ride this far every time?"
"Nah, it’s only two hours—that’s nothing!" Mother Lin genuinely felt it wasn't that far.
"Mom, does Mother Li always tote both of you on her bike when you come here?"
"Yeah, Mother Li’s tough. It's steadier when she carries both of us." Mother Lin recalled their previous trips.
Lin Qing frowned slightly. "Mother Li must be beat. Toting two people for over two hours is really exhausting." She could tell that even Cen Xi was a bit beat after riding alone for two hours.
Not to mention under the hot sun. Though it was already autumn and not as scorching, riding for so long still made them sweat.
"Ah, you don’t know—she loves it! She often boasts to us that the young ones in our compound probably don’t ride bicycles as much as she does!" Mother Lin laughed.
"Really?" Lin Qing suddenly felt she might have overthought it. Maybe Mother Li truly found joy in it.
"Alright then! Just make sure to ride safely next time. It’s fine to go slower."
"Yeah, yeah." Mother Lin thought her daughter was starting to sound nagging.
Seeing her mother wasn’t keen on listening, Lin Qing stopped after a couple more reminders.
"Mom, where are we heading now?" Lin Qing switched gears.
Cen Xi and Lin Qing's father waited, bikes in hand.
Mother Lin looked around. To the left was a slope, and to the right was the forest they had visited before.
"How about we hit up that slope first? We’ve never been there before."
"Sure!" The others had no complaints.
So the group pushed their bicycles up the slope on the left. It was quite high, but covered mostly in grass with few trees, making the view open—probably why they hadn’t considered going there before.
But since they were just here to hang out today and didn’t necessarily expect any gains, they decided to see what’s out there. Who knew? They might find something cool!
"Phew~ The slope looks steep, but the path is actually pretty gentle." Lin Qing caught her breath after reaching the top.
"Yeah." It was indeed smooth. Pushing the bike up wasn’t bad.
"Mom!" Lin Qing noticed her mother squinting ahead. "Did you find something?"
"Come on, let’s get a better look over there." Mother Lin pointed toward another hilltop.
"Mom, is there something there?"
"A rainbow? Where?"
"There, see? Just a faint streak."
"Oh, you’re right!" Lin Qing perked up now.
Cen Xi was baffled, "How’s there a rainbow over there? The air is pretty dry!" He didn’t feel any humidity—so how could there be a rainbow?
Lin’s dad, noticing his daughter’s excitement, quickly urged everyone forward, "Let’s get moving!"
They soon climbed to the top of the slope mentioned earlier. As soon as Lin Qing reached it, she let out a gasp, "Wow!"
"What is it?" Cen Xi hurried over.
"Brother Nan, check it out!" Lin Qing grabbed Cen Xi's arm, "There’s a small lake down there, so vibrant—it’s gorgeous!"
Seeing the lake, Cen Xi stopped questioning the rainbow.
The lake’s water, heated by the sun, created steam that formed a rainbow—it made perfect sense.
Lin’s parents followed behind them. They weren’t thinking about the view.
"Old man, do you think there are fish in this lake?" Being a homemaker, Lin’s mom thought first of food.
"Let’s go down and check." They were pumped.
The slope was gentle as they went down. By the time they reached the lakeside, the surrounding area was flat, so they simply parked their bicycles nearby.
"This lake’s tucked away!" At least when Lin’s mom first saw that barren slope covered only in grass, she’d never have guessed to come here. Who would have known that after crossing two slopes, a lake would be hiding in this hollow?
The four of them crouched by the lake, watching sunlight dance on the water.
"Wow, the water is so clear! Fish—there are fish! I see one, and it’s huge!" Lin Qing hissed in excitement.
She immediately covered her mouth, afraid that speaking any louder might scare the fish away.
The four of them stared eagerly at the fish but were at a loss. They had only brought baskets and sacks—no fishing gear. They were practically drooling, but they had no way to reel them in.
"How deep is the lake?" Lin Qing asked the question they all wanted answered.
"It doesn’t look deep. After all, this is basically a big puddle," Cen Xi recalled his geography lessons. "This water either formed from rainfall or from an underground river we don’t know about. The low-lying terrain here created this little lake."
Lin Qing’s eyes lit up, "So, is it deep?"
Cen Xi himself didn’t know how low the basin was. Only one way to find out—test it.
"See any sticks?" Using a stick was the safest method.
"A stick?" Lin Qing glanced around, "There don’t seem to be any here."
Cen Xi stood up. "Young and fast, I’m the obvious choice—I’ll go back to the hillside to look."
"Alright!"
Everyone nodded—the older and weaker members weren’t suited for the task.
Cen Xi was indeed fast. He returned shortly, "Scored a long stick right off." He held up the stick to show them.
No way! Did he just grab this?
The stick was neither too thick nor too thin, and its length was perfect for measuring the lake’s depth.
"Hurry, try it!" Lin’s father was already impatient.
"Easy there, old man!" Lin’s mother found it amusing as she watched him eagerly waving the stick around.
There's nothing special about this stick. Why are you way too happy just holding it?
"Heh!" Father Lin also felt he might have gotten a bit too excited and restrained himself. "I just wanna check how deep the water is so we can fish!"
"Oh! Then go ahead!"
"Alright, I'll try now!"
"Come on, hurry up!" Mother Lin could barely stand to watch—he was in such a rush earlier, but now he's dragging his feet.
Lin Qing and Cen Xi watched them from behind, covering their mouths to hide their laughter.
