Chapter 45 A Shift in Perspective

Hearing Su He comment on her grandson being chubby again, Chen Shufen got upset.

She immediately turned to Fu Tinghua, standing behind them, and asked, "By the way, Ting Hua, your wife was saying last time that being too fat can cause a lot of diseases—is that true?"

Impressed she was aware of this, Fu Tinghua glanced at Su He, surprised by her knowledge.

In this era, obesity wasn’t seen as shameful—it was even a symbol of wealth, especially for boys. Parents often wished their grandsons to be chubby and rosy-cheeked.

Few considered the health complications that could arise from obesity, yet Su He had noticed. Was it because she’d been unwell lately? Was that why she had lost weight so quickly?

"Yes, being overweight can lead to many illnesses. I suggest you don’t feed Tie Zhu so much in the future. If he stretches his stomach, he’ll have a harder time feeling satisfied later, and losing weight will be even harder," Fu Tinghua answered honestly.

Seeing that Fu Tinghua’s words aligned almost exactly with what Su He had said before, Chen Shufen got flustered again.

She watched as her grandson, already a pro at this, picked up his chopsticks to search for meat in the mushroom chicken dish. She saw red.

Snatching the chopsticks from her chubby grandson, she scolded, "You just ate! No more snacks!"

Tie Zhu refused to comply. He had just tasted a mushroom—it was like nothing he’d ever tasted.

"Gramma, lemme eat!" Tie Zhu protested, fussing while being dragged off.

"Eat, eat, all you think about is eating! From now on, you’re going to lose weight properly. Did you sneak candy again last night?" Chen Shufen went off on him, not caring they were in someone else’s house.

"Grandma, grandma!" Tie Zhu whined as he was dragged away, unwilling to leave when there was still food on the table.

Chen Shufen then turned to Fu Tinghua and said, "Ting Hua, I’ll be heading back now."

Fu Tinghua smiled politely. "Alright, take care."

As they watched Chen Shufen’s retreating figure, they both exhaled.

After a moment, Su He and Fu Tinghua exchanged glances and couldn’t help but snort laughing.

"Your aunt’s a handful," Su He remarked.

If Fu Tinghua dared to disagree, Su He would immediately bring up his mother. After all, because of Chen Shufen, his parents had faced several rough patches.

"Yeah, she’s always been like this—ever since I was little," Fu Tinghua replied with a chuckle before adding, "But you sure know how to deal with her. My mother mentioned it before."

Su He felt a little exasperated at his words. Probably the only good impression she had left on her mother-in-law was her ability to stand up to this aunt.

"Mom, mom, you haven’t said—will we have chicken for dinner tonight?" Ever-hungry Niu Niu tugged at Su He’s pants and asked again.

"Yes, yes, if our Niu Niu wants it, Mom will make it again tonight, okay?"

Su He crouched down, picked up her adorable daughter, and hefted her, nodding in satisfaction. "Our Niu Niu has filled out!"

After setting Niu Niu down, she lifted Zai Zai and hefted him too, nodding in satisfaction. "Zai Zai has also filled out."

"After seeing them yesterday, I mentioned they looked like they’d gained some," Fu Tinghua piped up.

"Did you? Maybe I didn’t hear. By the way, I plan to visit my durian tree this afternoon," Su He said, looking at Fu Tinghua.

"Alright, I’ll go with you. I’m quite interested in this ‘durian’ you talk about."

This kid's dad seems kinda clingy, doesn't he?

But he probably isn't clinging to me, right? Maybe he just dropped by out of boredom?

"Alright, we'll head out once the kids nap."

Hearing that their mom was taking them up the mountain to play, the two kids were thrilled.

They were inseparable from their mother now. Su He took them everywhere, which made them even happier.

Zhuang Zhuang's crew had said that their own parents were usually very busy, so they were mostly raised by their grandma.

But Zai Zai and Niu Niu didn’t want to stay with their grandma—she was swamped with other kids, while their mom always put them first.

Counting the time, Su He had inhabited this body for almost a month now.

In less than a month, she had made the two kids so crazy about her, which showed just how well she treated them.

At noon, Su He napped with the two kids in their room, while Fu Tinghua didn’t rest. Taking advantage of the free time, he walked through the fields.

The place was pretty much how he remembered it from childhood, except that many of the village houses were now brick houses. Everything else was exactly as he recalled.

Actually, before returning, Fu Tinghua had made up his mind—he would ask Su He for a divorce as soon as he got back.

Divorce in this era was a huge deal, whether for men or women.

But he was done with Su He. Before leaving, he had asked someone to have her watched.

Two months ago, he received a letter from a colleague saying that Su He had gambled away the money he gave her and had even fled her workplace housing after stealing, and now she's gone missing.

Back in those days, if someone disappeared, it was very hard to find them.

Besides, most of his colleagues and friends had their own lives—they couldn’t just drop everything to help him search.

Fu Tinghua had once thought that as long as Su He could take good care of the two kids, he could tolerate staying with her.

Her father had his back, and out of gratitude, he couldn’t bring himself to betray that.

But Fu Tinghua never expected Su He to go this far—gambling.

He didn’t believe the theft accusation, but wouldn’t a gambler steal for money?

Worried about the children, he pulled strings to come home early.

Even though he came back ahead of schedule, the state still gave him top honors. When he returned to the hospital, he was set to become deputy director and surgical specialist.

With a higher position, he wouldn’t be as busy as before—unless it was a particularly difficult surgery.

So Fu Tinghua also considered that once he had more free time to take care of the kids, he would divorce Su He. Otherwise, leaving the children in her hands would surely mess them up for good.

But what Fu Tinghua didn’t expect was that after returning, Su He’s behavior completely blew him away.

She had raised the two kids well, and the house was kept spotless.

Most importantly, his family’s opinion of Su He had completely changed—they even urged him to make things work with her.

So Fu Tinghua changed his mind again. He didn’t care whether Su He had reformed because of some major upheaval.

As long as she could change, he was still willing to forgive her.

What Fu Tinghua didn’t know was that while he no longer intended to divorce, Su He had been scheming to leave him—and take full custody of the children.
