Chapter 70: Dividing Chicken Legs
by 范氏女子Chapter 70: Dividing the Chicken Legs
Su He's call of "Dinner's ready!" brought the kids back to reality. The delicious smell had already reached them, and they immediately rushed into the kitchen.
Ms. Zhou followed the children inside and saw Su He putting the last dish on plates. She went to the cupboard to fetch bowls for scooping rice.
Though the kitchen furniture was old, it was spotless. Ms. Zhou couldn’t help but admire Su He even more. A person this careful in every aspect of life would surely succeed in anything they set their mind to.
After placing all the dishes on the table, Su He noticed her guest scooping rice and quickly said, "I'll get that."
Ms. Zhou quickly said no.
"You should rest. I can handle scooping rice."
Su He smiled and explained, "Oh, it’s not that—there’s soup too. Would you like to have some soup before the meal?"
Ms. Zhou slapped her forehead. How could she have forgotten?
She grabbed the bowls again and went to the table to serve soup for the children.
The chicken in the soup was tender and flavorful—Su He’s cooking was simply amazing.
"Mommy, this soup is really good!" Niu Niu said excitedly.
"I’m glad you like it. There’s plenty more."
Ji Liangchuan was also enjoying the soup, too busy eating to talk.
Niu Niu picked up a piece of chicken from the mushroom chicken dish and placed it in Ji Liangchuan’s bowl, her eyes shining. "Brother Chuan, try my mom's mushroom chicken! It’s really good!"
Su He couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight. Her little Niu Niu was such a little charmer.
A whole chicken had two large drumsticks and two small ones, leaving Su He unsure how to split them up fairly.
She decided to let the children decide for themselves.
"Okay, kids. A chicken has two big drumsticks and two small ones. There are three of you—who wants the two small drumsticks instead of a big one?"
Ms. Zhou was amazed. Even something as simple as splitting up chicken legs was discussed openly with the children.
"I’ll take the two small drumsticks. The big ones can go to the younger ones," Ji Liangchuan offered.
"Mom, give the big drumsticks to Brother Chuan and Niu Niu. I like the small ones," Zai Zai said seriously, sounding very grown-up.
"I’m the smallest and eat the least. I can have two small drumsticks," Niu Niu added.
Seeing how considerate the children were, Su He and Ms. Zhou felt so proud.
"Since everyone’s willing to give up the big drumsticks, let’s decide with rock-paper-scissors," Su He suggested with a smile.
Rock-paper-scissors? That sounds fun!
Su He showed them how to play, explaining that whoever won would get the two small drumsticks.
In the end, Niu Niu won. She was thrilled and proud.
"Mama, Mama, I won!" she exclaimed excitedly.
"Yes, yes, Niu Niu is *the* best! Everyone's such good kids, willing to give up the big chicken legs."
As Su He spoke, she placed the chicken legs into each child's bowl.
"Mommy, I think chicken is the most delicious."
Little foodie Niu Niu had been looking forward to this mushroom chicken ever since she'd had it that one time.
Once they’d all eaten their fill, the rain indeed stopped.
Originally, Ji Liangchuan wanted to ask Zai Zai to take him up the mountain to play, but the rain-soaked woods were most prone to insects and snakes, so both moms refused.
"Play a little longer, then it's nap time. We can go out in the afternoon, okay?" Su He patiently advised the children.
The midday sun was blazing, around one or two o'clock, with the sun blazed overhead, mercilessly pouring its warmth onto the earth.
With the recent rain gone, the air in the fields carried a fresh, earthy scent that lifted their moods. Even more delightful, a vibrant rainbow appeared on the horizon, like a bridge connecting heaven and earth.
This rainbow was a burst of colors, from red to purple, too stunning to ignore. Its appearance seemed to revive the plants, which thrived under the light, showcasing their vitality.
"Mommy, a rainbow!"
Zai Zai spotted this gorgeous sight and immediately called out excitedly to Su He.
The others, seeing this, also turned to look toward the front of the house.
"Wow~" Niu Niu and Ji Liangchuan both gasped.
Nothing beats nature’s beauty.
Su He, too, rarely saw such a beautiful scene and couldn’t look away.
Too bad—without a phone or camera, this gorgeous sight couldn't be captured.
Yet years later, this moment would leave a lasting memory in the minds of all five present.
After the children had fallen asleep side by side in bed, Ms. Zhou stood up to leave.
"Are you leaving? Should I wake Liangchuan?" Su He asked.
"No need. Let him stay and play here for the day. I'll come pick him up tomorrow."
Ms. Zhou said sheepishly before adding, "While you weren’t looking, Chuan kept begging me to let him stay another day.
Ms. Su, ever since my grandson was sent to me, he's been down in the dumps every day.
Could he stay at your place one more day? No need to fuss over him—just give him a meal."
Before Su He could respond, Ms. Zhou slipped twenty yuan into her hand.
"No need, what are you doing?" Su He quickly tried to return it.
"Ms. Su, I’m afraid I might trouble you more than just this once, so please accept it," Ms. Zhou said earnestly.
Seeing that Ms. Zhou wouldn’t take no for an answer, Su He reluctantly accepted it.
"I’ll save it for treats when Liangchuan visits," Su He said with a smile.
At this, Ms. Zhou finally let out a sigh of relief.
After watching Su He all morning, she was confident in her character, which was why she dared to leave her grandson in Su He's care.
When she stepped back into the room and saw Ji Liangchuan fast asleep next to Niu Niu, Ms. Zhou’s gaze softened with tenderness.
Ah well, her grandson’s childhood was fleeting—why not humor him a bit and let him reclaim his childlike innocence?
When Ms. Zhou drove off, the kids were out cold, completely unaware.
Su He looked around at the villagers, now gone from the fields, then closed the main gate and went to another room for her nap.
As she lay in bed, Su He checked out her arms—now noticeably slimmer than before—and couldn’t help but feel satisfied.
It felt like forever since she’d logged into the space forum. The flower she and the two kids had dug up on the mountain last time had been placed in the space and then completely forgotten.
Su He entered the system, took a photo of the flower, and posted it on the space forum.
Something told her this flower might be super rare and could sell for a pretty penny.
