Chapter 117 Picking Durians
by 范氏女子Chapter 117 Harvesting Durians
"Wow, I've folded another one! Auntie, look how pretty my dumpling is!" Zhuang Zhuang was extremely pleased with his masterpiece and insisted that Su He take a look.
"Mm-hmm, great job! Keep it up."
"Mom, mom, what about mine?" Zai Zai wasn't about to be left behind.
"All of you did great, but only wrap what you can finish—you have to eat the dumplings you make," Su He reminded them.
"Mom, I want to fold some for you to eat," Niu Niu said, looking at Su He with an expression just waiting for praise.
Su He thought... Thanks, but that really isn’t necessary.
After lunch, Zhuang Zhuang and the others went home on their own, leaving Su He alone with her three kids, bringing back the peace and quiet.
Once she finished cleaning the kitchen, she herded the three kids off for their nap.
Perhaps because they had been too excited from playing earlier, the kids put up some resistance about going to bed.
After Su He left the room, Ji Liangchuan couldn't help but say to Zai Zai and Niu Niu, "I wish Auntie Su was my mom too."
"Hmph, you just want to steal our mom," Zai Zai snorted.
"If I became your older brother, I’d punch anyone who tries to bully you."
"Brother Liangchuan, can’t you help us now?" Niu Niu suddenly asked.
Ji Liangchuan... Of course, if anyone dared to bully Zai Zai and Niu Niu now, he'd totally help.
This question troubled Ji Liangchuan until, as he grew older, he realized there actually was a way.
In the afternoon, when the sun wasn't so harsh, Su He took the kids up the mountain.
The durians she had been tending to since her transmigration were finally ready to pick.
First things first—she wasn't going to miss out. She’d pick a few to enjoy first.
Bouncing with excitement to be heading up the mountain again, Ji Liangchuan was practically glowing.
Last time, he had done exactly what Su He asked and found lots of mushrooms.
As they neared the mountainside, Su He got a whiff of durian in the air.
Meanwhile, Zai Zai pinched his nose and frowned. "Mom, what's that stink?"
Well, Zai Zai, it looks like you aren't cut out for enjoying the King of Fruits.
"That’s the smell of durian."
Zai Zai: ......
"Mom, I think it smells really nice," Niu Niu said, taking big sniffs.
The other two little boys silently moved a bit farther away from her.
"Try it later and see if you like it." Su He patted her daughter's head and said.
"Yay, I can’t wait to try it!" Niu Niu was overjoyed.
Hmph, those dumb brothers don’t know what’s good. Mom won’t let them eat any.
When they arrived under the durian tree, Su He looked up and saw, wow, every durian tree was densely covered with durians.
The space system wasn’t kidding—this harvest was insane.
"Stay here—I’ll grab the durians." Su He put down her basket and said.
Looking at the tall durian tree, Zai Zai was very worried.
"Mom, maybe wait for Dad? It’s too high and dangerous."
"It’s fine. Mom can reach them." Su He said confidently.
After preparing, Su He leaped up, kicked off one tree, and quickly climbed onto a durian tree.
She’d checked this tree—the durians were perfectly ripe.
When she climbed high enough, Su He called out to the kids, "Zai Zai, Liangchuan, hand me that pole."
Hearing her, the two boys immediately worked together to pass the long pole to Su He.
Once she had the pole, she jabbed it at the durian.
When the durian wobbled, she hit the switch, and the net snapped shut around the durian.
She yanked hard, and the durian thudded into the net.
Thankfully, Su He was strong enough—otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to handle the durian’s weight, and the pole would’ve slipped.
"Get Niu Niu back!" Su He called from the tree.
Hearing her, Zai Zai and Ji Liangchuan immediately pulled Niu Niu and ran far away.
"Go hunt for mushrooms—stay clear of here."
Su He shouted, then turned off the net’s switch.
Once the net retracted, the durian didn’t even bruise as it fell steadily to the ground.
It wasn’t a big drop, and Su He eased it down.
Su He repeated this method to pick several more durians before moving to another tree.
She kept a few out and stashed the rest in her space.
The kids did as they were told and scoured the ground for mushrooms.
Ji Liangchuan came through, finding a whole new mushroom spot.
Zai Zai, sharp as ever, gave them a once-over and pointed at the ones Mom usually picks, saying, "Only these ones—skip the rest. Mom says some mushrooms are toxic, so we have to wait for her to check before picking."
When Su He decided she’d picked enough and went to find the kids, she found a giant mushroom pile the kids had stacked up.
"Wow, you guys are amazing! You found so many mushrooms again," Su He said happily.
Many types of mushrooms among them could be traded for credits in the system.
"Mom, it was Brother Liangchuan who found them," Niu Niu said.
"Wow, Liangchuan did great!"
Receiving Su He's praise, Ji Liangchuan got all shy.
By the time they came down from the mountain, the sun was almost setting.
With their haul, Su He took the three kids home.
There definitely wasn’t enough time to butcher a chicken today.
So Su He whipped up two dishes for dinner, then headed out with the kids and durians to the Fu family in the village.
Along the way, they encountered many women shooting the breeze after supper. Su He couldn’t help but think of the scene where a college student returns to the village and would chicken out walking past such a crowd.
At this point, even a dog passing by would get the third degree.
But who did they think Su He was? She wasn’t afraid of being gossiped about.
If she hadn’t had thick skin in her past life, she wouldn’t have risen to that executive position.
She walked straight through the crowd of women with her kids. When they saw Su He, the gossip came to a screeching halt.
Under the gaze of the crowd, Su He walked like she owned the place, even greeting some familiar faces.
Only after she had walked far away did the onlookers finally go back to their gossip.
"Was that person just now Ting Hua’s wife?"
"That’s right."
"She... she’s become, become so pretty?"
"She was never ugly, just carried some extra weight. Now that she’s slimmed down, no wonder she's looking fine."
"Come on, she was downright homely before!" someone retorted.
Then they suddenly realized no one dared to agree with her.
"Oh dear, sister, you've got guts still running your mouth? She’s fought with two families in the village—and won both times."
