Chapter 79: Worries After Rapid Weight Loss
by 范氏女子Chapter 79: Worries Over Drastic Weight Loss
After Ms. Zhou's car drove away, Fu Tinghua turned to Su He and asked hesitantly, "You... are you going to town to do business now?"
"Huh? Oh, right, yes." Su He nodded at Fu Tinghua with a smile.
Seeing her smile at him, Fu Tinghua uncomfortably averted his gaze and said, "Are you running short on money? The other part of my military allowance will be issued next week. I’ll give it to you then."
Su He: ...
Wait, didn’t he just give her three hundred yuan last week? Why would he think she spent it so quickly?
Three hundred yuan was a fortune in those days. There's no way she could've spent it all in the countryside.
But Fu Tinghua didn’t see it that way. He had observed the household’s daily necessities—from the milk he just saw to the quilt he slept under last time, everything was different from before.
Considering Su He had always lived in the city, naturally she spent money differently than he did.
Fu Tinghua wasn’t asking her to save money. After all, the kids had been painfully thin before, and now Su He had brought them back to health.
His salary had also increased significantly, and he was confident he could support the whole family.
But seeing Su He’s increasingly gaunt figure, he genuinely feared she was overworking herself, which might lead to illness.
To his surprise, Su He replied, "I’m not short on money. I haven’t even spent the three hundred yuan you gave me last time. It’s just that I don’t have to farm or do much work now, so I thought of some ways to earn extra money and help out the family a little."
"But the speed at which you’ve lost weight seems... abnormal."
Fu Tinghua frowned deeply, growing more convinced that something might be wrong with Su He’s health.
As a doctor, he had never seen anyone lose weight so rapidly unless they had a terminal illness.
"How about tomorrow? Come back to the city with me, and I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up." The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt, so he decided to take Su He for a medical examination.
Su He: ...
She didn’t know why she had lost weight so quickly either.
Every day, she seemed to experience endless sweating, yet she felt more energetic by the day.
Su He believed her weight loss wasn’t due to illness—perhaps it was a benefit of her rebirth, or maybe her body's original weight had been too high, and now that she was active, her metabolism had sped up, leading to rapid weight loss.
But seeing the worry written all over Fu Tinghua’s face, she couldn’t bring herself to say no.
It wasn’t just him—the Fu family had also mentioned that she was losing weight too quickly, almost unnaturally, and asked if she felt unwell.
Fine. To set their minds at ease, she might as well get checked.
"Alright. Don’t come back next week. I’ll bring Zai Zai and Niu Niu to the city to see you. And—get the check-up done. Should I come Thursday? Or Friday?" Su He asked.
"Thursday. Then on Friday, I’ll arrange a full-body examination for you. Many tests aren't available on Saturdays, so it’s best to get all the tests done at once," Fu Tinghua replied.
Though Su He had become much slimmer and prettier now, Fu Tinghua didn’t want it to come at the cost of her health.
So he advised, "Don't starve yourself just to lose weight—it’ll harm your health."
"I’m eating normally now. My stomach was stretched before, but now I’m just eating a regular amount."
Seeing the certainty in Su He’s tone and expression, Fu Tinghua swallowed his words.
However, if Su He successfully loses weight, Wu Yanhua from the Fu family would probably be the happiest.
After all, she always felt that Su He’s appearance was just okay. If she could become a little prettier, she’d be a better match for her son.
During some downtime, Su He went to check on the vegetable garden in the backyard.
The melon seeds she had planted earlier had grown melons. Su He thought she could pick two small ones today to stir-fry into melon strips.
The last time they had this dish was when Aunt Niu gave them two melons, allowing them to enjoy a special treat.
Fu Tinghua, who had quietly followed her, walked around the garden and asked, “Did you plant all this yourself?”
“Yes. Back then, we didn’t have any vegetables at home, so I thought I’d grow some myself.”
Fu Tinghua lowered his head, looking at the small patch of chili peppers beside him, and said, “That must have been hard work.”
Su He was squatting on the ground, searching for the larger melons. Without turning to look at him, she replied, “Well, it was tiring at first, but I got used to it.”
After saying this, she turned to Fu Tinghua and gave him a beaming smile, adding, “I’ll stir-fry some melon strips for lunch today. They’re really delicious.”
Seeing the faint dimples on Su He’s face, Fu Tinghua’s ears grew warm again.
Afraid she might notice, he quickly stood up and simply replied, “Mm.”
By the time the two of them came out, Zai Zai and Niu Niu had disappeared.
“They probably went to play with Zhuang Zhuang and the others. Are you going to the Fu family later?” Su He asked.
“I went last night.”
Meaning he didn’t need to go today.
Su He felt a little disappointed. Having such a big guy—and such a handsome one at that—constantly hovering around her was strangely uncomfortable.
These two kids were being rude today. Their father had just come home, yet they ran off instead of spending more time with him.
Su He thought to herself.
But what she didn’t know was that Zai Zai, the story's future villain, was pretty sharp. Even at just over three years old, he understood that his parents needed time alone, so he and Niu Niu naturally couldn’t get in the way.
Earlier, while their parents were in the garden, Zai Zai had quietly told his innocent little sister, “Let’s go play with Zhuang Zhuang and the others.”
Niu Niu didn’t want to. Their father was so handsome and smelled so good—she liked staying by his side.
Besides, she was stuck to her mother like glue and didn’t want to leave her either.
“No, no! I want to stay with Mommy and Daddy,” Niu Niu said unhappily.
“Don’t you want Mommy and Daddy to stay together forever?”
“Why would Mommy and Daddy ever separate?” Niu Niu asked, confused.
“If they don’t have feelings for each other, they’ll split up,” Zai Zai said solemnly.
“Then I don’t want them to separate!”
Niu Niu completely didn’t understand. To be honest, in the novel, her intelligence wasn’t particularly high—she was more of a sweet but simple character.
Between the two siblings, Zai Zai had eight hundred one schemes up his sleeve, while Niu Niu had zero cunning.
In the story, as the antagonist’s sister who liked the male lead, Niu Niu’s attempts to outsmart the female lead never succeeded—her plans always backfired on her.
So, when it came to her not-the-sharpest daughter, Su He always humored her.
To Su He, whether in the novel or in reality, Niu Niu was just an adorable little girl—not bad at all.
