Chapter 296: By a Stroke of Luck, Escaped Several Calamities

Hearing his words, Fu Yanju's heart couldn't help but skip a beat.
Was Su He's shop really on their radar?
"It's alright, don’t worry. We'll keep an eye on this place from now on. If anyone dares to cause trouble again, we’ll come down hard on them," the junior officer quickly reassured Fu Yanju.
The shop owner’s sister—wasn’t she Dr. Fu’s sister? He'd better stay on her good side.
"Thank you so much for your help," Fu Yanju quickly thanked them.
"Don't mention it, it’s our duty."
Eavesdroppers caught every word of their conversation.
That settled it—this shop definitely had pull. Better not mess with them.
Those watching from a distance traded looks and quietly retreated from the scene.
"Boss, maybe we should just drop it? Let’s not target this shop’s goods. They seem to have people in the police department. Otherwise, the response wouldn’t have been so quick. Pissing off someone with connections could land us in deep trouble."
A group of people huddled together, discussing the incident at Su He’s shop.
They were professional thieves, specializing in expensive, valuable goods.
Su He’s durians had been on their hit list for weeks.
They even knew the transportation routes and schedules for the durians.
They had planned to strike in the next couple of days, but who knew something like this would happen?
Someone had beaten them to it.
But the outcome was clear—a complete bust.
And those thieves had probably been watching the shop for a while before making their move. Yet they got nailed immediately.
First-timers, and they were already busted.
If this wasn’t a sign of having serious connections, they couldn’t figure out how else they’d been caught so fast.
Folks these days would never in a million years guess that Su He even had something like sensors.
"Yeah, boss. I heard Wencheng’s been coming down hard lately. If we get caught, we could be doing ten-plus years."
"Right, let’s just pass on this one? The risk is too high. We can hit somewhere else."
The guy at the center of the group, however, was on the fence.
The main issue was—this shop was too juicy. The temptation was killing him.
Plus, they’d spent over two months observing it. After investing so much time, leaving with nothing to show for it would be a gut punch.
"Let me think about it," the man called "boss" took a long drag off his cigarette, then spoke again.
"Boss, if you’re dead set on this heist, count me out."
"Same here."
"Ditto."
"Boss, drop it. I just remembered—someone mentioned this shop belongs to that doctor who was in the newspaper a while back."
"Huh? Really?"
"Seems true. That doctor even came to help at the shop before. Lots of people saw it."
"Figures. If they made the papers, they must have connections."
"But the newspaper said he was from the countryside," someone muttered weakly.
"Tch, newspapers can write whatever they want. Some hick studying Western medicine? Definitely has connections. I’m bailing too, Boss. Too hot to handle, not worth it."
Seeing everyone back out, what’s the play here?
The boss turned red.
"Screw this! Job’s off!"
"Thank god we got scooped, or we’d be the ones arrested now."
"Who knows? We were just targeting the delivery guy. Maybe we wouldn’t have been caught," the boss shot back.
"They must have backup plans—after all, they’ve got protection up high."
From that day on, Su He was mistakenly believed to have powerful backing.
Her shop was sticking out like a sore thumb. Even nearby grocery stores began banding together, gunning for her shop.
Many saw only two women and an old man running the shop, with no strong young men around, and thought, "This ragtag crew’s muscling in?"
The neighboring shop owners selling similar goods all wanted to shut down Su He’s store—they just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.
Go figure, the theft incident indirectly helped Su He, saving her a world of hurt.
Otherwise, with nonstop heat, her shop wouldn’t have been able to focus on sales—just dealing with troublemakers would’ve kept them busy.
Fu Guoqing was the luckiest of all.
The gang had planned to rob the goods on his truck.
They’d scouted the route, waiting to strike at a remote spot.
But after observing for so long, they suddenly learned the shop had the right connections and had to abandon the plan.
Otherwise, who knows what might’ve happened?
Fu Guoqing had once said he’d plow right through anyone who caused trouble.
But when it actually happened, all bets would’ve been off.
Su He woke up to a whole new ballgame.
Wen Qing was already whipping up breakfast in the kitchen, while the two kids were running around the yard.
"Mom, what brings you here?" Su He asked with a yawn as she walked into the kitchen.
"Oh, you're up already?" Wen Qing looked visibly excited the moment she saw Su He.
"Huh? Wait, what's wrong?" Su He naturally sensed something unusual about Wen Qing.
"Honey, did you catch a thief last night?" Wen Qing asked.
"Yeah, I found out someone was stealing from the shop last night, so I immediately reported it to the police."
"Were you hurt?" Wen Qing quickly asked with concern.
"Pfft, come on, what injuries? It wasn’t us catching the thief—it was the police."
As she spoke, Su He picked up her toothbrush and started squeezing toothpaste onto it.
"Well, there's talk going around that you have serious backing. No one will dare cause trouble at your shop anymore," Wen Qing said meaningfully.
"Huh? How did that rumor even start?" Su He looked completely confused.
"Beats me. As soon as your dad and I got to the shop, someone came up and told us," Wen Qing replied, equally confused.
She knew her son-in-law—just a doctor, and though he'd been in the newspaper, he wasn’t exactly well-connected.
As for the Fu family? They were just ordinary farmers—what connections could they possibly have?
Su He seemed to realize something and burst out laughing.
"What’s so funny?" Wen Qing asked, watching her brush her teeth while giggling, equal parts amused and annoyed.
"It’s nothing, Mom. This works in our favor—let them think what they want," Su He said with a smile.
