"Alright everyone, let’s break it up. Helping others is what good citizens do, but don’t overdo it."
As Su He spoke, she led the two children back into the shop, and the onlookers gradually scattered.
Honestly, people just love drama.
Sure enough, more customers started coming in.
Su Shiming had meant to check on Su He, but the shop was swamped, and he had to return to help Fu Yanju.
"Mom, did you help the police officers defeat the bad guys?" Zai Zai, who had been standing quietly beside Su He, suddenly asked.
"Yes," Su He replied with a smile.
"Mom is amazing! I want to become a police officer too when I grow up, so I can protect you."
Zai Zai’s declaration took her by surprise, and her heart skipped a beat.
Was Zai Zai really set on going to the police academy?
"Zai Zai, whatever you want to do in the future, just go for it. Don’t become a cop just for my sake," Su He suddenly stopped and patiently explained to him.
Zai Zai frowned, confused. "But Mom, I really want to be a good police officer."
Seeing how serious he was, Su He forced a smile and didn’t say anything more.
"Alright, if that’s what you want, then go for it. But if you do, you must do it well—no cutting corners, got it?" If she couldn’t stop it, she’d make sure he did it right!
"Okay, I understand, Mom."
"What are you two talking about?" Su Shiming, getting antsy since Su He was taking so long, couldn’t help but call out.
"Nothing, Dad. You can go back now," Su He said with a smile.
They’d already sold out of durians, so there was no need to help with weighing or anything else.
Even though the shop was buzzing after the police recognized Su He, she could handle it on her own.
"You got harassed last night?" Su Shiming asked sternly.
Like any dad, his only worry was his daughter’s safety—he couldn’t care less about the reward.
"It’s fine, Dad. I can handle myself, don’t worry," Su He replied with a laugh.
"You still need to be careful. It’s not safe closing this late—you shouldn’t walk back alone. Why not wait for Ting Hua before staying open late? Tonight, close early," Su Shiming said worriedly.
Of course, Su He didn’t want him fretting, so she agreed immediately.
Seeing her give in so easily, Su Shiming let out a relieved sigh.
"Alright, I’ll head back now," Su Shiming said, picking up his lunchbox.
"Yeah, go on. Stay safe."
"Goodbye, Grandpa!" Niu Niu chimed in sweetly.
"Bye, sweetheart. See you later, Zai Zai."
After saying goodbye, Su Shiming pedaled home.
"Mom, when will Dad come back?" Niu Niu suddenly asked.
"Hmm... around tomorrow afternoon. Why? Missing Dad?" Su He smiled and asked her daughter.
"Then Mom will sleep with me tonight. I want to hug Mom while sleeping." Niu Niu's adorable tone made Su He chuckle.
"Of course, tonight Mom will hold you while you sleep." After saying this, Su He couldn't resist giving Niu Niu's cheek another pinch.
When business slowed down, Fu Yanju got ready to take Wan Er home for dinner.
She had brought Wan Er to the shop today and had been working all day.
Originally, she wanted to take Zai Zai and Niu Niu back as well for their nap, but the two kids flat-out refused to go home.
"Don't worry, sis, it's fine. They can just stay here with me."
"Alright then. I'll come give you a hand after I finish eating," Fu Yanju said.
"No need, no need. I can manage alone. You should rest a bit," she sighed.
Fu Yanju was really hardworking, truly the life of a workhorse.
The two kids played in the shop, and when Su He had some free time, she grabbed a mat from under the counter, cushioned it with some clothes, and laid it on the floor.
When the kids got tired from playing, they rested right at Su He's feet.
Su He rang up customers while keeping an eye on the two sleeping children.
She had tried to send them home for a nap earlier, but they dug in their heels.
They even claimed they weren't sleepy—just look at them now—out like lights.
Customers who came to check out couldn't help but give knowing smiles at the sight.
"Ma'am, your two kids are so well-behaved."
"Yes, they've always been very obedient," Su He couldn't help but smile.
Who doesn't love hearing their children praised by others?
"Ah, mine are nothing like that—they can't sit still, haha—"
"Kids will be kids. It's normal for them to be a bit mischievous."
By the afternoon, Su Shiming arrived and his heart ached seeing his grandchildren sleeping in such makeshift conditions behind the counter.
But there was nothing to be done—the children wanted to stay by their mother's side, no matter how uncomfortable it was.
In the evening, Fu Tinghua brought up buying a tricycle with the Fu family.
Back then, vehicles of any kind were expensive—even a tricycle ran several thousand yuan.
"I've already contacted the hauling guy in town. He'll come by at 11 tomorrow. I wanted to discuss with the family—I think we should buy a tricycle for our household."
Fu Tinghua's words dropped like a bomb on the Fu family.
"D-do we even have that much money?" Wu Yanhua couldn't help but ask nervously.
In the countryside, a tricycle is equivalent to a car. Up to now, only the Wu family in Shangyao Village has one.
There’s no choice—people can't justify the expense.
Most folks just walk everywhere. Who’d shell out for a vehicle just to get around?
Nowadays, there are two buses running to the city daily.
But many people still prefer to walk if they want to go to town, too cheap to pay the fare.
"I’ve got some put aside, Su He’s got some too, plus the dividends I brought this time and the profits from this batch of durians—combined, it should be enough to buy a tricycle."
Fu Tinghua was lowballing it. He figured the money from Su He and his own funds alone should suffice for a tricycle.
Tomorrow, he’ll file for that subsidy—a bonus awarded for being recognized as a top-tier military medic. The brass never brought it up before, so he didn’t know he had to apply for it.
Next Monday, when he goes to the hospital, he’ll put in the paperwork.
"Buy it! Of course, buy it! With a vehicle, our family can handle deliveries ourselves—won’t have to depend on anybody else." Fu Dajun said firmly.
"Right, I agree too! Having a vehicle at home will make transporting goods much easier." Fu Guoqing also agreed.
With the men in the family all in favor, the women couldn’t exactly argue.
After all, Fu Tinghua and Su He were contributing the bulk of the money—they couldn’t bite the hand that feeds them.
The durian business bringing a vehicle to the family had the Fu wives grinning at the thought.
"Alright, tomorrow when we go to town, I’ll scope out the options."
