Chapter 234: Turning the Tables, the Villain Accuses First

"That no-good Old Man Wu, and we trusted him so much," Fu Dajun fumed.
"He'll come looking for us tomorrow, and then we'll see," Fu Tinghua said noncommittally.
After finishing their meal, the family turned in for the night.
Fu Tinghua returned to the room he stayed in at the Fu family home and lay on the bed, unable to stop thinking about Su He.
He had grown accustomed to sleeping with her in his arms, and now, without her by his side, he felt all wrong.
She must already be asleep by now, right? Since he hadn’t been with her at the shop for inventory tonight, he wondered if she had worked late.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Su He was dead asleep with their two children, deeply at peace.
The next morning, the Fu family’s door was pounded.
Because of the late-night trouble the previous day, the Fu family had overslept and hadn’t yet risen.
"Fu Dajun! Come out! Fu Dajun!"
The person knocking sounded furious and urgent.
Neighbors who hadn’t yet left for work came out to gawk.
What now with the Fu family? Someone was causing trouble at their door again.
Wait—why was there a car parked at the door? Had the Fu family’s youngest son returned?
"Stop making such a racket! What’s all this noise?" Fu Derong yanked the door open, his face full of irritation.
As the strongest of the Fu brothers, he was built like a brick house.
When Old Man Wu saw him, his bluster vanished.
"Where’s your father? Call him out," Old Man Wu demanded, squaring up.
"Ha! Who do you think you are, talking like that to my father? You see me standing here?"
Fu Derong, already grumpy from being woken up, snapped at the man’s tone.
"Stop shouting! What’s going on?" Fu Dajun and Wu Yanhua, also woken by the racket, came out to see what was happening.
"Fu Dajun, how could your family do this?" Old Man Wu rounded on him.
"What has my family done?" Fu Dajun replied coldly.
"We’re all neighbors here. How could you send my son to the police station? And you even busted his leg!"
Old Man Wu was truly pulling a fast one—the villain accusing first.
"First, you know exactly why your son was sent to the police station. Second, we didn’t injure his leg—his own companion accidentally hit him. Don’t pin this on our family," Fu Dajun sneered.
The crowd of onlookers grew larger, and someone, sensing trouble, quickly went to get the village chief.
"So what if he took some of your damn things from your family—what were they called, durians (those stinky fruits)? We’ll pay for them. We’re all neighbors—why did you have to send them to the police station?" Old Man Wu dug in his heels.
In his view, such a trivial matter wasn't worth taking to the police station.
The Fu family was being way too cold about this.
"Just some durian? Do you know how expensive those things are? Your son and his friends took a few hundred bucks’ worth of stuff from our family. That’s gotta be worth calling the cops over, right?" Fu Dajun retorted.
"Hundreds? How could it be hundreds?"
At first, the neighbors figured stealing a few things could just be settled with compensation—no need to involve the police.
I mean, it’s a small village—everyone knows everyone.
But when they heard it was a few hundred bucks’ worth, they began to think it might indeed be a significant amount.
"What the heck costs that much?"
"My goodness, what is the Fu family dealing with? What could possibly be worth that much?"
"I don’t get it. The Wus aren’t exactly struggling, are they? Why would they steal from the Fus?"
"Who knows? The Fus must be moving up in the world. Can’t help it—their kid’s made something of himself," someone said, voice dripping with jealousy.
At that moment, Fu Tinghua also stepped out.
Just him showing up shut everyone up—the noisy crowd instantly fell silent.
Looking at Fu Tinghua, Old Man Wu suddenly looked small.
There was no helping it—the guy just had this crazy intimidating vibe.
This time, he seemed even scarier.
"This is a lesson. When we caught them yesterday, your son and his gang were carrying knives and nearly slashed me. If I hadn’t taken them down, who knows what they’d have done?"
Seeing Fu Tinghua's expressionless face, Old Man Wu trembled in fear.
He stammered out a plea, "I—I’ll discipline my son properly. Please, just give him a break this one time. And—and his leg is already injured, I—"
"You knew exactly why your son took your car out, yet you didn’t stop him. 'A screw-up kid means a screw-up dad'—don’t you understand that?"
With Fu Tinghua staring him down like that, Old Man Wu felt a chill run through his entire body.
His family still didn’t know about this—he hadn’t dared to tell them that his youngest son had done such a thing and been arrested.
Wu Qing was the spoiled baby of the family, running around with a bunch of no-good punks and never helping with chores.
His other boys were already fed up with it.
If they found out he’d been arrested for theft, they’d surely tear into him for coddling the kid and landing him in trouble.
"Wait, Old Man Wu was in on it?"
"Seriously, what kind of dad lets his kid steal?"
"Then isn’t he basically an accomplice?"
"If he covered for him, wouldn’t the cops nail him too?"
"Seriously though, what’s the Fu family got that’s worth that much?"
"What's the matter? You thinking of stealing too? The Fu family is clearly making an example this time. They called the cops this time, and they won’t hesitate to do it again if someone’s caught."
"Just wonderin’—who’d be dumb enough to steal with this crackdown?"
Listening to the neighbors, the Fu family got what Fu Tinghua was up to.
Whether the villagers knew about their durian biz didn’t matter—nobody was gonna mess with the Fu family.
Because anyone stealing from the Fu family would get reported and hauled off to jail—no exceptions.
"Ting Hua, you're back." The village chief, running late, finally showed his face and greeted Fu Tinghua as soon as he approached.
Spotting the chief, Old Man Wu latched onto him like a drowning man. He excitedly grabbed the chief’s hand and pleaded, "Chief, please help me! Talk to the Fu family for me, ask them to write a letter of forgiveness and release my son. I’m willing to compensate them."
The chief looked somewhat troubled as Old Man Wu tightly gripped his hand.
