    Chapter 55 Heart-to-Heart Talk

"It's Mommy's fault. I didn't protect you well enough and let you get bullied," Su He said with reddened eyes.

She would never forget the scene she witnessed when she arrived—her two children being chased by the Wang family adults, their faces twisted in fear and helplessness.

Thankfully, she’d transmigrated into this world. Otherwise, Su He couldn’t imagine what kind of life the original ‘Su He’ and the two children would have faced.

"Mommy, I was bullied, but you stood up for me. I don’t feel wronged at all," Zai Zai said, leaning against Su He’s chest to comfort her.

He felt like the happiest child in the world right now. Mommy was the best.

The image of Su He standing up for him was seared into Zai Zai’s memory.

Mommy was really amazing. He was still young and didn’t have the words to describe it, but in his heart, Su He had surpassed everyone, even his sister, becoming the most important person to him.

"Mom, Mom, you were so awesome just now! I want to be like you when I grow up," Niu Niu piped up excitedly.

Seeing that the two children weren’t traumatized by today’s events, Su He let out a relieved sigh.

"Zai Zai, Niu Niu, were you scared today?" Su He asked.

"Scared, but I knew Mom would come save us," Niu Niu said proudly.

Zai Zai side-eyed his boastful sister.

Niu Niu had been the one crying the hardest earlier. Though she later tried to hold back her sobs, tears still streamed down her face in big drops.

"I always believed Mom would come help me," Zai Zai replied as well.

"Yes, that’s right. As long as I’m here with you, I’ll always be there for you. So don’t be scared when trouble comes—Mom will always be your strongest support," Su He told them.

"Okay!" the two children answered in unison.

After all that drama, they still hadn’t made dinner.

When Su He had left earlier, she had put out the fire, so now she had to start it again.

This era was troublesome in this regard—no gas, no induction stoves, just firewood—so time-consuming.

Su He couldn’t be bothered to cook anything fancy, so she simply took out instant noodles, prepared her own broth, added some side dishes, and the family of three ate noodles together.

The children were still too young, so Su He didn’t want them eating too much junk food like instant noodles.

Even though she didn’t use the seasoning packets, the broth she made herself was so tasty.

"Mom, the noodles are so yummy," the two children said through mouthfuls.

"Eat as much as you want. There’s more in the pot," Su He replied, sipping her own soup.

Today’s incident didn’t affect the children at all. In fact, it gave their previously timid and insecure hearts new confidence.

The old Su He had been harsh with them, making the siblings a bit timid.

But now, Su He had their backs completely. Knowing their mom would always stand behind them, the siblings became way more confident.

After their heart-to-heart talk, the three dug in happily, then Su He got started on tomorrow’s batch of fried dough cakes.

The two children sat obediently on the low stools in the kitchen, watching Su He cook unblinking.

These days, they clung even tighter to their mother, unwilling to leave her side for a moment.

Su He broke a potato fritter in half and handed it to the children, saying, "Try this. How does it taste?"

The children took the pieces obediently, chewed them, and both declared it delicious.

"How does it compare to the sweet potato patties?" Su He asked.

"Mom, the sweet potato ones are better," Zai Zai answered.

"I think both are good," Niu Niu, the little gourmand, chimed in.

"Got it, kids," Su He said with a smile. "Next time I have time, I’ll make you some french fries."

"Mom, what are french fries?" Niu Niu asked curiously.

"You’ll see when I make them next time."

Fries were more of a snack and not filling, so Su He didn’t plan to sell them. Most folks these days were still poor. Ordinary people spending money on food mostly wanted something that could fill their stomachs.

While the Su household was buzzing with happiness, Wu Yanhua lay wide awake after finishing her work.

"What's got you so restless?" Fu Dajun, lying beside her, couldn’t help but ask.

"Dajun, don’t you think Su He seems like a completely different person now? Today, she single-handedly handled the whole Wang family—those strong men. The more I think about it, the more unbelievable it seems," Wu Yanhua sat up and said to her husband.

"Did you know her well before?" Fu Dajun posed a pointed question.

    Wu Yanhua: "..."

"Talking to you is so boring," Wu Yanhua said angrily, flopping back down facing away from Fu Dajun.

Seeing his wife getting upset again after just a few words, Fu Dajun sighed helplessly, then hugged her from behind and reasoned, "No matter how Su He has changed, the changes in her are good. Why overthink it?"

"Now that she’s taking care of the kids, not just us, even Ting Hua can focus on work without worrying. After all, she has the ability to protect the children," Fu Dajun said with a sigh.

"I know, I’m not saying her change is bad. It’s just... I feel a bit uneasy," Wu Yanhua confessed sheepishly.

"What are you uneasy about?" Fu Dajun was puzzled.

"It’s just that Su He seems really good at fighting. What if we butt heads as in-laws in the future? Would she actually hit me?" The more Wu Yanhua thought about it, the more anxious she became.

    A daughter-in-law who's that tough isn't necessarily a good thing.

What if Su He does something wrong in the future? Should she, as the mother-in-law, call her out or let it slide?

What if Su He just takes a swing at me if we disagree?

Hearing her worries, Fu Dajun had to chuckle.

"Did she ever hit you before, even when you treated her poorly? What nonsense are you thinking? Besides, I’ve realized one thing—Su He truly cares about the kids. Her bottom line is them. As long as you don’t target the kids, you’ll be fine."

Wu Yanhua wasn’t happy hearing that.

"Those kids are my own grandchildren, and they’re my youngest son’s beloved children. Why would I target them? I admit I used to take things out on them, but haven’t I been plenty nice lately?" Wu Yanhua said, her voice tinged with hurt.

She was already changing and hated getting another lecture from her husband.

"You're just so stubborn—I was just giving an example. Since you love the kids and Su He loves them too, your goals are the same. Why worry about her hitting you? She won’t lay a hand on you, rest assured."

Fu Dajun never expected his wife’s way of thinking to be so unusual. He wanted to laugh but was afraid Wu Yanhua would scold him, so he simply tried to reassure her.

Wu Yanhua thought it over and agreed, but still said, "We’ll have to be on good terms with Su He from now on."

"As long as you can see it that way, that’s fine. Now go to sleep."
