    Chapter 489 Someone Came Looking

"Alright, let my dad sleep in the guest room later. He's totally wasted," Su He said with a laugh.

"Yes, your dad hasn't been this happy drinking in a long time," Wen Qing remarked, looking fondly at Su Shiming, who was lying with his head on her lap.

Su He and Fu Tinghua quickly fetched some boards to section off the room for Su Shiming.

The bed frame had been brought up earlier by Fu Dajun at Fu Tinghua's request, and it was ready to use now.

Wen Qing and Aunt Lan worked together to put fresh sheets on all the beds.

Afterward, they tidied up together, and by the time they finished, it was almost four o'clock—time to start preparing dinner.

For dinner, Su He didn’t plan to eat with the Fu family.

Since they had already moved out, and going back and forth would be a hassle, she had mentioned at lunch that they shouldn’t make food for them in the evening.

As she looked at the view outside the door, Wen Qing suddenly understood why Su He had invited them to come back and spend the holiday together.

The air in the countryside was truly fresh. Even though pollution wasn't really a problem yet, the difference between the city and the countryside was still quite noticeable.

After her nap, Niu Niu woke up and immediately popped out of bed to check if her parents had hung up the lanterns for her.

The house had clearly been cleaned—it was spotless—but unfortunately, the lanterns hadn’t been put up yet.

Seeing Niu Niu run out without her coat, Aunt Lan let out a worried gasp and quickly scooped her up.

"Niu Niu, why did you come out without your coat?" Aunt Lan asked helplessly, bundling the little girl up tightly.

Niu Niu looked a bit guilty and replied, "Sorry, Grandma, I forgot."

"Silly child, no need to say sorry to Grandma. I’m just worried you’ll catch a chill. Come on, Grandma will take you back to get dressed."

As she spoke, Aunt Lan carried Niu Niu back to the room.

Zai Zai was also awake by then and getting dressed.

Seeing Niu Niu rush out without her clothes, he blurted out, "Silly girl."

"Brother is the worst," Niu Niu shot back with a huff.

Watching the siblings bicker, Aunt Lan couldn’t help smiling.

"Alright now, Grandma will help you get dressed," she said, helping Niu Niu into her coat.

As she felt the fabric, Aunt Lan wondered about its quality, but she dismissed the thought.

"Grandma, wearing thick clothes is uncomfortable," Niu Niu pouted.

"Then are you cold?" Aunt Lan asked, amused.

    "Cold."

    Aunt Lan: ......

This little girl was already quite a character at such a young age.

By dinner time, the sky had already started getting dark.

As the cold days set in, the sky gets dark earlier and earlier.

It’s only half past six, and already it’s dark outside.

“Dinner’s ready~” Niu Niu called out to the grown-ups. It was her first time back in the countryside with so many people around, and she was so excited.

She adored her parents and grandparents.

Although she hadn’t spent much time with her new grandmother yet, she really liked her a lot.

Her new grandmother was gentle and very beautiful, just as good-looking as her dad.

The whole family gathered around the fire pit, throwing all the dishes together into one pot to cook. Even with just some dipping sauce, it already tasted delicious.

The greens were from Wu Yanhua's garden.

She had chosen a plot of her own land near Su He’s place and planted some vegetables, just so Su He and her family could pick them to eat when they returned for the New Year.

And now, they were coming in handy right away.

“These greens are so sweet—so different from the ones grown in the city,” Wen Qing couldn’t help but remark as she ate.

“Yes, I wanted to say the same thing this morning,” Su Shiming said. By now, he had sobered up some and wasn’t about to sleep now, afraid he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep later. His head was still fuzzy, and Wen Qing had made him some sober-up soup.

“Mom, Dad, if it tastes good, have more. In the countryside, you never have to worry about having enough vegetables,” Su He said with a smile.

In rural homes, everyone grows some veggies to eat.

While the family was happily eating dinner, someone suddenly called out from outside the door: “Ting Hua, Ting Hua, is anyone home?”

Everyone was in the middle of their meal when they heard the voice from outside. They exchanged glances, and Fu Tinghua set down his bowl and chopsticks, saying, “I’ll go check it out.”

    “Go on,” Su He replied.

Fu Tinghua walked out of the room with the fire pit and saw the village chief. He hurried forward and asked, “Uncle, what’s the matter?”

Seeing Fu Tinghua, the village chief quickly said, “Someone is here to see you.”

“See me?” Fu Tinghua was confused. With the New Year approaching, who could possibly be looking for him?

“Yes, you,” the village chief replied, looking at Fu Tinghua like he wanted to say more but hesitated.

“Who is it? Where are they?” Fu Tinghua asked with a frown.

Unexpectedly, a clear, middle-aged voice responded, “It’s me.”

Fu Tinghua turned around and saw a figure hidden in the darkness; he couldn't make out his face.

But intuitively, he had already guessed who this person was.
